Clustering of genes using their expression data has been a major topic in recent years. A large amount of gene expression data even in time series are obtained by microarray technology. Finding gene clusters with similar functions and interconnecting genes by networks has an important role in mining biological gene functional analysis. In this paper, two phase functional clustering has been presented as a new approach in gene clustering. The proposed approach is based on finding functional patterns of time series gene expression data by fuzzy C-means (FCM) and K-means methods. The gene function similarities over a number of experimental conditions are extracted using Pearson correlation between expression patterns of genes. This leads to visualize genes interconnections.

In this paper, a generalized predictive control (GPC) is represented over state space and then is shown to be separated into the receding horizon control (RHC) and the steady-state Kalman filter. By utilizing only the information on the recent finite inputs and outputs, we propose a new finite memory GPC (FMGPC) that consists of the RHC and a finite impulse response (FIR) filter. The proposed FMGPC will be compared with a conventional GPC for an input-output (I/O) model and the existing receding horizon finite memory control (RHFMC) for a state space model.

Application of reinforcement learning for segmentation of transrectal ultrasound images

Background: Among different medical image modalities, ultrasound imaging has a very widespread clinical use. But, due to some factors, such as poor image contrast, noise and missing or diffuse boundaries, the ultrasound images are inherently difficult to segment. An important application is estimation of the location and volume of the prostate in transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) images. For this purpose, manual segmentation is a tedious and time consuming procedure. Methods: We introduce a new method for the segmentation of the prostate in transrectal ultrasound images, using a reinforcement learning scheme. This algorithm is used to find the appropriate local values for sub-images and to extract the prostate. It contains an offline stage, where the reinforcement learning agent uses some images and manually segmented versions of these images to learn from. The reinforcement agent is provided with reward/punishment, determined objectively to explore/exploit the solution space. After this stage, the agent has acquired knowledge stored in the Q-matrix. The agent can then use this knowledge for new input images to extract a coarse version of the prostate. Results: We have carried out experiments to segment TRUS images. The results demonstrate the potential of this approach in the field of medical image segmentation. Conclusion: By using the proposed method, we can find the appropriate local values and segment the prostate. This approach can be used for segmentation tasks containing one object of interest. Data Center Networks present a novel, unique and rich environment for algorithm development and deployment. Projects are underway in the IEEE 802.1 standards body, especially in the Data Center Bridging Task Group, to define new switched Ethernet functions for data center use. One such project is IEEE 802.1Qau, the Congestion Notification project, whose aim is to develop an Ethernet congestion control algorithm for hardware implementation. A major contribution of this paper is the description and analysis of the congestion control algorithm-QCN, for Quantized Congestion Notification - which has been developed for this purpose. A second contribution of the paper is an articulation of the Averaging Principle: a simple method for making congestion control loops stable in the face of increasing lags. This contrasts with two well-known methods of stabilizing control loops as lags increase;namely, (i) increasing the order of the system by sensing and feeding back higher-order derivatives of the state, and (ii) determining the lag and then choosing appropriate loop gains. Both methods have been applied in the congestion control literature to obtain stable algorithms for high bandwidth-delay product paths in the Internet. However, these methods are either undesirable or infeasible in the Ethernet context The Averaging Principle provides a simple alternative, one which we are able to theoretically characterize.

This research developed the moisture-resistance of printed circuit board (PCB) laminate prototypes based on the non-toxic composite materials made from epoxidized linseed oil, melamine polyphosphate, and flax fibers. One of the key issues associated with using renewable base materials in composites is their sensitivity to moisture. A characterization of the properties of the 'green' printed circuit boards developed in the present study showed that moisture absorption for untreated fiber laminates (4.87% vs. established limit <0.8% for FR4 boards over a 24 hour submersion period) compromised electrical resistance and decreased dielectric breakdown to an unacceptable level. A theoretical model was used to target methods for reducing moisture absorption. Based on this model, we found that reductions in fiber diffusivity and fiber volume fraction substantially reduce composite diffusivity. Through the use of chemical treatment, moisture absorption over a 24 hour time period was reduced from 4.87% to 1.15%, which improved electrical properties. At the end of this study, 15 of 18 PCB property requirements were met, while 3 moisture-critical property targets were narrowly missed.

Decreased agricultural profit margins and recent bioterrorism concerns have led to an increased interest in monitoring livestock health. Heart rate and core body temperature are traditional vital parameters for cattle health assessment, as they provide warnings for illness and disease. However, obtaining these data in the field is time and labor intensive, which speaks to the need for solutions that provide continuous and automatic acquisition of these parameters. This paper presents the design of a pill that can remain in an animal's reticulum and use electrocardiographic techniques to ascertain heart rate. The wired prototype has been tested with a fistulated steer. These tests demonstrate that consistent heart vector data can be acquired even in the presence of animal movement and rumination. After minor processing, these signals are suitable for use with peak detection circuitry that can automate heart rate determination.

Controlling an underactuated manipulator with less actuators than degree of freedom is a challenging problem, specifically when it is to force the underactuated manipulator to track a given trajectory or to be configurated at a specific position in the work space. This paper presents a cascade sliding mode tracking controller for set-point regulation of 2-DOF underactuated manipulators. This work builds on an observation that an underactuated manipulator can be treated as two subsystems. Consequently, a cascade sliding mode tracking controller can be designed as follows. First, a sliding mode surface is designed for both subsystems, this two sliding surfaces represent a first layer in the design architecture. A second layer sliding mode surface is then constructed based on the first layer sliding surface. The cascaded sliding mode controller is therefor deduced in terms of Lyapunov stability theorem. Robustness issues to bounded disturbances are then investigated. Simulation results on 2-DOF whiling pendulum are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.

designing haptic displays is one of the main challenges in creating virtual reality systems with the sense of touch. The design of the hardware and software of haptic interfaces depends critically on the capabilities of the human haptic system. For example, force feedback interfaces, due to inherent hardware limitations such as friction and actuator saturation, present forces to users in the case of interactions with a virtual environment which are only approximations of the forces that they would feel if they were interacting with the real world Thus, quantitative human studies are required to obtain the impact on human performance of these approximations in the forces from the haptic devices. First, the focus of this paper is on the quantitative measures of human factors (force thresholds) that affect the design specifications of force feedback haptic interfaces when the human user or the object are in relative motion. Second the effects of two direction of forces and the increment/decrement of forces are also studied through two experiments. It appears that the JNDs of human force perception depend on the force direction and the force increment/decrement, and these two variables must be incorporated in an efficient haptic design technique when the user's hand is in motion. © 2007 IEEE.

This paper presents a flexible controller structure for concurrent processing of memory centric coarse grain data flows. We propose a design flow based on block level pipelining where concurrency among processing blocks is fully maintained. The controller is dynamically reconfigurable to support dynamic data-flow structure changes by localizing control signals. The proposed control design method isolates controllers and processing logics such that system integration is simplified while controllers are locally configured from orthogonal global information. The controller also supports interfacing with external processors for asynchronous processing. The controller for heterogeneous processing blocks is synthesized and verified using Verilog and SystemC on FPGA. We present an example demonstrating the effectiveness of the controllers where dynamic reconfiguration of the execution is feasible. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2007.
