Capturing users' spatio-temporal context by recognizing their interests, locations, history and activities, and thereafter providing context-aware services is a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a spatio-temporal zoning model that takes different context dimensions into account and try to recommend necessary services to users in a personalized way. First, we propose a generic zoning model with unrestricted set of contexts where both spatial and temporal dimensions are relaxed, followed by two semi-restricted zoning models in which either spatial or temporal dimension is relaxed, while the other one is restricted. Finally, we show the model requiring restricted spatio-temporal zoning that applies to the scenario where millions of users need to perform some activities that have to be performed in a certain location and at a certain temporal period. We use the above zoning model for Hajj and Umrah events to define pilgrim's spatio-temporal contexts by capturing their real-time and historic activities through their smartphones' sensory data. This allows to intelligently recommend a set of necessary services to the users. We present a few of the implementations introduced in our proposed system.

We propose a context aware framework that offers a set of cloud-based services to support a very large Hajj and Umrah crowd by capturing their contexts using smartphones. The proposed framework captures the individual's context, provides a set of adapted services, and allows being in touch with a subset of one's community of interest. We leverage the spatiotemporal sensory data captured by our framework to define users' contexts for optimized services. Our proposed framework is also envisioned to assist the Hajj and Umrah authorities to (1) improve Hajj & Umrah documentation, (2) improve Hajj organization through better understanding of pilgrims' (individual and crowd) spatial and temporal behavior and needs, and (3) protect pilgrims' environment through environmental monitoring. In particular, the developed methods, techniques, and algorithms will support the pilgrimage quality of experience. We have tested our system through end-user subjects and due to apply for the upcoming Hajj events. We present our implementation details and the general impression of end users about our system.

As the penetration of photovoltaic (PV) systems on building rooftops increases, the accumulated effects of the rooftop PV output fluctuation on the electric utility are no longer negligible. Energy storage systems have been used to smooth PV power, especially when the building load becomes low. Commercial buildings are increasingly expected to charge or discharge plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), which can be regarded as distributed energy storage. This paper presents an alternative power system for commercial buildings, which compensates for rooftop PV power fluctuation by charging or discharging PHEV batteries, and moreover, participates in tracking frequency regulation signals. The proposed system is designed and implemented using steady-state and dynamic models of power converters and controllers. Simulation studies performed in MATLAB/SIMULINK verify that the objective can be achieved under various conditions, determined by such factors as the maximum voltage, minimum state-of-charge, and desired PHEV charging end-time. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper presents an automated code generation and validation, verification approach to convert model based developments into IEC 61131-3 conform function blocks. IEC 61131-3 programming languages are supported by PLC manufacturers and software environment developers and provide the possibility that novel and intelligent algorithms can be directly operated on industrial accepted systems. Railway and transportation also receive drastic changes from purely hardware based systems to microcontroller + software driven systems. However, the conversion has to follow certain steps to ensure that the adaptation is done correctly and functionality is not alternated, added or deleted. Concepts suggested by different international standards such as the IEC 61508 can help to derive a tool chain to verify the generated code.

The Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo observatories recently discovered gravitational waves from a binary neutron star inspiral. A short gamma-ray burst (GRB) that followed the merger of this binary was also recorded by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (Fermi-GBM), and the Anticoincidence Shield for the Spectrometer for the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL), indicating particle acceleration by the source. The precise location of the event was determined by optical detections of emission following the merger. We searched for high-energy neutrinos from the merger in the GeV–EeV energy range using the ANTARES, IceCube, and Pierre Auger Observatories. No neutrinos directionally coincident with the source were detected within ±500 s around the merger time. Additionally, no MeV neutrino burst signal was detected coincident with the merger. We further carried out an extended search in the direction of the source for high-energy neutrinos within the 14-day period following the merger, but found no evidence of emission. We used these results to probe dissipation mechanisms in relativistic outflows driven by the binary neutron star merger. The non-detection is consistent with model predictions of short GRBs observed at a large off-axis angle. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper is focused on the development of intelligent classifiers in the area of biomedicine, focusing on the problem of diagnosing cardiac diseases based on the electrocardiogram (ECG), or more precisely, on the differentiation of several arrhythmia using a large data set, by an autonomous intelligent system which can be used as an expert system to support human experts in the diagnosis and, moreover, to autonomously display an alarm to the user in case of a dangerous situation. We will study and imitate the ECG treatment methodologies and the features extracted from the electrocardiograms used by the researchers, which obtained the best results in the PhysioNet Challenge. We will extract a great amount of features, partly those used by these researchers and some additional others we considered to be important for the distinction previously mentioned. A new method based on different paradigms of intelligent computation (such as extreme learning machine, support vector machine and feature selection) will be used to select the most relevant characteristics and to obtain a classifier capable of autonomously distinguishing the different types arrhythmia from the ECG signal. Finally, the behavior and performance of the classifier have been tested using data from several cardiac pathologies, obtaining good classification results.

The electrocardiogram (ECG) is a noninvasive technique used to reflect underlying heart conditions by measuring the electrical activity of the heart, and nowadays it is possible with just a few derivation (with just only two), obtain important information in order than an expert can recognize abnormal heart rhythms (the heart rate is very fast, very slow, or irregular) or a heart attack (myocardial infarction), and if it was recent or some time ago. In this paper, several intelligent classifiers are developed, focusing on the problem of diagnosing cardiac diseases based on the electrocardiogram (ECG), or more precisely, on the differentiation of several arrhythmia using a large data set. We will study and imitate the ECG treatment methodologies and the features extracted from the electrocardiograms used by the researchers, which obtained the best results in the PhysioNet Challenge (***/). Effective design of shared mediated spaces, information and connectedness requires theory and practice from a range of disciplines such as found in European projects like Together Anywhere, Together Anytime (TA2) and the EIT ICT Labs Mediating Presence activity. Building on this work we continue to investigate the changes in the European digital media industry such as changed traditional distribution of media content and the progressive integration of (social) communication means in information distribution and shared mediated spaces. Our past research has given valuable insights in how to design and evaluate systems and services that provide a high quality of experience, in how trust is established in mediated environments, and how the formation of tacit communication between participants in new distributed and connected media is negotiated. In the new Seventh Framework Program project COnnected Media and Presence from European Institute of technology (COMPEIT) we aim to enhance the quality of experience in face-to-face and broadcast communication further in three domains: 1) Spatial connectedness, 2) Social connectedness and 3) Information connectedness, by developing three key services: Shared Experience with Tangible Interaction (SETI);Broadcast Presence Studio (BPS) and Mixed-Reality Interaction (MRI). The quality of experience of these services will be enhanced in terms of for example: spatial connectedness, by providing shared spaces and supporting spatial features such as eye contact;social connectedness, by using natural means for interaction suiting different settings and activities;and information connectedness, by providing better means to share, manipulate and use information suiting different task or activities. In this paper we will discuss the background of this work and give an overview of our planned future work in COMPEIT. © 2013 ACM.

This paper compares the use of RGB and HSV histograms during the execution of an Evolutionary Algorithm. This algorithm generates abstract images that try to match the histograms of a target image. Three different fitness functions have been used to compare: the differences between the individual with the RGB histogram of the test image, the HSV histogram, and an average of the two histograms at the same time. Results show that the HSV fitness also increases the similarities of the RGB (and therefore, the average) more than the other two measures.

Mastermind is a puzzle in which a hidden code of length ? and made with k colors has to be discovered via making guesses of the code and receiving hints that express the distance from the guess to the code, in terms of number of symbols in the right position and with the right color. Solutions to these problem are mainly heuristic and thus finding the correct parameters for these solutions has to be done via systematic experimentation. Since diversity in the population is one of the main factors affecting performance, in this paper we will experiment with selective pressure via two different parameters: population size and size of tournament in tournament *** will study the influence of them in three different measures: algorithm performance (measured in average number of guesses needed), number of evaluations and time needed to find the solution. We will prove that while, in general, increasing population size improves performance, there is an optimal size over which no further improvement is achieved. On the other hand, tournament size does not have a clear influence on performance, although it influences time needed to find the *** will also show that the number of evaluations is correlated positively with time, and it increases with population size so that a trade-off has to be found among solution quality and population size. After evaluating the result of the experiments, we will try to advance a rule of thumb for sizing population for the general MasterMind problem.
