The urban parking spaces for loading/unloading are typically over-occupied, which shifts delivery operations to traffic lanes and pavements, increases traffic, generates noise, and causes pollution. We present a data analytics based routing optimization that improves the circulation of vehicles and utilization of parking spaces. We formalize this new problem and develop a novel multivehicle route planner that avoids congestions at loading/unloading areas and minimizes the total duration. We present the developed tool with an illustration and analysis for the urban freight in the city of Barcelona, which monitors tens of thousands of deliveries every day. Our system includes an effective evaluation of candidate routes by considering the waiting times and further delays of other deliverers as a first class citizen in the optimization. A two-layer local search is proposed with a greedy randomized adaptive method for variable neighborhood search. Our approach is applied and validated over data collected across Barcelona's urban freight transport network, which contains 3,704,034 parking activities. Our solution is shown to significantly improve the use of available parking spaces and the circulation of vehicles, as evidenced by the results. The analysis also provides useful insights on how to manage delivery routes and parking spaces for sustainable urban freight transport and city logistics.

Accurate brain tissue segmentation in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has attracted the attention of medical doctors and researchers since variations in tissue volume help in diagnosing and monitoring neurological diseases. Several proposals have been designed throughout the years comprising conventional machine learning strategies as well as convolutional neural networks (CNN) approaches. In particular, in this paper, we analyse a sub-group of deep learning methods producing dense predictions. This branch, referred in the literature as Fully CNN (FCNN), is of interest as these architectures can process an input volume in less time than CNNs and local spatial dependencies may be encoded since several voxels are classified at once. Our study focuses on understanding architectural strengths and weaknesses of literature-like approaches. Hence, we implement eight FCNN architectures inspired by robust state-of-the-art methods on brain segmentation related tasks. We evaluate them using the IBSR18, MICCAI2012 and iSeg2017 datasets as they contain infant and adult data and exhibit varied voxel spacing, image quality, number of scans and available imaging modalities. The discussion is driven in three directions: comparison between 2D and 3D approaches, the importance of multiple modalities and overlapping as a sampling strategy for training and testing models. Modeling and Simulation (M&S) is one of the most multifaceted topics present today in both industry and academia. However, we are involved in a new M&S paradigm. Systems are becoming more complex and new simulation needs arise and have to be studied. As a consequence, the way in which we perform M&S must be adapted, providing new ideas and tools. In this paper, we propose a rule-based constraints evaluator, which facilitate the validation and verification of complex models in a transparent manner. For this, constraints are defined. The constraints definition process is completely independent of the model development process because (a) the set of constraints is defined once the model has been developed, and (b) constraints are validated at simulation time. The proposed Constraint M&S architecture has been built using the Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) formalism and has been tested on a validated data center simulation model.

HyperSurfaces are a merge of structurally reconfigurable metasurfaces whose electromagnetic properties can be changed via a software interface, using an embedded miniaturized network of controllers, thus enabling novel capabilities in wireless communications. Resource constraints associated with the development of a hardware testbed of this breakthrough technology necessitate network controller architectures different from traditional regular Network-on-Chip architectures. The Manhattan-like topology chosen to realize the controller network in the testbed under development is irregular, with restricted local path selection options, operating in an asynchronous fashion. These characteristics render traditional fault-tolerant routing mechanisms inadequate. In this paper, we present work in progress towards the development of fault-tolerant routing mechanisms for the chosen architecture. We present two XY-based approaches which have been developed aiming to offer reliable data delivery in the presence of faults. The first approach aims to avoid loops while the second one attempts to maximize the success delivery probabilities. Three-dimensional Network-on-Chip systems are becoming popular because of reduced communication delay, heterogeneous integration of different technologies in a single chip, high yield, reduced latency, and less consumption of interconnect power. However, the addition of functional units in the Z-direction has resulted in higher on-chip temperature and appearance of hot spots on the die. Liquid channel cooling has emerged as an efficient and scalable solution for 3-D NoC. This paper proposed a placement strategy of liquid micro-channels in the chip using the genetic algorithm. The proposed liquid cooling approach is independent of any topology. By performing an extensive set of experiments, the result shows a substantial decrease in peak on-chip temperature. © 2017 Society for Modeling & Simulation International (SCS).

Astrophysical neutrinos may be produced during the coalescence of compact objects, in particular those involving neutron stars. Such mergers have been identified through gravitational wave detections by the LIGO and Virgo collaborations and reported in published catalogs. The ANTARES and KM3NeT deep-sea neutrino telescopes are sensitive to neutrino interactions in a wide range of energies, from MeV to PeV. The under-construction KM3NeT telescope covers this energy range with two detectors: ORCA for neutrinos below the TeV and ARCA for TeV–PeV, extending the capabilities of the now-decommissioned ANTARES telescope. This contribution presents the search for neutrinos in time and space correlation with the gravitational wave signals reported during the Third Observing Run of LIGO/Virgo. The ANTARES analysis uses track-like and shower-like events originating from high-energy neutrino interactions. It focuses on a ±500-second time window centered on the time of the merger given by the gravitational wave signal. Two KM3NeT studies are carried out using the data from the partial KM3NeT/ORCA detector: a search for upgoing tracks induced by GeV-TeV neutrinos in the same window as above;and a search for a MeV neutrino signal in a shorter 2-second time window. The results are provided in terms of upper limits on the incoming neutrino flux in the various energy ranges and the total isotropic energies emitted in neutrinos. High-energy observations are also stacked to probe the typical neutrino emission from different populations of mergers. Synchronization has become a main concern in communication and control systems during the last years. Although there are several standard mechanisms to accomplish timing requirements, development and improvement of high synchronization technologies is required to obtain better performance and quality of service. In this context, the enhanced version of IEEE 1588v2 synchronization protocol, known as White Rabbit (WR), was created to provide sub-nanosecond accuracy and a precision of few picoseconds over Ethernet optical fiber networks. However, the deployment on different distribution scenarios like Telecoms, Smart Grids or Finances makes mandatory to research the flexibility and the adaptability of this synchronization protocol. According to industry requirements, some of the future investigation lines in this field are bandwidth management and wireless deployment, maintaining the stability and the accuracy [1]. Both tasks highly depend on the system carrier-frequency, which impacts on the bandwidth and makes this solution suitable for a target scenario. In this contribution we modify the Ethernet physical layer to develop a fully programmable Ethernet reference carrier frequency. After that, we evaluate the influence of the frequency range and how it affects the clock synchronization accuracy results, obtaining the jitter results for the WR-core under different system frequencies. The study is developed on the Light Embedded Node (WR-LEN). Its firmware has been modified according to the clocking circuitry of these boards and it allows to test the WR performance over a large range of frequencies, which could be used in future applications.

This paper reports on a Delphi-like study about the Italian banking IT sector's greatest concerns. A new research framework was developed to pursue this vertical study: domain and country specific, using a Mixed Methods approach. Data collection was drawn in four phases starting with a high level randomly stratified panel of 13 senior managers and then a target-panel of 124 carefully selected and well-informed domain experts. We have identified and dealt with 15 concerns about the present situation, they were discussed in a framework inspired by the ISO 25010 standard. After having mapped the concerns within the ISO standard, we identified the emergence of a new meta quality dimension which impacts both on software quality and architectural description. Our inductive outcome lets this meta dimension emerge connecting both ISO 25010 and ISO 42010 standards.
