It is common in client/server architectures for components to have SQL statements embedded in their source code. Components submit queries to relational databases using such standards as Universal Data Access (UDA) and Open Database Connectivity (ODBC). The API that implements these standards is complex and requires the embedding of SQL statements in the language that is used to write the components. Such programming practices are widespread and result in increased complexity in maintaining systems. We propose an approach that eliminates the embedding of SQL in programming languages, thereby enabling the automation of important software maintenance tasks.

Two of the fundamental issues in message passing between mobile agents are tracking the migration of the target agent and delivering messages to it. In order to provide reliable message delivery, protocols are needed to overcome message loss caused by asynchronous operations of agent migration and message forwarding. In this paper, two message forwarding approaches, namely push and pull, are explored to design adaptive and reliable message delivery protocols. The pros and cons of these two approaches are evaluated, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The comparative performance evaluation is in terms of network traffic and delay in message processing. We also propose improvements to the pull approach to reduce network traffic and the message delay. We conclude that with different communication and migration patterns and requirements of real-time message processing, specific applications can select different message delivery approaches to achieve the desired level of performance and flexibility. © 2002 IEEE.

Modern enterprises are irreversibly dependent on large-scale, adaptive, component-based information systems whose complexity frequently exceeds current engineering capabilities for intellectual control, resulting in persistent difficulties in system development, management, and evolution. We propose an innovative framework of engineering representation and reasoning methods for developing these complex systems: the flow-service-quality (FSQ) framework. In dynamic network information systems with constantly varying function and usage, workflows and their corresponding traces of system services act as stable foundations for functional and non functional (quality attribute) specification, design, and operational control. Our objective is to provide theoretical foundations, language representations, and rigorous yet practical unified engineering methods to represent and reason about system flows as essential artifacts of system specification, design, and operation. © 2002 IEEE.

The application of Hough Transform (HT) has been limited to small-size images for a long time. For large-size images, the peak detection and the line verification become much more time-consuming. Many HT-based line detection methods are not able to detect line width. This paper proposes a new approach for detecting line segments using HT, which makes HT applicable to large-size images, especially for those applications whose line width is critical. Our approach applies a boundary recorder to eliminate redundant analyses, and employs an image-analysis-based line-verification method to overcome the difficulty of using a threshold to distinguish short lines from noise. It avoids the overlapping lines by removing the pixels of detected line segments, which is more robust than only clearing the N×N neighborhood. This approach could be easily extended to improved HT methods that perform the global accumulation. The experimental result shows that this approach is very time-efficient for large-size images. © 2002 IEEE.

Formal methods, especially model checking, are an indispensable part of the software engineering process. With large software systems currently beyond the range of fully automatic verification, however, a combination of decomposition and abstraction techniques is needed. To model check components of a system, a standard approach is to close the component with an abstraction of its environment. To make it useful in practice, the closing of the component should be automatic, both for data and for control abstraction. Specifically for model checking asynchronous open systems, external input queues should be removed, as they are a potential source of a combinatorial state explosion. In this paper we close a component synchronously by embedding the external environment directly into the system to avoid the external queues, while for the data, we use a two-valued abstraction, namely data influenced from the outside or not. This gives a more precise analysis than that investigated by Ioustinova et al. (2002). To further combat the state explosion problem, we combine this data abstraction with a static analysis to remove superfluous code fragments. The static analysis we use is reminiscent of that presented by Ioustinova et al., but we use a combination of a may and a must-analysis instead of a may-analysis.

This paper discusses the development of software engineering class projects that have produced tools which have been used to enrich the educational experience of engineering students, the end users of the software. The projects have involved the creation, maintenance and evolution of software that helps the students determine their major, understand their learning style, develop a semester-by-semester plan of study, and formulate a class schedule each semester. The evolution of the structure of the software engineering project process is first presented. Having "internal" clients (i.e. those who are employees of the university) for projects that directly benefit engineering students is then compared to having "external" clients. The benefits gained by all stakeholders through these projects and data supporting the satisfaction levels of those stakeholders is presented. Finally, there is a discussion of funded research projects that have been spun off from of these projects, and the plans for the further educational software development through these grants.

A storage area network (SAN) is a high-speed special-purpose network (or subnetwork) that interconnects different kinds of data storage devices with associated data servers on behalf of a larger network of users. In SAN, computers service local file requests directly from shared storage devices. Direct device access eliminates the server machines as bottlenecks to performance and availability. Communication is unnecessary between computers, since each machine views the storage as being locally attached. SAN provides us to very large physical storage up to 64-bit address space, but traditional file systems can't adapt to the file system for SAN because they have the limitation of scalability. In this paper we propose a new mechanism for file system using dynamic bitmap assignment. While traditional file systems rely on a fixed bitmap structures for metadata such as super block, inode, and directory entries, the proposed file system allocates bitmap and allocation area depend on file system features. Our approaches give a solution of the problem that the utilization of the file system depends on the file size in the traditional file systems. We show that the dynamic bitmap mechanism this improves the efficiency of disk usage in file system when compared to the conventional file systems.

Currently, a large gap exists between the number of open software engineering positions and the number of qualified software engineers to fill those positions. The Industry/University (I/U) subgroup of the Working Group on software engineering Education and Training (WGSEET) is investigating active collaborations between companies and universities in which non-software professionals and practitioners without formal software education are reeducated to become software engineers. This paper describes the current status of work performed by the I/U subgroup in the investigation of reeducation collaborations. It is our goal to identify the common characteristics of successful collaborations in order to provide guidance to universities and companies when constructing a collaborative program, as well as to promote future collaborations. In this paper, we report on the current activity of the I/U subgroup, describe the features of successful collaborations identified so far in our research, and provide some conclusions as to the usefulness of such collaborations. © 2002, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

A software control system for an autonomous mobile robot must be capable of performing many complex processing tasks in real time. Such tasks may include localising within the environment, recognising objects or safely avoiding static and dynamic obstacles. The focus for our team this year was to build a solid structural base, to be used in future RoboCup competitions. This led us to concentrate on development of effective reusable components such as a robust vision system. The RoboMutts team was a joint venture between the University of Melbourne and RMIT University. This paper focuses on the parts of the system developed at the University of Melbourne.

The paper presents a novel approach to the analysis of typed logic programs. We assume regular type descriptions of logic program variables provided by regular tree grammars. Types are used to identify components of terms which can be equated during the programs execution. This information is reflected in form of set constraints in the generic abstract domain called Type(X). The domain allows for abstract compilation of typed logic programs into set logic programs. We demonstrate how the analyzers of groundness and sharing of typed logic programs are obtained by applying the existing (untyped) techniques based on Pos and Sharing to set logic programs. The corresponding analyses in Type(Pos) and Type(Sharing) are more precise than those in Pos and Sharing. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.
