This paper deals with the implementation of a Nonlinear Interference Suppressor (NIS) into a wireless LTE transceiver. This within the context of high energy efficient multi-standard transceivers controlled by a cognitive radio platform. In multimode transceivers, the transmitter for one communication standard may induce a large interferer in the receiver for another standard. To linearly suppress this interferer, which can be several orders of magnitude larger than the desired received signal, the receiver should have a very large linear dynamic range, resulting in excessive power consumption. For this reason, we consider the NIS, a closed-loop tuning method that exploits the locally available interference as side information. The wireless LTE transceiver model, includes all the baseband signal treatment blocks and the RF front-end of a low IF direct conversion receiver architecture. A mobile WiMAX signal is considered as the interference signal at the receiver. The obtained symbol error rate (SER) is observed for different system configurations. Matlab simulation results in this practical scenario show that the NIS can strongly suppress the interferer while a symbol error rate performance close to that of an exactly linear receiver is achieved. This results permit to identify perspective directions for the better multi-standard and high energy efficient transceivers implementation.

A majority of driver assistance systems focuses on assisting the driver when the car is in motion. There is relatively less, to almost no work on assistance systems when the car is stationary. The focus of this paper is on such a system and describes the design and realization of a novel, camera-based anti-trap protection system for smart car doors. Our system uses a single omnidirectional camera that is integrated in each inner door of a vehicle, and detects obstacles such as fingers, hands or legs at the A and B-pillar, door sill and car door without any contact. This is an enhancement to currently available systems that require an active contact between obstacles and sensors in the door area for the detection of trapping. The paper also proposes a scheme for re-calibrating the camera position that may change due to vibrations during the life-time of the car door. Experiments on a fully realized car door prototype show that the proposed schemes prevent trapping by robustly detecting obstacles such as small fingers or hands in critical door regions, and output results in real-time. The latter is important when door users slam the car door. A first study with 20 test users showed that our system strongly supports the door users to prevent trapping.

This paper presents the design and analysis of a Mixer in 0.13-μm RFCMOS process for Direct-Conversion Receivers (DCRs), with RF input frequency ranging from 50 MHz up to 6.5 GHz. This circuit has been designed to provide an intermediate input impedance, being suitable for either direct antenna connection or integrated with a LNA. This mixer attends the necessary requirements of a cognitive radio (CR), including wideband operation along with good linearity. It is based on a Gilbert-cell using the current bleeding technique with two series resonating inductors. It has a measured conversion gain of 16 dB, a measured input third-order intercept point of -1 dBm, a simulated noise figure of 8.5 dB at 1 MHz, while consuming only 4.5 mW of dc power. © 2012 IEEE.

Cloud Mobile Gaming (CMG) [1][10][11] has been proposed as an approach to enable rich Internet games on mobile devices, where the rendering of the games is performed on cloud servers, as opposed to on mobile devices. Though promising, the CMG approach may require significant cloud computing resources for the concurrent gaming sessions, and even more critically, significant bandwidth for delivering the rendered videos back to mobile devices, leading to high cloud costs, and questions regarding resource constrained wireless networks. This paper addresses the problem of making the CMG approach scalable and economically feasible by proposing a novel Wireless Cloud Scheduler (WCS), which can increase the number of simultaneous CMG sessions that can be supported while ensuring Mobile Gaming User Experience (MGUE)[1] with the available wireless network resources, while minimizing the cloud service cost incurred by the CMG provider. Unlike conventional network schedulers, WCS considers simultaneously the constraints of the wireless networks that may be available to each CMG user, including cellular and WiFi, as well as the cost of available cloud resources, while scheduling the most optimal wireless link and cloud server for each CMG session. To further enhance the performance of WCS, we also propose a joint scheduling-adaptation algorithm, that can systematically leverage adaptation techniques introduced in [10][11] to adapt the communication needs of in-service users if the available wireless network bandwidth is not sufficient for a new CMG user. Our simulation results demonstrate that the use of WCS, and the joint scheduling-adaptation algorithm, can significantly improve the performance of the CMG approach, increasing the number of simultaneous CMG sessions that can be supported, while maximizing aggregate MGUE and minimizing the average cloud service cost.

Current digital I&C and Main Control Room technology has extended the capability of integrating information from numerous plant systems and transmitting needed information to operations personnel in a timely manner that could not be envisioned when previous generation plants were designed and built. At present, numerous versions and different types of the new advanced control rooms are in the regulatory licensing application process. To assist with understanding the requirements and implications of these new technologies on display and control designs, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) along with nuclear industry has been proactive in conducting research to provide informed guidance on human performance issues related to safe operations, potential mitigation for failures of subsets of the automation, and how to take advantage of the digital technology while adhering to rigorous safety requirements. In order to support these human machine interface challenges in all digital control rooms, the University of Virginia and the Center for Advanced engineering Research (CAER) in Bedford, VA has designed, developed and realized a research facility to include a configurable main control room, approximately 2,500 square feet, specifically to support human factors, digital I&C, and cyber security research for nuclear power generation. This paper describes the newly created reconfigurable main control room at the CAER facility, the capabilities of the facility, and the types of research that can be supported at the facility.

The 2013 Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) Pioneers Workshop, which will be held in conjunction with the 8 th ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction, is the premiere venue for student research in the field. This highly selective workshop seeks to foster creativity, communication, and collaboration between the world's top student researchers in the field of human-robot interaction. Pioneers Workshop participants will have the opportunity to learn about the current state of HRI, to present their research, and to network with one another and with select senior researchers in a setting that is less formal and more interactive then the main conference. The theme for this year is Re-envisioning HRI: Dealing With the Elephants in Our Room. The workshop aims to bring forward difficult to discuss issues to help the field achieve more balanced perspectives and a clearer picture of what sort of future we are building.

In this paper we consider the ISS (input-to-state stability) and iISS (integral input-to-state stability) feedback control redesign for interconnected systems described by retarded nonlinear equations with discontinuous right-hand side. We show that it is possible to design a decentralized controller by which the overall closed-loop system is iISS (ISS) with respect to additive disturbances acting on each subsystem whenever the disturbance-free closed-loop system satisfies a small-gain condition. © 2012 IFAC.

The power consumption of datacenters has increased dramatically in recent years. Cloud computing accelerates this increase. The reduction of power consumption has become a challenge for cloud providers in large scale datacenters. They consolidate servers by virtualization technology as an effective remedy for huge power consumption. The management of consolidation often has been performed centrally in datacenters. We devised a distributed self-organized mechanism based on Game Theory for this purpose. In the worst case, our results are only twice as great as the theoretical minimum power consumption. In addition our mechanism could enhance the current centralized ones in two ways. Firstly, it can make decisions with less delay in response to dynamic behavior of usage patterns in cloud computing. Secondly, it can better scale up in pace with the future datacenters.

Most of the links in future wireless communication networks will be established over relatively short distances. This new direction in wireless communication is adopted and being developed by embedded multimedia applications leaders. Moreover, these short range communications are introduced into critical applications, where the dependability/reliability is mandatory. Thus, dependability concerns around reliability evaluation becomes an essential question to answer, and poses several challenges. Obviously, it's particularly difficult to investigate the reliability of such mixed HW/SW IPs based systems. Therefore, dependability has to be investigated at different abstractions levels, and for all components integrated into the system being designed. In this paper, we discuss the investigation of dependability in wireless short range systems. Firstly we show how a HW platform based dependability investigation can be a very interactive approach; secondly, we describe a real experience in building a wireless hardware platform for short range systems dependability analysis, and finally, based on this wireless network platform, we propose a dependability flow that takes care of the heterogeneous parts of the wireless embedded systems.

We present a framework that allows us to construct and formally analyze the behavior of synthetic gene circuits from specifications in a high level language used in describing electronic circuits. Our back-end synthesis tool automatically generates genetic-regulatory network (GRN) topology realizing the specifications with assigned biological “parts” from a database. We describe experimental procedures to acquire characterization data for the assigned parts and construct mathematical models capturing all possible behaviors of the generated GRN. We delineate algorithms to create finite abstractions of these models, and novel analysis techniques inspired from model-checking to verify behavioral specifications using Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) formulae.
