The basic principles of IF/THEN rules in rough set theory are analyzed first, and then the automatic process of knowledge acquisition is given. The numerical data is qualitatively processed by the classification of membership functions and membership degrees to get the normative decision table. The regular method of relations and the reduction algorithm of attributes are studied. The reduced relations are presented by the multi-represent-value method and its algorithm is offered. The whole knowledge acquisition process has high degree of automation and the extracted knowledge is true and reliable.

Many parallel computers use Tori interconnection networks. Machines from Cray, HP and IBM, among others, exploit these topologies. In order to maintain full network symmetry, 2D and 3D Tori must have the same number of nodes (k) per dimension resulting in square or cubic topologies. Nevertheless, for practical reasons, computer engineers have designed and built 2D and 3D Tori having a different number of nodes per dimension. These mixed-radix topologies are not edge-symmetric which translates into poor performance provoked by an unbalanced use of the network links. In this paper, we propose and analyze twisted 2D and 3D Tori which remove the network bottlenecks present in mixed-radix standard Tori. These new topologies recover edge-symmetry and, consequently, balance the utilization of their links. We describe the distance-related parameters of these twisted networks and use simulation to asses their performance under synthetic loads. The obtained results show noticeable and consistent performance gains. In addition, we propose scalable and practicable packet routing and folding techniques for these interconnection subsystems. The complexity of the resulting architectural solutions is similar to the one exhibited by traditional routing and folding mechanisms employed in standard Tori. This fact together with the performance improvements obtained could justify the use of these twisted topologies in the future.

Public spaces are changing from being ungoverned places for interaction to be more formalized, controlled, less interactive, and designed places aimed at fulfilling a purpose. Simultaneously, new personal mobile technology aims at providing private individual spaces in the public domain. In this paper we explore the implications of interacting in public space and how technology can be rethought to not only act as personal devices, but be the tool to reclaim the right and possibility to interact in public spaces. We introduce information exchange, social support and regulation as three central aspects for reclaiming public space. The PhotoSwapper application is presented as an example of a system designed to integrate pervasive technology in a public setting. The system is strongly inspired by the activities at a traditional market place. Based on the design of the application we discuss four design challenges when designing for public interaction. Aiming at filtering irrelevant web services quickly and efficiently from a large collection, a kind of signature file, called Bit-Sliced Bloom-Filtered Signature (BBS). It is used as the index structure for web services discovery and composition. In addition, a successful business interaction of web services is checked with propositional logic statements. Furthermore, a reasonable solution to construct a Service Dependency Graph (SDG) to capture the input/output dependencies among the web services is also proposed. Compared with the inverted index approach, the BBS approach is quicker and more efficient based on experiments.

The diversity of representations and the complexity of capturing and communicating the design process and its rationale present a challenge to architects. This paper proposes a multimodal virtual reality environment (MVE) aimed at utilizing the inherent advantages of distinct media, as opposed to a stand-alone virtual reality environment. Virtual reality is seen here as one of the tools in the larger milieu of interactive multimedia tools available to architects. The theoretical framework underlying its development explores the role of digital tools in the design process, their adaptability to existing workflow and issues of representation and perception, especially how design ideas are represented, evaluated and manipulated in the mind. The development of MVE followed a cycle of design, usability studies by a focus group and redesign.
