The increasing demands of data computation and storage for cloud-based services motivate the development and deployment of large-scale data centers (DCs). The energy demand of these devices is rising rapidly and becoming a noticeable challenge for current power networks. The smart grid (SG) is deemed as the future power system paradigm enabling more affordable and sustainable energy supply, which can effectively relieve the load pressure from DCs. Moreover, with growing concerns regarding harmful emissions due to combustion of fossil fuels, the exploitation of renewable energy sources (RES) has attracted extensive attention, which can benefit SGs and DCs, as well as society at large. However, the geo-distributed property of DCs and SGs and the uncertain nature of RES production pose severe challenges to the optimal management of computation and energy resources in such a tripartite coupling system. Focusing on these issues, a joint energy and computation workload management framework is proposed for enabling a sustainable DC paradigm with distributed RES. Specifically, a three-layer game is formulated to model the iterations among entities including the energy market, data center operators (DCOs), and SGs. The market includes a certain amount of RES that must be dispatched. The SG offers the DCO an electricity selling price while simultaneously importing RES from the market at a buying price in order to maximize the benefit. The DCO allocates the workload to different DCs, aiming to minimize the costs of energy consumption and carbon emissions. The interactive processes between different entities are further decomposed into two coupling Stackelberg games. We obtain the equilibrium state of the game and prove its uniqueness and optimality. Simulation experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the joint energy and computation workload management scheme and show its superiority over counterparts in utilizing renewable energy and reducing emissions. This work presents a hybrid method for answer validation in question answering systems, combining neural network methods with explicit logical rules. The Rule-Augmented Neural Network (RANN) framework integrates the expressiveness of neural networks and precision of rule-based systems for improving answer validation accuracy. Using a sample of the Natural Questions dataset, we demonstrate how we can achieve more reliable and interpretable answer validation by complementing traditional neural architectures with domain-specific rules. The experimental results validate the RANN framework. The experimental results emphasize that the hybrid approach outperforms both neural-based models and rule-based reasoning by achieving the best accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score.

Symbols such as numerical sequences, chemical formulas, and table delimiters exist widely, playing important roles in symbol-related tasks such as abstract reasoning, chemical property prediction, and tabular question-answering. Compared to tasks based on natural language expressions, large language models (LLMs) have limitations in understanding and reasoning on symbol-based representations, making it difficult for them to handle symbol-related problems. In this paper, we propose symbol-to-language (S2L), a method that converts symbol-based representations to language-based representations, providing valuable information for language models during reasoning. We found that, for both closed-source and open-source LLMs, the capability to solve symbol-related problems can be largely enhanced by incorporating such language-based representations. For example, by employing S2L for GPT-4, there can be substantial improvements of +21.9% and +9.5% accuracy for 1D-ARC and Dyck language tasks, respectively. There are also consistent improvements in other six general symbol-related tasks such as table understanding and Tweet analysis. Team-based capstone courses are integral to many undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in the computing field. They are designed to help students gain hands-on experience and practice professional skills such as communication, teamwork, and self-reflection as they transition into the real world. Prior research on capstone courses has focused primarily on the experiences of students. The perspectives of instructors who teach capstone courses have not been explored comprehensively. However, an instructor's experience, motivation, and expectancy can have a significant impact on the quality of a capstone course. In this working group, we used a mixed methods approach to understand the experiences of capstone instructors. Issues such as class size, industry partnerships, managing student conflicts, and factors influencing instructor motivation were examined using a quantitative survey and semi-structured interviews with capstone teaching staff from multiple institutions across different continents. Our findings show that there are more similarities than differences across various capstone course structures. Similarities include team size, team formation methodologies, duration of the capstone course, and project sourcing. Differences in capstone courses include class sizes and institutional support. Some instructors felt that capstone courses require more time and effort than regular lecture-based courses. These instructors cited that the additional time and effort is related to class size and liaising with external stakeholders, including industry partners. Some instructors felt that their contributions were not recognized enough by the leadership at their institutions. Others acknowledged institutional support and the value that the capstone brought to their department. Deep Reinforcement Learning Algorithms for Option Hedging

Dynamic hedging is a financial strategy that consists in periodically transacting one or multiple financial assets to offset the risk associated with a correlated liability. Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) algorithms have been used to find optimal solutions to dynamic hedging problems by framing them as sequential decision-making problems. However, most previous work assesses the performance of only one or two DRL algorithms, making an objective comparison across algorithms difficult. In this paper, we compare the performance of eight DRL algorithms in the context of dynamic hedging;Monte Carlo Policy Gradient (MCPG), Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO), along with four variants of Deep Q-Learning (DQL) and two variants of Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG). Two of these variants represent a novel application to the task of dynamic hedging. In our experiments, we use the Black-Scholes delta hedge as a baseline and simulate the dataset using a GJR-GARCH(1,1) model. Results show that MCPG, followed by PPO, obtain the best performance in terms of the root semi-quadratic penalty. Moreover, MCPG is the only algorithm to outperform the Black-Scholes delta hedge baseline with the allotted computational budget, possibly due to the sparsity of rewards in our environment. © 2025, CC BY.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology has promising applications as an intuitive communication tool and in fields such as language rehabilitation. This study aims to decode human speech intentions by analyzing EEG signals recorded during actual and imagined speech. EEG data were collected using a 64 channels system, with preprocessing to remove artifacts. Automatic speech recognition (ASR) was used to extract precise speech onset times, generating time-specific speech annotations corresponding with EEG data. Pretrained Word2Vec embeddings were integrated to provide semantic context, combining neural signals with high-level linguistic features. Support vector machine (SVM), linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were employed for decoding. The results demonstrate that integrating speech annotations improves decoding accuracy, even for imagined speech, highlighting the potential of BCI technology for advanced applications in communication and rehabilitation.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is an effective tool for analyzing consumer satisfaction with products and services typically sold by e-businesses. This study explores the use of sentiment analysis to understand customer feedback and ratings using a dataset acquired by Amazon. That dataset covers online purchases over a period of eight years. The study aims to examine the factors that impact sentiment polarity throughout different periods and understand changes in consumer feelings and reviews towards online products and services. The applied method comprehensively studies sentiment, extracting features using the Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) and other text analysis and data processing procedures. Visualization is also applied to illustrate the trends, patterns, and changes in customer satisfaction over time and per product and line of products. The findings underscore the importance of sentimental research in discerning customer sentiments on online e-commerce platforms and offer practical recommendations for enhancing online and improving customer satisfaction.

IT-related projects are among the most challenging to manage due to their inherent complexity, uncertainty, and the intangibility of their outcomes. However, a data-driven decision-making approach can help tackle these challenges and increase the chance of IT project success. Machine learning techniques can be used to predict uncertain aspects of IT projects, such as the estimation of time, cost, and effort, when applied to historical data collected from previous or similar projects. This approach can allow the project manager to make informed decisions based on facts rather than human judgment or hunch. In this work, we review the potential of data-driven approaches in the management of IT projects, and we demonstrate a use case that applies three regression algorithms, including polynomial regression, linear regression, and partial least squared (PLS), to predict software effort estimation based on the NASA93 public dataset. The best results were achieved using polynomial regression which scored 82% in R 2 , 81% in MAPE, 152 in MAE, 276 in RMSE and 76387 in MSE metrics.

Water scarcity critically threatens agricultural sus-tainability in Jordan, necessitating innovative technological solutions. This study presents a comprehensive framework that integrates Internet of Things (IoT) sensors with Big Data Analytics to optimize water usage in agriculture. Employing a multi-stage approach, we conducted real-time data acquisition from diverse farms, processed the data using clustering algorithms, and implemented intelligent decision-making systems. Our analysis focused on key parameters such as soil moisture, temperature, rainfall, and wind speed across various farming locations. The methodology encompassed extensive field data collection, advanced analytics, and the deployment of smart irrigation systems. Results demonstrated a significant 25 % reduction in water consumption while maintaining optimal crop yields. Additionally, clustering identified three distinct farm categories, each requiring tailored water management strategies. This research contributes to the field of smart agriculture by providing practical, scalable solutions for regions facing severe water scarcity. The findings highlight the potential of advanced technologies to enhance agricultural sustainability and address critical water management challenges.

This article presents a comprehensive study on designing and implementing a dashboard for enhanced data visualization and query support at the University of Petra. The system leverages retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and large language models (LLMs) to support diverse document types, including curricula, course descriptions, and program outcomes, alongside intended learning outcome (ILO)-related files. Our implementation demonstrates significant improvements in data accessibility and query response times while maintaining high accuracy in information retrieval and visualization. Through extensive evaluation, we show that this innovative approach transforms data management processes in higher education by enabling natural language interactions with educational data systems, building upon established business intelligence frameworks while introducing advanced AI capabilities.
