In 3D ICs, block-level designs provide various advantages over designs done at other granularity such as gate-level because they promote the reuse of IP blocks. In this paper, we study block-level 3D-IC designs, where the footprint of the dies in the stack are different. This happens in case of die-to-wafer bonding, which is more popular choice for near-term low-cost 3D designs. We study design quality tradeoffs among three different ways to place through-silicon vias (TSVs): TSV-farm, TSV-distributed, and TSV-whitespace. In our holistic approach, we use wirelength, power, performance, temperature, and mechanical stress metrics to conduct comprehensive comparative studies on the three design styles. In addition, we provide analysis on the impact of TSV size and pitch on the design quality of these three styles.

This paper is concerned with the design of a dynamic multivariable PID control for multi input multi output (MIMO) process. Four multivariable PID control schemes using Davison, Penttinen-Koivo, Maciejowski and a combined method were applied. The controller parameters for all control strategies were designed based on dynamic condition using singularly perturbed system. The purpose of the study is to investigate the effectiveness in the performance of dynamic control based on different multivariable PID control strategies. To attain the best result, numerous tuning parameters were tested. The simulation results show the significance of the study whereby the proposed dynamic MPID control scheme shows better improvement in control tuning of nonlinear system.

The flexibility of Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) SRAM based FPGAs is an attractive option for the design of artificial satellites, however, the functional verification of HDL-based designs is required and is of fundamental importance. Formal verification using model checking represents a system as formal model that are automatically generated by synthesis tools. On the other hand, the properties are represented by temporal logic expressions and are traditionally manually elaborated, which is susceptible to human errors increasing the costs and time of the verification. This work presents a new method for automatic property generation for formal verification of Hardware Description Language (HDL) based systems. The industrial case study is a communication subsystem of an artificial satellite, which was developed in cooperation with the Brazilian Institute of Space Research (INPE).

This paper deals with the implementation of a Nonlinear Interference Suppressor (NIS) into a wireless LTE transceiver. This within the context of high energy efficient multi-standard transceivers controlled by a cognitive radio platform. In multimode transceivers, the transmitter for one communication standard may induce a large interferer in the receiver for another standard. To linearly suppress this interferer, which can be several orders of magnitude larger than the desired received signal, the receiver should have a very large linear dynamic range, resulting in excessive power consumption. For this reason, we consider the NIS, a closed-loop tuning method that exploits the locally available interference as side information. The wireless LTE transceiver model, includes all the baseband signal treatment blocks and the RF front-end of a low IF direct conversion receiver architecture. A mobile WiMAX signal is considered as the interference signal at the receiver. The obtained symbol error rate (SER) is observed for different system configurations. Matlab simulation results in this practical scenario show that the NIS can strongly suppress the interferer while a symbol error rate performance close to that of an exactly linear receiver is achieved. This results permit to identify perspective directions for the better multi-standard and high energy efficient transceivers implementation. © 2013 IEEE.

We describe a computational model for studying the complexity of self-assembled structures with active molecular components. Our model captures notions of growth and movement ubiquitous in biological systems. The model is inspired by biology's fantastic ability to assemble biomolecules that form systems with complicated structure and dynamics, from molecular motors that walk on rigid tracks and proteins that dynamically alter the structure of the cell during mitosis, to embryonic development where large scale complicated organisms efficiently grow from a single cell. Using this active self-assembly model, we show how to efficiently self-assemble shapes and patterns from simple monomers. For example we show how to grow a line of monomers in time and number of monomer states that is merely logarithmic in its length. Our main results show how to grow arbitrary connected two-dimensional geometric shapes and patterns in expected time polylogarithmic in the size of the shape plus roughly the time required to run a Turing machine deciding whether or not a given pixel is in the shape. We do this while keeping the number of monomer types logarithmic in shape size, plus monomers required by the Kolmogorov complexity of the shape or pattern. This work thus highlights the fundamental efficiency advantage of active self-assembly over passive self-assembly and motivates experimental effort to construct self-assembly systems with active molecular components. © 2013 Authors.

In this paper, we present a novel method (Contrast Source Inversion - Electric Properties Tomography or CSI-EPT) to dielectric imaging of biological tissue using so-called B 1 + data measurable by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) systems. Integral representations for the electromagnetic field quantities are taken as a starting point and we follow an iterative contrast source inversion approach to retrieve the dielectric tissue parameters from measured field data. Numerical results illustrate the performance of the method and show that reliable results are produced near tissue boundaries as opposed to the currently used methods. Fine structures can be resolved as well and since CSI-EPT reconstructs the electric field strength inside a scanning region of interest, it is also a promising candidate to determine the patient-specific SAR deposition during an MRI scan.

Purpose: The U.S. Bureau of Labor1 2008 report stated that the number of workers aged 65 or older is expected to rise by 36.6% from 2006 to 2016. This rise is expected to accompany a 6.9% decrease in the number of workers between ages 16 to 24 and a slight increase by 2.4% for workers ages 25 to 54. This indicates that the industry will face an aging workforce problem that can affect capacity and productivity if workers' health is not properly monitored. An essential problem for the aging workforce is musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), specifically work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). In 2008, shoulder WMSDs constituted 6.9% of all WMSDs in construction, and this percentage was substantially higher for crafts such as electricians, carpenters, and painters. The main risk factor for shoulder WMSDs is prolonged forceful overhead work. This paper is presents a method to monitor shoulder WMSDs risk factor development and to act as an alarm to prevent the disorder from happening. Method: An exoskeleton is being developed that will be worn by a worker to wirelessly track upper-arm motion in 3 dimensions using an array of anisotropic magneto-resistive (AMR) sensors, deployed over workers' upper-arms. The sensory system will be controlled using a microcontroller with the ability to save data on an SD card for post-processing. Results & Discussion: Alwasel et al. measured the angle of the upper-arm to trunk using AMR-sensors in an unpublished thesis. The problem with the use of AMR was the assembly itself since the sensor was not held at the center of joint rotation. However the device presented here will place AMR-sensors at the center of joint rotation by extending the joint axis of rotation outside the body. This will provide enough data to help assess whether a worker is at risk of developing shoulder injury. This technique will help reduce the number workers that leave the workforce because of injury, and help maintain a good working environment. This technique

As the successor to the 3G standard, 4G provides much higher data rates to address cellular users' ever-increasing demands for high-speed multimedia communications. This paper analyzes the cellular operators' timing of network upgrades and models that users can switch operators and services. Being the first to upgrade 3G to 4G service, an operator increases his market share but takes more risk or upgrade cost because 4G technology matures over time. This paper first studies a 4G monopoly market with one dominant operator and some small operators, where the monopolist decides his upgrade time by trading off increased market share and upgrade cost. The paper also considers a 4G competition market and develops a game theoretic model for studying operators' interactions. The analysis shows that operators select different upgrade times to avoid severe competition. One operator takes the lead to upgrade, using the benefit of a larger market share to compensate for the larger cost of an early upgrade. This result matches well with many industry observations of asymmetric 4G upgrades. The paper further shows that the availability of 4G upgrade may decrease both operators' profits due to increased competition. Perhaps surprisingly, the profits can increase with the upgrade cost.
