This paper concerns a problem of on-line model parameter estimations for multiple time-delay systems. In order to estimate unknown model parameters from measured state variables, we propose two schemes using the Lyapunov's direct method, called parallel and series-parallel model estimators, respectively. It is shown through a numerical example that the proposed parallel and series-parallel model estimators can be effective in estimating when sufficiently rich inputs are applied.

This paper is concerned with a D-stability controller design problem with a static or a reduced-order output feedback controller. This problem is difficult to be solved theoretically, because it consists of some bilinear matrix inequality's (BMI's). In this paper, an exterior-point approach to this problem, which produces a controller sequence approaching a feasible region from an infeasible one is proposed. The feature of our approach is to be able to use a non-stabilizing controller as an initial point of the sequence. A numerical example shows the efficiency of our approach.

Oil sands operations are playing an increasingly important role in North American oil supplies. Extracting and processing bitumen from oil sands is an energy intensive process that requires both electricity and steam which are usually sourced through fossil fuel conversions. This energy intensity (and associated CO2 emissions) as well as the rapid expansion of extraction operations has led to concerns about the management of this resource. We investigate the competitiveness of two options to supply electricity and steam for oil sands operations in terms of cost and CO2 emissions. This paper presents preliminary results and highlights further areas of investigation.

This paper presents a method using only the rank of the measurements to separate a part's elevated response to parametric tests from its non-elevated response. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified on the 130nm ASIC. Good die responses are correlated for same parametric tests at different conditions such as temperature, voltage and or other stress. Nonparametric correlation methods are used to calculate the intra-die correlation. When intra-die correlation is found to be low the elevated vectors that lower correlation are extracted and input to IDDQ-based diagnostic tools. Monte-Carlo simulations are described to obtain confidence bounds of the correlation for good die test response.

This paper presents further results on the problem of establishing stability of retarded nonlinear interconnected systems comprising integral input-to-state stable subsystems. It is shown that the stability of the interconnected systems with respect to external signals can be verified by constructing Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals explicitly whenever small-gain type conditions are satisfied. The primary result [12] is generalized in two aspects. One is to introduce a new flexibility in constructing Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals to deal with distributed delays more effectively. The other is to cover systems involving time-varying delays in interconnecting channels.

Today, wireless networks are becoming increasingly ubiquitous. Usually several complex multi-threaded applications are mapped on a single embedded system and each of them is triggered by a different input stream (in accordance with the run-time behaviours of the user and the environment). This dynamicity renders the task of fully analyzing at design-time these systems very complex, if not impossible. Therefore, run-time information has to be used in order to produce an efficient design. This introduces new challenges, especially for embedded system designers using a Direct Memory Access (DMA) module, who have to know in advance the memory transfer behaviour of the whole system, in order to design and program their DMA efficiently. This is especially important in embedded systems with DRAM memories as the concurrent accesses from different processing elements can adversely affect the page-based architecture of these memory elements. Even more, the increasingly common usage of dynamic data types further complicates the problem because the exact location of data instances in the memory is unknown at design-time. In this paper we propose a system-level optimization methodology to adapt the DMA usage parameters automatically at run-time, according to online information. With our proposed optimization approach we manage to reduce the mean latency of the memory transfers by more than 18%, thus reducing the average number of cycles that processing elements or DMAs have to waste waiting for data from the main memory, while optimizing energy consumption and system responsiveness. We evaluate our approach using a set of real-life applications and real wireless dynamic streams.

With the increasing application of distributed energy resources and information technologies in the electricity infrastructure, innovative possibilities for incorporating the demand side more actively in power system operation are enabled. At the residential level energy costs could be reduced with intelligent price-based control concepts (demand response). A promising, controllable, residential distributed generation technology is micro cogeneration (micro-CHP). Micro-CHP is an energy efficient technology that simultaneously provides heat and electricity to households during operation. This paper presents a detailed model of a household using a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) micro-CHP system in conjunction with heat storage options to fulfil its heat and part of its electricity demand. Furthermore, a decentralised controller based on a model predictive control (MPC) strategy is proposed. MPC can take benefit of future knowledge on prizes and energy demands and can therefore lead to better system performance. In simulations the performance of the MPC-controlled PEMFC system is illustrated under different conditions regarding energy pricing, domestic energy demand, and system configuration.

A systematic fuzzy approach is developed to model fuzziness and uncertainties in the preferences of decision makers involved in a conflict. This unique fuzzy preference formulation is used within the paradigm of the Graph Model for Conflict Resolution in which a given dispute is modeled in terms of decision makers, each decision maker＇s courses of actions or options, and each decision maker＇s preferences concerning the states or outcomes which could take place. In order to be able to determine the stability of each state for each decision maker and the possible equilibria or resolutions, a range of solution concepts describing potential human behavior under conflict are defined for use with fuzzy preferences. More specifically, strong and weak definitions of stability are provided for the solution concepts called Nash, general metarational, symmetric metarational, and sequential stability. To illustrate how these solution concepts can be conveniently used in practice, they are applied to a dispute over the contamination of an aquifer by a chemical company located in Elmira, Ontario, Canada.

A robust method for symbol recognition is presented that utilizes a compact signature based on a modified Hough Transform (HT) and knowledge-based hierarchical neural network structure. Relative position and orientation information is extracted from a symbol image using a modified Hough Transform (HT). This information is transformed and compressed into a compact, 1-D signature vector that is invariant to geometric transformations such as translation, rotation, scaling, and reflection. The proposed method uses a knowledge-based hierarchical neural network structure to reduce the complexity of the recognition process by effectively segmenting the search space into smaller and more manageable clusters based on a priori knowledge. The method achieved overall recognition rates of 96.7% on line graphic symbols from the GREC'05 symbol database under various models of image degradation and distortion.

This paper presents an efficient and robust method for performing non-rigid image registration and relative gamma estimation in a simultaneous manner. The proposed method identifies regions of interest within the target image and determines the optimal correspondence and relative gamma between each region of interest and the reference image. The problem of finding the optimal correspondence and relative gamma between each region of interest and the reference image is combined and formulated such that both problems can be solved as a single minimum squared distance problem efficiently using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The resulting correspondence and relative gamma information is used to estimate the geometric transformation between the target image and the reference image, as well as perform gamma correction between the images. Experimental results demonstrate that good registration and relative gamma estimation accuracy can be achieved using the proposed method, making it well-suited for registering images captured under different levels of exposure.
