BSPC: A novel bitmap-based scalable parallel classifier

Decision trees have been found very effective for classification especially in data mining. Although classification is a well studied problem, most of the current classification algorithms need an in-memory data structure to achieve efficiency. This limits their suitability for mining over large databases. In this paper, a novel Bitmap-based Scalable Parallel Classifier (BSPC) is presented. It removes all the memory requirements needed by existing algorithms. Also, since scalability is a key requirement for any data mining algorithm, it is considered and achieved in the design of BSPC. Additionally, the suggested algorithm has been designed to be easily parallelized, allowing many processors to work together to build a single consistent model. Performance analysis demonstrates that the BSPC outperforms other state of the art algorithms. The superiority of the novel algorithm is demonstrated through the classification of Wisconsin breast cancer dataset. © Faculty of Engineering Alexandria University.

Typical autonomous driving systems are a combination of machine learning algorithms (often involving neural networks) and classical feedback controllers. Whilst significant progress has been made in recent years on the neural network side of these systems, only limited progress has been made on the feedback controller side. Often, the feedback control gains are simply passed from paper to paper with little re-tuning taking place, even though the changes to the neural networks can alter the vehicle's closed loop dynamics. The aim of this paper is to highlight the limitations of this approach; it is shown that re-tuning the feedback controller can be a simple way to improve autonomous driving performance. To demonstrate this, the PID gains of the longitudinal controller in the TCP autonomous vehicle algorithm are tuned. This causes the driving score in CARLA to increase from 73.21 to 77.38, with the results averaged over 16 driving scenarios. Moreover, it was observed that the performance benefits were most apparent during challenging driving scenarios, such as during rain or night time, as the tuned controller led to a more assertive driving style. These results demonstrate the value of developing both the neural network and feedback control policies of autonomous driving systems simultaneously, as this can be a simple and methodical way to improve autonomous driving system performance and robustness.

Research of discrete event systems is strongly motivated by applications in flex ible manufacturing, in traffic control and in concurrent and real-time software verification and design, just to mention a few important areas. Discrete event system theory is a promising and dynamically developing area of both control theory and computer science. Discrete event systems are systems with non-numerically-valued states, inputs, and outputs. The approaches to the modelling and control of these systems can be roughly divided into two groups. The first group is concerned with the automatic design of controllers from formal specifications of logical requirements. This re search owes much to the pioneering work of P.J. Ramadge and W.M. Wonham at the beginning of the eighties. The second group deals with the analysis and op timization of system throughput, waiting time, and other performance measures for discrete event systems. The present book contains selected papers presented at the Joint Workshop on Discrete Event Systems (WODES'92) held in Prague, Czechoslovakia, on Au gust 26-28, 1992 and organized by the Institute of Information Theory and Au tomation of the Czechoslovak Academy of sciences, Prague, Czechoslovakia, by the automatic control Laboratory of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) , Zurich, Switzerland, and by the Department of Computing science of the University of Groningen, Groningen, the Netherlands.

Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) are of great importance in identifying the genetic variants associated with traits/diseases. Due to the high number of candidate SNPs some filtering techniques are necessary to be applied. The aim of the study was to develop the comprehensive approach allowing for detailed analysis of both SNP-gene and SNP-miRNA-gene relations. We elaborated and optimized the novel signal analysis pipeline improving significantly the results of the analysis on genotype-phenotype interplay. Direct links between genotype results and gene expression levels were enriched by detailed analysis of SNP-miRNA-gene interactions at both mature miRNA structure/seed region and target binding site level. The proposed technique was applied to the data on lymphocyte radiation response and increased by almost 100% number of potential functional SNPs.

This paper proposes a methodology of combining eigenstructure assignment, feedforward gain with sliding mode control technique to realize an enhanced robust pitch pointing flight control system. This control system can track step input commands without error and it turns out to be consistently robust against parameter variations and external disturbances. The design methodology is illustrated by application to an AFTI/F-16 aircraft.

Object control requires the calculation of a regulator. One of the most effective methods for calculating the regulator is the method of numerical optimization of the regulator. This paper discusses the solution of the problem of controlling a linear object of the sixth order, the parameters of which are such that this high order significantly and negatively affects the possibilities of successfully managing this object. Using the traditional approach to the design problem of the controller (regulator) allows us to formally solve the problem;however, the result of this solution is not satisfactory. The use of additional derivation does not give any noticeable improvement. A solution to this problem is proposed by using pseudo-local feedback, moreover, this connection is supposedly most effective if it covers one of two identical links in the object model. This allows for a smoother attenuation of the frequency response of the object in the region where the action of these two links begins to affect. For pseudo-local communication, an additional PID controller is used, the coefficients of which are also determined by the method of numerical optimization. The optimization result allows us to conclude that the presence of an integral element in this controller is optional. The calculation result of such a composite controller meets the most stringent requirements for the quality of control, since in such a system the speed is increased at least twice, the oscillations, which were about 10% in amplitude, are completely eliminated, the robustness of the system is ensured, which is verified by changing all the controller coefficients by 5% up and down, and also by changing the time constant of the element of the pseudolocal loop by 10% up and down, changes in the transition process of the system in this case remain are acceptable. © 2019 IEEE.

Web Laboratories (WebLabs) are essential resources for engineering education. Within this type of laboratory, a new Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) package design model is shown in this work. The proposed model is based on a set of resources that form a complete educational structure; taking into account the sequencing and navigation among the elements that compose it. In addition, it can be uploaded to a Learning Management System (LMS), offering to the students an effective tool to work with web labs. The package is structured in 4 sections or pages: Introduction, Theory, Virtual/Remote Laboratory (VRL) and Assessment; where the last performs an automated verification of the work done by the learner. In this way, one of the advantage of this methodology is that the instant results of the assessments, performed by the SCORM package, is stored in the inner LMS. Some WebLabs performing this methodology are being developed in the University of Jaén. In this work, an example is developed: "Modelling of Dynamic System: DC Motor". This WebLab is used in the Industrial Automation course that is included in several Industrial Engineering degrees.

The proliferation of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) in various applications has necessitated the exploration of network architectures that can ensure efficient, scalable, and reliable communication. This study presents a comparative performance evaluation of traditional networking paradigms and Software-Defined Networking (SDN)-based architectures within WSN. Utilizing the Floodlight SDN controller and Mininet-WiFi emulator, we conducted a series of experiments across three different network topologies, varying the number of hosts and access points. The performance metrics focused on are average latency, packet loss percentage, and throughput. The results demonstrate a considerable improvement in all measured parameters under the SDN-based environment compared to the traditional setup. Specifically, SDN environments consistently showcased lower latency, minimal packet loss, and higher throughput, with the most notable difference observed in smaller network configurations. The findings suggest that SDN, with its centralized control plane, can significantly enhance the performance of WSNs, particularly in scenarios demanding rapid scalability and dynamic traffic management. This study underscores the potential of SDN architectures in optimizing WSN operations and lays the groundwork for future research in this domain. © 2024, Politechnica University of Bucharest. In this paper, a hierarchical multirate control scheme for nonlinear discrete-time systems is proposed, composed of a robust model predictive controller (MPC) and a multirate integral sliding mode (MISM) controller. In particular, the MISM controller acts at a faster sampling time than the MPC controller, and reduces the effect of model uncertainties and external disturbances, in order to obtain, at the next sampling instant of the MPC controller, a value of the system state that is as close as possible to the nominal one. To obtain this result, the control variable is composed of two parts: one generated by the MPC controller, and the other by the MISM controller. The a-priori reduction of the disturbance terms turns out to be very useful in order to improve the convergence properties of the MPC controller. © 2010 IFAC.
