In this paper, we present a novel method (Contrast Source Inversion - Electric Properties Tomography or CSI-EPT) to dielectric imaging of biological tissue using so-called B 1 + data measurable by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) systems. Integral representations for the electromagnetic field quantities are taken as a starting point and we follow an iterative contrast source inversion approach to retrieve the dielectric tissue parameters from measured field data. Numerical results illustrate the performance of the method and show that reliable results are produced near tissue boundaries as opposed to the currently used methods. Fine structures can be resolved as well and since CSI-EPT reconstructs the electric field strength inside a scanning region of interest, it is also a promising candidate to determine the patient-specific SAR deposition during an MRI scan.

Purpose: The U.S. Bureau of Labor1 2008 report stated that the number of workers aged 65 or older is expected to rise by 36.6% from 2006 to 2016. This rise is expected to accompany a 6.9% decrease in the number of workers between ages 16 to 24 and a slight increase by 2.4% for workers ages 25 to 54. This indicates that the industry will face an aging workforce problem that can affect capacity and productivity if workers' health is not properly monitored. An essential problem for the aging workforce is musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), specifically work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). In 2008, shoulder WMSDs constituted 6.9% of all WMSDs in construction, and this percentage was substantially higher for crafts such as electricians, carpenters, and painters. The main risk factor for shoulder WMSDs is prolonged forceful overhead work. This paper is presents a method to monitor shoulder WMSDs risk factor development and to act as an alarm to prevent the disorder from happening. Method: An exoskeleton is being developed that will be worn by a worker to wirelessly track upper-arm motion in 3 dimensions using an array of anisotropic magneto-resistive (AMR) sensors, deployed over workers' upper-arms. The sensory system will be controlled using a microcontroller with the ability to save data on an SD card for post-processing. Results & Discussion: Alwasel et al. measured the angle of the upper-arm to trunk using AMR-sensors in an unpublished thesis. The problem with the use of AMR was the assembly itself since the sensor was not held at the center of joint rotation. However the device presented here will place AMR-sensors at the center of joint rotation by extending the joint axis of rotation outside the body. This will provide enough data to help assess whether a worker is at risk of developing shoulder injury. This technique will help reduce the number workers that leave the workforce because of injury, and help maintain a good working environment. This technique

As the successor to the 3G standard, 4G provides much higher data rates to address cellular users' ever-increasing demands for high-speed multimedia communications. This paper analyzes the cellular operators' timing of network upgrades and models that users can switch operators and services. Being the first to upgrade 3G to 4G service, an operator increases his market share but takes more risk or upgrade cost because 4G technology matures over time. This paper first studies a 4G monopoly market with one dominant operator and some small operators, where the monopolist decides his upgrade time by trading off increased market share and upgrade cost. The paper also considers a 4G competition market and develops a game theoretic model for studying operators' interactions. The analysis shows that operators select different upgrade times to avoid severe competition. One operator takes the lead to upgrade, using the benefit of a larger market share to compensate for the larger cost of an early upgrade. This result matches well with many industry observations of asymmetric 4G upgrades. The paper further shows that the availability of 4G upgrade may decrease both operators' profits due to increased competition. Perhaps surprisingly, the profits can increase with the upgrade cost.

This paper reports on a new hybrid TD-AIM-MOD scheme for analyzing transient scattering from the perfect electrically conducting structures. The scheme reduces the computational complexity of a classically formulated MOD solver from N o 2 N s 2 to N o log 2 N o N s 1.5 log 2 N s - here N o is the maximum order of the Laguerre polynomials used to expand the temporal current signature. Just as in MOT-TD-AIM solvers, the scatterer is embedded in a 3D regular grid and sources are projected onto this grid via moment matching. Next, fields are propagated on this grid by using a 3D spatial FFT and a blocked 1D “temporal” (order) FFT. Finally, fields at observers are obtained by interpolating their values from the regular spatial grid, followed by a near field correction operation. The accuracy and stability characteristics of the TD-AIM-MOD method are demonstrated via its application to large-scale scattering problems.

Most of the links in future wireless communication networks will be established over relatively short distances. This new direction in wireless communication is adopted and being developed by embedded multimedia applications leaders. Moreover, these short range communications are introduced into critical applications, where the dependability/reliability is mandatory. Thus, dependability concerns around reliability evaluation becomes an essential question to answer, and poses several challenges. Obviously, it's particularly difficult to investigate the reliability of such mixed HW/SW IPs based systems. Therefore, dependability has to be investigated at different abstractions levels, and for all components integrated into the system being designed. In this paper, we discuss the investigation of dependability in wireless short range systems. Firstly we show how a HW platform based dependability investigation can be a very interactive approach;secondly, we describe a real experience in building a wireless hardware platform for short range systems dependability analysis, and finally, based on this wireless network platform, we propose a dependability flow that takes care of the heterogeneous parts of the wireless embedded systems. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, the problem of reducing noise from low-dose Computed Tomography (CT) is investigated. The process is composed of: sparse coding, dictionary update and denoising;that is a time consuming process. Hence, despite the promising results reported in literature, it has not attracted much attention in medical applications. In an attempt to reduce the complexity and time consumed, we propose an efficient method for sparse coding approximation. In the proposed sparse coding approach, unlike most current methods the global search is performed only once. The potential representative atoms are identified and buffered, then only a local recursive pursuit within a few atoms is executed to find the sparse representation. Moreover, the K-SVD dictionary update method and its extension to image denoising is utilized for reducing the noise in CT scans. Our results demonstrate this approach is reliable and improves the accuracy and process time significantly, making the proposed method a suitable candidate for clinical purposes. © 2012 IEEE.

Segmenting lateral ventricle in medical images plays an important role in medical diagnosis. The volume of lateral ventricle increases with age and it is an important indicator of Alzheimer's, schizophrenia, and depressive disorders. In this article a new approach based on sparse representation and dictionary learning as a pre process of the existing active contour models for segmentation is introduced to automatically segment this area. In recent years utilizing methods for sparsely representing a signal over a given dictionary has gained considerable attention by scholars. Applications of signal sparse representation varies from compression to denoising, classification and many more. This article expands this growing area of research into a new level, by introducing a new approach for segmenting MRI images utilizing sparse representation solutions. The method takes advantage of K-SVD dictionary learning algorithm to create two distinct over complete dictionaries for each class and it uses sparse representation classification (SRC) algorithm to sparsely represent the image as well as discriminating the two different classes in the image. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper is concerned with the H2 and the mixed H 2/H∞ control problems with static state feedback. The purpose of this paper is to propose iterative methods for these problems. In this paper, firstly, we derive one feasible direction for the H2 norm constraint. Secondly an iterative method for the H2 control problem using the feasible direction is proposed. Next, we extend this method to that for the mixed H2/H∞ control problem. Finally, the efficiency of the proposed methods is shown by a numerical example. © 2012 Intl Jrnal Advanced Mech.

Electronic beam lithography (EBL) is one of the promising emerging technologies in the sub-22 nm regime. In EBL, the desired circuit patterns are directly shot into the wafer, which overcomes the diffraction limit of light in the current optical lithography system. However, the low throughput becomes its key technical hurdle. In the conventional EBL system, each rectangle in the layout will be projected by one electronic shot through a variable shape beam (VSB). This could be extremely slow. As an improved EBL technology, character projection (CP) shoots complex shapes, so-called characters, in one time, by putting them into a predesigned stencil. However, only a limited number of characters can be employed, due to the area constraint. Those patterns, not contained by any character, are still required to be written by VSB. A key problem is how to select an optimal set of characters and pack them on the CP stencil to minimize total processing time. In this paper, we investigate a problem of electronic beam lithography stencil design with overlapped characters. Different from previous works, besides selecting appropriate characters, their placements on the stencil are also optimized in our framework. Specifically, we propose a Hamilton-path-based iterative algorithm to handle 1-D stencil design problem, and an effective simulated annealing framework for the generalized 2-D case with an efficient look-ahead sequence pair evaluation technique. The experimental results show that, compared to conventional stencil design methodology without overlapped characters, we are able to reduce total projection time by 51%. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper presents an approach for the transient simulation of I/O buffers described by IBIS models. Using the latency insertion method a formulation can be obtained for the transient behavior of IBIS models and external circuitry. The formulation offers better convergence than traditional Newton-Raphson methods and is therefore more robust. Several computer simulations are performed to validate the method. © 2012 IEEE.
