This study presents a new heuristic algorithm for attribute reduction (reduct) selection in the Rough Set Theory (RST) applications, called extended RST. This algorithm is able to derive the rules and identify the most significant features simultaneously, which is unique and useful in solving quality control problems in manufacturing. The developed algorithm is applied to an industrial case study involving the quality control of Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). The rules derived from the data set provide an indication of how to study this problem further and create a path for effective further investigation.

This paper proposes a real-time bioinspired visual encoding system for multielectrodes’ stimulation of the visual cortex supported on Field Programmable Logic. This system includes the spatio-temporal preprocessing stage and the generation of varying in time spike patterns to stimulate an array of microelectrodes and can be applied to build a portable visual neuroprosthesis. It only requires a small amount of hardware which is achieved by taking advantage of the high operating frequency of the FPGAs to share circuits in time. Experimental results show that with the proposed architecture a real-time visual encoding system can be implemented in FPGAs with modest capacity. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

In this work we compare some of the freely available parallel Toolboxes for Matlab, which differ in purpose and implementation details: while DP-Toolbox and MultiMatlab offer a higher-level parallel environment, the goals of PVMTB and MPITB, developed by us [7], are to closely adhere to the PVM system and MPI standard, respectively. DP-Toolbox is also based on PVM, and MultiMatlab on MPI. These Toolboxes allow the user to build a parallel application under the rapid-prototyping Matlab environment. The differences between them are illustrated by means of a performance test and a simple case study frequently found in the literature. Thus, depending on the preferred message-passing software and the performance requirements of the application, the user can either choose a higher-level Toolbox and benefit from easier coding, or directly interface the message-passing routines and benefit from greater control and performance. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

This work presents an MLP-like feed-forward network with two-dimensional layers partially connected and other features, such as configurable activation functions and batched backpropagation with different smoothing-momentum alternatives. We name this model eXtended Multi-Layer Perceptron (XMLP) because it extends the connectivity of the MLP. Here we describe its architecture, the various activation functions that it can use, its learning algorithm, and the possible use of discretization intended for hardware implementation. We also show a configurable graphic tool developed to train and simulate any MLP-like network (totally or partially connected). Finally, we present some results on speech recognition in order to compare total and partial connectivity, as well as continuous and discrete operation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

In this work we present several hardware implementations of a standard multi-layer perceptron and a modified version called extended multilayer perceptron. The implementations have been developed and tested onto a FPGA prototyping board. The designs have been defined using a high level hardware description language, which enables the study of different implementation versions with diverse parallelism levels. The test bed application addressed is speech recognition. The contribution presented in this paper can be seen as a low cost portable system, which can be easily modified. We include a short study of the implementation costs (silicon area), speed and required computational resources. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

Denial of Service (DoS) attacks have become, in today's Internet, one of the most difficult issues to address. In the DoS attacks, the attackers consume all of the computing or communication resources that are needed for providing the services. TCP has drawbacks in its connection establishment for possible DoS attacks. TCP maintains the state of each partly established connection in its fixed size queue until it is fully established and accepted by the application. The attackers can make the queue full by sending connection requests very much and not completing the connection establishment steps for those requests. In this paper, we have designed and implemented an extended TCP for preventing the DoS attacks. In the extended TCP, the state of each partly established connection is not maintained in the queue. We have modified the 3-way handshake procedure of TCP, and implemented the extended TCP in Xinu operating system. © 2003 7th Korea-Russia Intl Sym on Science.

Field tests demonstrated the value of enhancements that enable an advanced nonintrusive load monitoring system to tackle complex monitoring environments. Nonintrusive load monitoring (NILM) can determine the operating schedule of electrical loads in a target system from measurements made at a centralized location, such as the electric utility service entry. In contrast to other systems, NILM reduces sensor costs by using relatively few sensors.

We present an independent component analysis (ICA) algorithm based on geometric considerations [10] [11] to decompose a linear mixture of more sources than sensor signals. Bofill and Zibulevsky [2] recently proposed a two-step approach for the separation: first learn the mixing matrix, then recover the sources using a maximum-likelihood approach. We present an efficient method for the matrix-recovery step mimicking the standard geometric algorithm thus generalizing Bofill and Zibulevsky's method. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

In this paper, we present a novel approach to achieve global adaptation in neuro-fuzzy controllers. The adaptation process is achieved by means of two auxiliary systems: The first one is responsible for adapting the consequents of the main controller's rules with the target of minimizing the error arising at the plant output. The second auxiliary system compiles real input/output data obtained from the plant, which are then used in real time taking into account, not the current state of the plant but rather the global identification performed. Simulation results show that this approach leads to an enhanced control policy avoiding overfitting. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

Monitoring edge-to-edge traffic aggregates in differentiated services networks

Differentiated Services (DiffServ), which are currently being standardized in the IETF DiffServ working group, is a solution that can provide different qualities of service to different network users. DiffServ aggregates network packets at edge routers and forwards the aggregated packets to core routers with different priorities. In this paper, we propose methods using the SNMP framework for monitoring edge-to-edge traffic aggregates in a DiffServ domain, which consists of a set of DiffServ-enabled routers. In order to manage each DiffServ router, we have analyzed the DiffServ MIB and instrumented it in the router. Further, we propose monitoring behaviors of edge-to-edge traffic aggregates by combining topology and performance information from MIB II and DiffServ MIB. Construction procedures and graphical representation of the edge-to-edge traffic aggregates are explained in detail. We also extend our efforts to implement a DiffServ domain monitoring system that monitors a set of DiffServ-enabled routers and traffic aggregates between every edge router pair. We believe that the proposed monitoring methods can serve as useful building blocks for managing DiffServ networks. © 2001 Plenum Publishing Corporation.
