The segmentation of the breast from the background and the pectoral muscle is the first pre-processing step in computerised mammographic analysis. This problem is usually solved by dividing it into two different segmentation strategies, one for the background and another one for the pectoral muscle. In this paper we tackle this problem jointly using a supervised single strategy. Namely, from a set of manually segmented mammograms, we model each of the three regions (breast, pectoral muscle, and background) using position, intensity, and texture information. Although the approach requires a training step, it allows a fast and reliable segmentation of new mammograms. The obtained results using 149 mammograms of the MIAS database show a high degree of overlap between manual and automatic segmentation. © 2014 IEEE.

White Rabbit (WR) is an Ethernet-based technology that provides data transfer and synchronization in sensor networks with a sub-nanosecond accuracy and a precision of 20 picoseconds. WR networks are composed of switches and nodes forming a tree hierarchical model where end-nodes are connected to different sensors and actuators whilst WR switches are intermediate elements that are used as time reference distributors through the whole network. WR networks access requires the utilization of specialized timing interfaces. To allow their utilization on commodity hardware, we have developed a White Rabbit Network Interface Card (WR-NIC). The WR-NIC is composed of a WR node provided with the proper gateware that can be plugged in a PCIe slot of a conventional computer and can be controlled by a Linux kernel driver as a standard network interface card (NIC). The same node allows a standalone operation mode thanks to the utilization of a C/C++ library called CALoE, which provides the device with remotely control features. It has been widely reported that interactions with and expectations of technology differ across cultural contexts. Concepts such as 'usability' have shown to be context- dependent, thus user interfaces intuitive to one group of users appears counter-intuitive to the others. In an attempt to localise a user interface of a tablet based system aimed at preserving Indigenous Knowledge for rural Herero communities, we present findings from two sites in Namibia, complementing prior research. Participants who had little or no previous experience with technologies informed our endeavour of aligning local indigenous knowledge practices with digital object taxonomies. We present a method (picture card sorting) of discovering taxonomies that influence the users' interaction with a prototype system to preserve indigenous knowledge. Finally we describe the design implications, a new design approach based on findings and present preliminary evaluations in a collaboration village as well as design export results with another indigenous group. This paper presents a design of an elliptical patch textile antenna having operating frequency at 2.45 GHz for RFID application. The proposed antenna consists of elliptical patch on Dacron fabric (□ r =3) as substrate followed by a partial ground at the back of the substrate. The overall size of the proposed antenna is 45×38 mm 2 . The proposed antenna has a gain of 3.386 dB with VSWR of 1.07. The performance of the proposed antenna is analyzed under four angles of bending. The effect of change in feed length is also focused. The characteristics, low profile and compact size of the antenna depicts as a potential candidate for RFID application. CST Microwave Studio package is used for design and simulation purpose.

The KM3NeT research infrastructure is currently under construction at two locations in the Mediterranean Sea. The KM3NeT/ORCA water-Cherenkov neutrino detector off the French coast will instrument several megatons of seawater with photosensors. Its main objective is the determination of the neutrino mass ordering. This work aims at demonstrating the general applicability of deep convolutional neural networks to neutrino telescopes, using simulated datasets for the KM3NeT/ORCA detector as an example. To this end, the networks are employed to achieve reconstruction and classification tasks that constitute an alternative to the analysis pipeline presented for KM3NeT/ORCA in the KM3NeT Letter of Intent. They are used to infer event reconstruction estimates for the energy, the direction, and the interaction point of incident neutrinos. The spatial distribution of Cherenkov light generated by charged particles induced in neutrino interactions is classified as shower- or track-like, and the main background processes associated with the detection of atmospheric neutrinos are recognized. Performance comparisons to machine-learning classification and maximum-likelihood reconstruction algorithms previously developed for KM3NeT/ORCA are provided. It is shown that this application of deep convolutional neural networks to simulated datasets for a large-volume neutrino telescope yields competitive reconstruction results and performance improvements with respect to classical approaches. Eye blinking classical conditioning is one of the most extensively studied paradigms related to the cerebellum. In this work we have defined a realistic cerebellar model through the use of artificial spiking neural networks, testing it in computational simulations reproducing the eye blinking classical conditioning in multiple sessions of acquisition and extinction. We used two models: one with only the cortical plasticity and another with three plasticity sites, one plasticity at cortical level and two at nuclear level. We have compared the behavioral outcome of the two different models and proved that the model with a distributed plasticity produces a faster and more stable acquisition of conditioned responses in the reacquisition phase with respect to the single plasticity model. This behavior is explained by the effect of the nuclear plasticities, which have a slow dynamics and can express memory consolidation and savings.

Crowdsourced multimedia data poses several challenges when it is collected, stored, indexed, retrieved, and visualized. Examples of crowd source multimedia data are social sensors, vehicle sensors, physical sensors, human sensors, etc. Analyzing such multimodal and diversified crowdsourced data provides very rich understanding about the need of individuals within a crowd. Such understanding makes it possible to tailor services to individuals' needs, also called context-aware services. In this paper, we propose a spatial multimedia big data framework that can collect multimedia data from 1) a very large crowd equipped with multi-sensory smartphones, 2) vehicles, and 3) social networks. A set of multimedia services are offered to users to support their spatio-temporal activities. These include but not limited to 1) simple user interfaces to utilize multimedia services for instant guidance, 2) navigation to points of interests (POI), and 3) efficient and cost effective intra-city rides to users. The big data framework is designed to handle a very large number of multimedia spatio-temporal queries in real-time. The system is a pilot project and will be deployed during the event of Hajj 2015 when over three million pilgrims from all over the world will visit Makkah, Saudi Arabia to perform their Hajj rituals.

Frequency regulation becomes a non-trivial issue due to an increase in renewable resources and power electronicsbased loads. Direct load control (DLC), a strategy of autonomous demand response, has been applied to mitigate operational burdens on generation units for frequency regulation. Variable speed heat pumps (VSHPs) have been regarded as promising devices that can respond to the DLC signal updated every 2 or 4 seconds. This paper presents a dynamic model of the VSHP that is simplified for real-time simulation studies but still sufficiently comprehensive to analyze its physical and operational characteristics. Furthermore, a variable speed drive (VSD)-controlled induction motor model is designed together with an indirect torque controller for the adjustment of the VSHP input power. In addition, based on experimental setup and data, a test room was modeled to estimate the effect of the DLC-enabled VSHP on indoor temperature. Simulation case studies performed in MATLAB/SIMULINK verify that the VSHP can be well utilized as DLC-enabled loads for frequency regulation while ensuring residents' comfort and long-term device performance. © 2014 IEEE.

KM3NeT is a research infrastructure being installed in the deep Mediterranean Sea. It will house a neutrino telescope comprising hundreds of networked moorings – detection units or strings – equipped with optical instrumentation to detect the Cherenkov radiation generated by charged particles from neutrino-induced collisions in its vicinity. In comparison to moorings typically used for oceanography, several key features of the KM3NeT string are different: the instrumentation is contained in transparent and thus unprotected glass spheres;two thin Dyneema® ropes are used as strength members;and a thin delicate backbone tube with fibre-optics and copper wires for data and power transmission, respectively, runs along the full length of the mooring. Also, compared to other neutrino telescopes such as ANTARES in the Mediterranean Sea and GVD in Lake Baikal, the KM3NeT strings are more slender to minimise the amount of material used for support of the optical sensors. Moreover, the rate of deploying a large number of strings in a period of a few years is unprecedented. For all these reasons, for the installation of the KM3NeT strings, a custom-made, fast deployment method was designed. Despite the length of several hundreds of metres, the slim design of the string allows it to be compacted into a small, re-usable spherical launching vehicle instead of deploying the mooring weight down from a surface vessel. After being lowered to the seafloor, the string unfurls to its full length with the buoyant launching vehicle rolling along the two ropes.
