A domain decomposition method (DDM) is developed to improve the efficiency of the finite element simulation of interconnects on multilayered printed circuit boards, which helps reduce memory requirements and CPU time without sacrificing the final accuracy. It takes advantage of the multilayered structure and decomposes the board into several single layers separated by power or ground planes. The simulation of each layer can be carried out independently. Connections between neighboring layers are realized by small holes ("vias"), whose computation is accomplished in a trivial final combination procedure. The total memory requirement is only related to the largest single layer. The CPU time is also found to be less than that of the full board simulation. This domain decomposition method further permits a convenient and practical way for parallel computation.

In an idealized restructured electricity industry, market participants always find economic incentives to invest in new generation and in new transmission. Intuitively, one can say that generation and transmission expansion projects can be a complement or a substitute of each other. This paper studies to what extent generation and transmission expansion projects are interchangeable. This is done with a radial network and with one that includes loop flows. This work also shows that, whenever considering a transmission expansion, the changes in the resistance and in the reactance of the transmission lines cannot be disregarded; just increasing the capacity of the line is not enough. The social value of the investment, either in generation or transmission, is affected by the presence of market power. This is shown with a simple radial network under the assumption that the firm in the import constrained area behaves as a monopolist.

The OQ(λ) algorithm benefits from an extension of eligibility traces introduced as opposition trace. This new technique is a combination of the idea of opposition and eligibility traces to deal with large state space problems in reinforcement learning applications. In our previous works the comparison of the results of OQ(λ) and conventional Watkins' Q(λ) reflected a remarkable increase in performance for the OQ(λ) algorithm. However the Markovian update of opposition traces is an issue which is investigated in this paper. It has been assumed that the opposite state can be presented to the agent. This may limit the usability of the technique to deterministic environments. In order to relax this assumption the non-Markovian opposition-based Q(λ) (NOQ(λ)) is introduced in this work. The new method is a hybrid of Markovian update for eligibility traces and non-Markovian-based update for opposition traces. The experimental results show improvements of learning speed for the proposed technique compared to Q(λ) and OQ(λ). The new technique performs faster than OQ(λ) algorithm with the same success rate and can be employed for broader range of applications since it does not require determining state transition

作者： Dr. Roy L. Streit Since 1992 Dr. Streit has focused a significant amount of his energy to assignment problems in acoustic warfare data fusion systems. This work led him to the formulation of the PDD Principle a broadly useful theoretical method that enables the derivation of new classes of discrete-continuous estimation algorithms for solving assignment problems without requiring enumeration and pruning. In recognition of his outstanding work in this area Dr. Streit received the NAVSEA Scientist of the Year Award for 1997. Dr. Streit has also been pursuing avenues for analyzing the loss in broadband detection performance of an acoustic array in the presence of interferences. Because examining all possible separations between the signal and many interferers is infeasible he has proposed a Poisson process model for the number and location (s) of the interferers. In this same time period Dr. Streit has also been investigating issues in environmental modeling and localization by proposing a novel integral method for solving the bearings-only target motion analysis problem which enables a natural heuristic for compensating for mismatch between the model predictions and the real world. Most recently Dr. Streit has proposed the Numerical ACoustic Hull ARray (NACHAR) Project as a revolutionary and ambitious approach to hull array design. Its premise is that optimizing the detection capability of large hull arrays requires the full integration of hull sensor array and beamformer design processes. Because NACHAR crosses an unusual number of technical disciplines it involves researchers from several departments. The diversity of Dr. Streif s technical background makes him uniquely suited to lead the project Dr. Streifs truly impressive scientific achievements are complemented by a noteworthy list of professional activities that accentuate his value to Division Newport and the Navy. An application of wavelet packet is presented for electrocardiogram (ECG) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) characteristics detection in this study. A fully automated system is developed to detect the "R" peaks which are beat designators and are used consequently to locate other ECG characteristics. They include "P", "Q", "S" and "T" waves along with "ST" segment shift. The peaks and the area under the peaks of MRS signals are also detected. The Daubechies wavelets are selected as base processing filters. Frequency ordered wavelet packets (FOWPT) is utilized to generate a time–frequency plot of the signal used for further processing. The algorithm is validated on MIT-BIH database. The proposed beat detector achieved sensitivity of 99.18%±2.75 and a positive predictivity of 98.00±4.45. The "P" wave detector achieved sensitivity of 51.69% and a positive predictivity of 53.64%.

In nanometer-scale VLSI technologies, several interconnect issues like routing congestion and interconnect delay have become the main concerns in placement. However, all previous placement approaches optimize some very primitive interconnect models during placement. These models are far from the actual interconnect implementation in the routing stage. As a result, placement solution considered to be good by primitive interconnect models may turn out to be poor after routing. In addition, the placement may not even be routable and timing closure may not be achievable. In this paper, we propose to address the inconsistency between the placement and routing objectives by fully integrating global routing into placement. As a first attempt to this novel approach, we focus on routability issue. We call the proposed algorithm for routing congestion minimization IPR (integrated placement and routing). To ensure the algorithm to be computationally efficient, efficient placement and routing algorithms FastPlace, FastDP and FastRoute are integrated, and well-designed methods are proposed to integrate them efficiently and effectively. Experimental results show that IPR reduces overflow by 36%, global routing wirelength by 3.6%, and runtime by 36% comparing to ROOSTER, which is the previous best academic routability- driven placer.

This paper proposes robust finite impulse response (FIR) filters for linear continuous-time state space models with bounded uncertainties. A set of all reachable current states under bounded uncertainties is determined from inputs and outputs on a recent finite time interval. If some condition is met, this set is shown to be represented in an ellipsoidal form. The derivation procedure is much simplified by utilizing the result on the optimal tracking control with an indefinite cost function. In order to minimize the maximum estimation error due to uncertainties, the center of the reachable ellipsoidal set is chosen as an estimated state. It is shown through simulation that the proposed robust FIR filter achieves a more robust performance than existing robust infinite impulse response (IIR) filters.

A new clustering technique by the use of multiple swarms is proposed. The proposed technique mimics the behavior of biological swarms which explore food situated in several places. We model the clustering problem using particle swarm optimization (PSO) approach. The proposed method considers multiple cooperating swarms to find centers of clusters. By assigning a portion of the solution space to each swarm, the exploration ability to find the solution is enhanced. Moreover, the cooperation among swarms increases the between-class distance. The proposed method outperforms k-means clustering as well as conventional PSO-based clustering techniques

Since several lung diseases are diagnosed based on the patterns of lung tissue in medical images, texture segmentation is an essential part of the most computer aided diagnosis (CAD) systems. In this paper a novel composite method is proposed to segment the abnormality in lung tissue in pediatric CT images. The proposed approach is based on wavelet transform and intensity similarities. Our focus is on the honeycomb texture in lung tissue. After segmenting lung regions, wavelet transform is applied to decompose the image. The vertical subimage of lung is thresholded to extract high resolution areas. Then the regions with low pixel intensities are kept and grown to segment the honeycomb regions. The proposed method has been tested on 91 pediatric chest CT images containing healthy and unhealthy lung images. Statistical analysis shows the sensitivity of 100% along with the specificity of 94.44%.
