The gSeaGen code is a GENIE-based application developed to efficiently generate high statistics samples of events, induced by neutrino interactions, detectable in a neutrino telescope. The gSeaGen code is able to generate events induced by all neutrino flavours, considering topological differences between track-type and shower-like events. Neutrino interactions are simulated taking into account the density and the composition of the media surrounding the detector. The segmentation of the breast from the background and the pectoral muscle is the first pre-processing step in computerised mammographic analysis. This problem is usually solved by dividing it into two different segmentation strategies, one for the background and another one for the pectoral muscle. In this paper we tackle this problem jointly using a supervised single strategy. Namely, from a set of manually segmented mammograms, we model each of the three regions (breast, pectoral muscle, and background) using position, intensity, and texture information. Although the approach requires a training step, it allows a fast and reliable segmentation of new mammograms. The obtained results using 149 mammograms of the MIAS database show a high degree of overlap between manual and automatic segmentation.

The use of prior studies to complement the information in Breast Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DCE-MRI) can help to reduce the currently high false positive ratios. Registration is a fundamental part of this process, as registration algorithms provide automatic correspondences between current and prior studies. The deformable nature of the breast and differences in acquisition protocols make this a particularly challenging problem. In this paper we study three registration algorithms (Affine, SyN and Demons) applied to DCE-MRI images obtained from clinical practice. The methodology followed for this study included using segmentation algorithms in order to focus on the area of the breast. Anatomical landmarks were also added by an expert for evaluation purposes. This allowed us to use an anatomical-landmark-based measure in order to evaluate the quality of registration. Additionally, an image metric was also used for the same purpose. Results, shown to be statistically significant indicate how SyN obtains the best results in terms of the two measures considered. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Evolutionary coupling is defined as the implicit relationship between two or more software artifacts that are frequently changed together. In this study we investigate the effect of evolutionary coupling on defect proneness of a large financial legacy software in an industrial software development environment. We collected historical data for 5 years from 3 different software repositories containing 150 thousand files on 274 modules. Our results indicate that there is a positive correlation between evolutionary coupling and defect measures. Furthermore, we built linear and logistic regression models by using evolutionary coupling measures in order to explain defects. Although regression analysis results show that evolutionary coupling measures can be useful to explain defects, especially for modules in which high correlation is detected, explanatory power decreases dramatically with the decreasing correlation. © 2014 Authors.

Astrophysical sources of gravitational waves, such as binary neutron star and black hole mergers or core-collapse supernovae, can drive relativistic outows, giving rise to non-thermal high-energy emission. High-energy neutrinos are signatures of such outows. The detection of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from common sources could help establish the connection between the dynamics of the progenitor and the properties of the outow. We searched for associated emission of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from astrophysical transients with minimal assumptions using data from Advanced LIGO from its first observing run O1, and data from the Antares and IceCube neutrino observatories from the same time period. We focused on candidate events whose astrophysical origin could not be determined from a single messenger. We found no significant coincident candidate, which we used to constrain the rate density of astrophysical sources dependent on their gravitational wave and neutrino emission processes. The KM3NeT Collaboration runs a multi-site neutrino observatory in the Mediterranean Sea. Water Cherenkov particle detectors, deep in the sea and far off the coasts of France and Italy, are already taking data while incremental construction progresses. Data Acquisition Control software is operating off-shore detectors as well as testing and qualification stations for their components. The software, named Control Unit, is highly modular. It can undergo upgrades and reconfiguration with the acquisition running. Interplay with the central database of the Collaboration is obtained in a way that allows for data taking even if Internet links fail. In order to simplify the management of computing resources in the long term, and to cope with possible hardware failures of one or more computers, the KM3NeT Control Unit software features a custom dynamic resource provisioning and failover technology, which is especially important for ensuring continuity in case of rare transient events in multi-messenger astronomy. The software architecture relies on ubiquitous tools and broadly adopted technologies and has been successfully tested on several operating systems. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. KM3NeT is a research infrastructure located in the Mediterranean Sea, that will consist of two deep-sea Cherenkov neutrino detectors. With one detector (ARCA), the KM3NeT Collaboration aims at identifying and studying TeV-PeV astrophysical neutrino sources. With the other detector (ORCA), the neutrino mass ordering will be determined by studying GeV-scale atmospheric neutrino oscillations. The first KM3NeT detection units were deployed at the Italian and French sites between 2015 and 2017. In this paper, a description of the detector is presented, together with a summary of the procedures used to calibrate the detector in-situ. Finally, the dependence of muon rate between 2232−3386 m seawater depth is compared with a parameterisation of the underwater muon flux. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Semiconductor technology scaling makes chips more sensitive to faults. This paper describes the DeSyRe design approach and its runtime management for future reliable embedded Multiprocessor Systems-on-Chip (MPSoCs). A light weight runtime system is described for shared-memory MPSoCs to support fault-tolerant execution upon detection of transient and permanent faults. The DeSyRe runtime system offers re-execution of tasks that suffer from transient faults and task-migration in cases where a worker processor is permanently faulty. In addition, a faulty worker can potentially remain usable, increasing systems fault-tolerance. This is achieved using alternative task implementations, which avoid the faulty circuit and are indicated in the application-code via pragma annotations, as well as by repairing a faulty core via hardware reconfiguration. Thereby, the system can be dynamically adapted using one or multiple of the above mechanisms to mitigate faults. The DeSyRe runtime system is evaluated using micro-benchmarks running on a Virtex-6 FPGA MPSoC. Results suggest that our enhance default-tolerant runtime system can successfully and efficiently execute all application tasks under a variety of fault cases.

The existence of diffuse Galactic neutrino production is expected from cosmic ray interactions with Galactic gas and radiation fields. Thus, neutrinos are a unique messenger offering the opportunity to test the products of Galactic cosmic ray interactions up to energies of hundreds of TeV. Here we present a search for this production using ten years of ANTARES track and shower data, as well as seven years of IceCube track data. The data are combined into a joint likelihood test for neutrino emission according to the KRAγ model assuming a 5 PeV per nucleon Galactic cosmic ray cutoff. No significant excess is found. As a consequence, the limits presented in this work start constraining the model parameter space for Galactic cosmic ray production and transport. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.
