Advances in compiler technology have recently led to the introduction of a new architectural paradigm, called the Very Long Instruction Word (VLIW) architecture. The Multijlow TRACE series of processors is the jirst commercial line of processors wv"th this architecture. Information on the performance of the TRACE is of sigtujicant value to the design of all processors intended to exploit jine-grain parallelism. This paper presents results concerning the performance and resource utilization of the TRACE 14/300 on a set of 11 common scienti~c programs written in both C and FORTRAN. Several characteristics of the application, architecture, implementation, and compiler that contribute to the observed results are identified. Performance of the TRACE 14/300 is also measured on several standard benchmarks, including the SPEC benchmark suite. Comparisons are made with results from other processors. The architectural effectiveness of the TRACE 141300 appears to be better than most existing RISC workstations and is comparable to the best current superscalar workstations. © 1991 ACM.

This paper compares the finitary three-valued logic LPF and the infinitary two-valued logic MPLω, the logics underlying VDM SL and COLD-K. These logics reflect different approaches to reasoning about partial functions and bringing recursive function definitions into proofs. The purpose of the comparison is to acquire insight into the relationship between these approaches. A natural translation from LPF to MPLω is given. It is shown that what can be proved remains the same after translation, in case strictness axioms are added to LPF or removed from MPLω. The translation from LPF to MPLω is extended to recursive function definitions and this translation is next used to justify some ways of bringing the definitions of partial functions into proofs using LPF. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1991.

A description is given of the optimization methodology applied by the PRECISE computer program for the synthesis of analog ASICs. The application of simulation and optimization technology allows engineers to determine easily and automatically the element values and geometries needed to reach desired or measured analog circuit performance. The integration of both technologies to determine the optimum design parameters necessary to reach circuit objectives specified by the designer is described. Optimization in AC, DC, and transient domains can occur simultaneously to account for the interdependencies of the circuit element value in those domains. In addition, the optimization process can take place in discrete and constrained design parameter space so that the technological limits are accounted for and the optimal drawn lengths and widths are manufacturable. The optimization approach can be a powerful tool for the design of analog ASICs.< >

Whereas existing Prolog systems are very effective at handling small knowledge bases, they are not very efficient at and often incapable of handling large sets of clauses. Large knowledge bases which may comprise millions of clauses and are shared by a number of users, may need to reside in secondary memory. In such cases exhaustive search is inordinately slow. Various approaches have been put forward for handling the problem, most of which involve coupled systems (loosely or tightly coupled). A Prolog data/knowledge based system which provides an integrated solution to the problem is being developed. An essential element in this system is the CLAuse Retrieval Engine, CLARE, which is a special purpose hardware engine designed to perform selective retrieval of data from disk in order to identify all potential clauses which will be required for full unification during a query. The engine consists of two separate hardware components, which together form a two-stage filtering configuration. This paper concentrates on the second stage filter which is concerned with partial test unification.

The conference consisted of 6 keynote talks, 11 general tracks and 29 invited s- sions and workshops, on the applications and theory of intelligent systems and related areas. The distinguished keynote speakers were Christopher Bishop, UK, Nikola - sabov, New Zealand, Saeid Nahavandi, Australia, Tetsuo Sawaragi, Japan, Yuzuru Tanaka, Japan and Roger Whitaker, UK. Over 240 oral and poster presentations provided excellent opportunities for the presentation of interesting new research results and discussion about them, leading to knowledge transfer and generation of new ideas. This open access book presents the outcomes of the “Design for Future – Managed software Evolution” priority program 1593, which was launched by the German Research Foundation (“Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)”) to develop new approaches to software engineering with a specific focus on long-lived software systems. The different lifecycles of software and hardware platforms lead to interoperability problems in such systems. Instead of separating the development, adaptation and evolution of software and its platforms, as well as aspects like operation, monitoring and maintenance, they should all be integrated into one overarching process.;Accordingly, the book is split into three major parts, the first of which includes an introduction to the nature of software evolution, followed by an overview of the specific challenges and a general introduction to the case studies used in the project. Some of the most challenging problems in science and engineering are being addressed by the integration of computation and science, a research ?eld known as computational science. Computational science plays a vital role in fundamental advances in biology, physics, chemistry, astronomy, and a host of other disciplines. This is through the coordination of computation, data management, access to instrumentation, knowledge synthesis, and the use of new devices. It has an impact on researchers and practitioners in the sciences and beyond. The sheer size of many challenges in computational science dictates the use of supercomputing, parallel and distri- ted processing, grid-based processing, advanced visualization and sophisticated algorithms. At the dawn of the 21st century the series of International Conferences on Computational Science (ICCS) was initiated with a ?rst meeting in May 2001 in San Francisco. The success of that meeting motivated the organization of the - cond meeting held in Amsterdam April 21–24, 2002, where over 500 participants pushed the research ?eld further. The International Conference on Computational Science 2003 (ICCS 2003) is the follow-up to these earlier conferences.
