A discrete-analog filter of the second order with three frequency-setting capacitors has been developed, where the electronic keys are controlled by pulse sequences that do not intersect in time. It has been shown that in the proposed filter the pole frequency can be changed by changing the capacitance of the capacitor C1. In this case, the pole attenuation depends on the resistance of the resistor R5, the transmission coefficients are changed by resistors R1 or R2, and when changing one of the parameters, all other filter parameters remain unchanged. The performance of this filter is confirmed by the results of computer modeling in the Micro-Cap environment.

Modeling trajectories in cigarette smoking prevalence, initiation and quitting for populations and subgroups of populations is important for policy planning and evaluation. This paper proposes an agent-based model (ABM) design for simulating the smoking behaviors of a population using the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation - Behavior (COM-B) model. Capability, Opportunity and Motivation are modeled as latent composite attributes which are composed of observable factors associated with smoking behaviors. Three forms of the COM-B model are proposed to explain the transitions between smoking behaviors: initiating regular smoking uptake, making a quit attempt and quitting successfully. The ABM design follows object-oriented principles and extends an existing generic software architecture for mechanism-based modeling. The potential of the model to assess the impact of smoking policies is illustrated and discussed.

Safety of closed-loop drug infusion systems is an issue often raised as a matter of concern. As a result, many closed-loop controlsystems are reported in the literature merely as computer simulation studies and few ever reach the stage of physical realisation and formal clinical evaluation. We address the safety issues involved with such systems by describing the development of a portable closed-loop control system for atracurium-induced muscle relaxation. This is a safety-critical system particularly when applied to brain and eye surgery where movement could have serious deleterious effects. The benefits of closed-loop muscle relaxation in providing stable surgical operating conditions over a wide range of patient sensitivities while infusing the minimum amount of drug makes this a worthwhile aim and serves to demonstrate safety issues which are generally applicable to other closed-loop drug infusion systems. It is hoped that the described methodology will facilitate and encourage the clinical application of closed-loop drug infusion systems so that clinical staff and patients may receive the benefits of closed-loop drug therapy.

This paper is addressed at the difficulty of accurately modelling a two-flexible-link manipulator system, which is a necessary pre-requisite for future work developing a high-performance controller for such manipulators. Recent work concerned with the development of an accurate single-flexible-link model is first reviewed and then the expansion of a single-link model into a two-flexible-link system in a way which properly takes into account the coupling and interactions between the two links is discussed. The method of approach taken is to calculate the elastic and rigid motions of the links separately and then to combine these according to the principle of superposition. The application of the model developed is demonstrated in a simulated two-flexible-link system.

Model-driven infusion systems in anaesthesia overcome the difficulties in obtaining on-line measurements of controlled variables. A linear pharmacokinetic model for ketamine was used to achieve target blood concentrations and was implemented using a palmtop PC. Although the use of ketamine for analgesia in total intravenous anaesthesia with propofol has been reported, this is the first such application to spontaneously breathing patients. Preliminary results show this to be a useful system, which may easily be applied to other intravenous anaesthetic agents.

The goal of this study was to examine the ability of Neural Networks to recognise the levels of anaesthetic state of a patient. Data obtained under different levels of anaesthesia have been modelled for the purpose. It is shown that inferential parameters can be used to recognise the levels of anaesthesia. In addition to demonstrating the ability of neural networks for classification we were interested in understanding the classification strategy discovered by the neural networks. Multivariate data analysis techniques, namely Principal Components Analysis and Canonical Discriminant Variates, were applied to analyse the resultant networks. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
