Two-dimensional alphabetic trees have many applications in a wide variety of diverse fields. Although, a relatively fast algorithm that finds an approximate optimal alphabetic tree (OAT) does exist, yet, the only way to find the exact one is to use dynamic programming. In dynamic programming the (OAT) is found by simply examining all nodes in the two dimensional array of weights as possible roots (cuts) at each level of the tree and finding the one with minimal cost. In this paper, we introduce the concept of "goodness" for each cut to limit the search for an optimal solution. The measure of goodness is a value we call the expense of the cut, only cuts with expense less than a given limit L are considered good cuts. Then at each level of the tree, only good cuts are tested as possible candidates for an optimal solution.

This paper focuses on the design of signaling and mobility control protocols for wireless ATM (W-ATM) systems based on the intelligent network (IN) concepts. The employed signaling protocol architecture aims for private W-ATM networks to access the core B-ISDN/ATM infrastructure. The proposed design intents to minimize the changes required to the wired ATM network signaling to accommodate mobility features, by taking advantage of the well-developed capability sets. A signaling performance evaluation is carried out to demonstrate the impact of the proposed signaling architecture onto various performance measures and to identify the behavior of the system under various signaling loads in order to reveal the limits of the signaling system stability. © 1998 IEEE.

We consider the problem of answering datalog queries using materialized views. More specifically, queries are rewritten to refer to views instead of the base relations over which the queries were originally written. Much work has been done on program rewriting that produces an equivalent query. In the context of information integration, though, the importance of using views to infer as many answers as possible has been pointed out. Formally, the problem is: Given a datalog program P is there a datalog program Pv which uses only views as EDB predicates and (i) produces a subset of the answers that P produces and (ii) any other program P’v over the views with property (i) is contained in Pv? In this paper we investigate the problem in the case of disjunctive view definitions. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

In the paper, we describe our approach and experience with teaching fundamentals of functional programming by program schemata construction and explanation. Program schemata for processing of lists are presented. Our approach reflects our ultimate goal - to support the learning process. As the main result, we report on experiments that allow to judge quite favourably the approach to teaching functional (Lisp) programming when the student learns a set of program schemata and how to apply them.

We propose an extension of the entity-attribute-value (EAV) model to express both data and meta-data in a uniform format. The extension includes three basic modeling constructs, entities, attributes and relationships and three meta-level modeling constructs, meta-entities, meta-attributes, and domain values. The meta-level modeling constructs are proposed to express domain-specific knowledge as well as application-independent facts. We use this model as a common data model with which mappings between related concepts/objects existing in multiple heterogeneous databases can be described. We include a number of examples illustrating both the basic and meta-level modeling constructs. © 13th International Conference on computers and Their Applications 1998, CATA 1998. This document1 contains definitions of a wide range of concepts specific to and widely used within temporal databases. In addition to providing definitions, the document also includes explanations of concepts as well as discussions of the adopted names. The consensus effort that lead to this glossary was initiated in Early 1992. Earlier versions appeared in SIGMOD Record in September 1992 and March 1994. The present glossary subsumes all the previous documents. The glossary meets the need for creating a higher degree of consensus on the definition and naming of temporal database concepts. Two sets of criteria are included. First, all included concepts were required to satisfy four relevance criteria, and, second, the naming of the concepts was resolved using a set of evaluation criteria. The concepts are grouped into three categories: concepts of general database interest, of temporal database interest, and of specialized interest. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

In this paper, XBONE, a hybrid medical expert system that supports diagnosis of bone diseases is presented. Diagnosis is based on various patient data and is performed in two stages. In the early stage, diagnosis is based on demographic and clinical data of the patient, whereas in the late stage it is mainly based on nuclear medicine image data. Knowledge is represented via an integrated formalism that combines production rules and the Adaline artificial neural unit. Each condition of a rule is assigned a number, called its significance factor, representing its significance in drawing the conclusion of the rule. This results in better representation, reduction of the knowledge base size and gives the system learning capabilities. © 1997, The authors.

Proposes a powerful model, called MITOS (Model for Intelligent Three-dimensional Object Support) for the intelligent support of spatial data consisting of irregular 3D objects and their interrelations. The core novelty of the proposed data model lies in its delicate way of representing the (complicated) world of 3D objects in order to reduce its complexity. MITOS achieves this by discretizing the space, using mostly topological notions and finite sets, and by recalling geometry only when needed. On the other hand, MITOS's objects are effectively handled by the MITOS language, which is an integration of an object-oriented programming language and a logic-based one.
