Characterising the fundamental energy efficiency (EE) limits of massive Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems is significant for the development of green wireless communications. This paper analyses the adaptation of optimal BS transmitted power according to channel conditions and users' Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. The optimal BS transmitted power has the potential to be utilised as an effective strategy to reduce BSs power consumption and consequently enhance the EE of the system. Thus, this paper conducts an analytical closed-form expression of optimal downlink BS transmitted power for massive MIMO systems with Zero Forcing (ZF) beamforming processing and perfect Channel State Information (CSI). User required data rate and maximum allowable outage probability are considered as users' QoS constraints. Both of theoretical and the simulation results, for several transmission modes, indicate that the average EE per BS is a unimodal function of the user required data rate that jointly increased up to the maximum point of EE, but further increases in the data rate can only come at a loss in average EE per BS. As the higher the data rate, the higher the circuit and transmit power consumption, due to the need for a larger number of BS antennas. The results indicate that system EE can be enhanced by reducing energy consumption through optimal BS transmitted power. This is achieved by adaptation to channel conditions and users' QoS requirements.

Mobile Context-Aware Recommender systems (CARS) have recently emerged aiming at generating recommendations relevant to the specific environmental and situational usage context. This article reports on the design and implementation of a collaborative filtering-based mobile CARS, developed as part of an e-platform that supports location-based search for retail products and services sold by nearby physical retailer shops. In addition to the current user location, our RS considers a multitude of contextual factors like time, season, demographic data, consumer behavior, and location history of the user in order to derive more meaningful product recommendations. The RS has been tested on real operational environments as well as on lab evaluation trials demonstrating higher accuracy and relevance of recommendations against two baseline approaches.

Intelligent Wheelchairs represent mechanical devices designed to empower individuals with the ability to move independently. This results in a reduction of the user’s energy expenditure and effort required to maneuver the wheels. Additionally, these devices facilitate the movement of visually or physically challenged individuals between different locations. The wheelchair is equipped with a system that recognizes obstacles, thereby minimizing the risk of accidents during transportation. Recently, there has been a growing fascination with smart wheelchairs, which prove particularly advantageous for seamless transportation. These devices find application not only’s for personal use but also in nursing homes, aiding elderly individuals facing mobility challenges. They are particularly in-valuable for those who has lost their mobility. While various type of intelligently designed wheel-chairs has been developing in the past, ongoing advancements introduce new generations with artificial intelligence, offering users a ranges of options. People with life-long disability resulted from accidents, paralysis, or aging often depend on others for assistance. The incorporation of intelligent healthcare systems, including remote health monitoring, enhances their independence by allowing continuous health tracking without requiring active effort from the individual. This is especially beneficial for those facing difficulties accessing traditional medical systems. In today’s world, numerous individuals with disabilities encounter obstacles in their daily lives and mobility. While many rely on external support, the integration of assistive technologies enables them for achieving the degree of self-independence. Among these technologies, wheelchairs are the most commonly utilized. However, some individuals with weakened joints and limbs struggle to maneuver traditional wheelchairs, highlighting the potential benefits of smart wheelchairs. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with power-domain user multiplexing has been considered as one of the potential candidates of the fifth-Generation (5G) systems. In this paper, a two-stage user selection algorithm is proposed based on proportional fairness for downlink NOMA with zero-forcing beamforming (PF-NOMA-ZFBF) in order to improve the throughput-fairness trade-off for NOMA system. We focus on short term fairness, where short term refers to the minimum time window in which a specified fairness is guaranteed and evaluated using Jain's index. A transmit power allocation then applied to enhance the throughput of NOMA system. Simulation results show that the proposed PF-NOMA-ZFBF significantly improves user fairness index with at least 38.96% over conventional NOMA-ZFBF while maintaining the total system sum-rate (near maximum).

Motivated by the move towards the next generation of green communications, we study a power beacon (PB) assisted wireless-powered cooperative communication network (PBWPCCN). A new system model is proposed where a source and a number of relay terminals are not directly connected to the power grid. These terminals, including the source, need to harvests energy from radio frequency (RF) signals radiated from PB and works cooperatively to deliver the information to the target device successfully. The system executes this process in a two-stage relay selection decode-then-forward (2SRS-DF). First, the system selects a group of relay candidates that can successfully decode the received signal from the source. Second, from the first relays group that successfully decodes the source signal, the best relay with the maximum capability to forward the decoded message to the destination is selected. The closed-form expression for the average outage probability and the throughput of the proposed system is derived and presented. We validate the theoretical results by numerical simulations. The impact of position and number of relay terminals along with time allocation parameters are also studied.

Intractable integrals appear in a plethora of problems in science and engineering. Very often, such integrals involve also a targeted distribution which is not even available in a closed form. In both cases, approximations of the integrals must be performed. Monte Carlo (MC) methods are a usual way of tackling the problem by approximating the integral with random samples. Quadrature methods are another alternative, where the integral is approximated with deterministic points and weights. However, the choice of these points and weights is only possible in a selected number of families of distributions. In this paper, we propose a deterministic method inspired in MC for approximating generic integrals. Our method is derived via an importance sampling (IS) interpretation, a MC methodology where the samples are simulated from the so-called proposal density, and weighted properly. We use Gauss-Hermite quadrature rules for Gaussian distributions, transforming them for approximating integrals with respect to generic distributions, even in the case where its normalizing constant is unknown. The novel method allows the use of several proposal distributions, allowing for the incorporation of recent advances in the multiple IS (MIS) literature. We discuss the convergence of the method, and we illustrate its performance with two numerical examples.

In this paper, a broadband elliptical slotted patch antenna has been proposed for 5G wireless communications. The proposed antenna apparatus has a minimal size of 0.308λ 0 × 0.308λ 0 × 0.009λ 0 at 22 GHz. The antenna bandwidth is enhanced for an elliptical ground plane. Microstrip feed line has been connected by a stub, to achieve better impedance. Array design has been designed for better gain, therefore array design has been made. The array has a high gain of about 18 dBi at 28 GHz and 21dBi at 38 GHz. The proposed antenna covers a wide band area from 22 GHz to 48 GHz. The proposed antenna covers 28/38 GHz. The antenna additionally gives omnidirectional to required 5G bands.

In this paper, the design of a new printed circularly polarized (CP) antenna with an octave operating bandwidth is presented. The design technique is different from conventional monopole/dipole antenna. The antenna has a microstrip-fed line of rectangular radiator printed on RT/Duroid substrate with the total dimension of 106 mm × 60 mm × 1.57 mm. In the bottom, another rectangular radiator is printed which act as a ground. The upper and bottom radiators are both constituted in asymmetric feeding so that the surface current generate left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) orthogonally. The design is simulated in HFSS simulation solver and the properties are carefully analyzed to verify the antenna characteristics. The simulated result shows the bandwidth of 960 MHz to 2.60 GHz under a 10-dB return loss and axial ratio bandwidth of 2 GHz to 5 GHz at 3-dB. With a stable gain of 4.2 dB the antenna shows circular polarization. A parametric study of the surface current distribution and the mechanism of CP is analyzed. © 2017 IEEE.

In this paper we present the fundamental concept, as well as, the objectives and the architecture of HarmonicSS EU project. The proposed architecture envisages to address (i) the lack of patient stratification in large patient cohorts, (ii) the dataset heterogeneity across these cohorts, and (iii) the incomplete understanding of disease pathogenesis. In order to do so, ontology matching mechanisms are recruited for harmonizing the clinical data, distributed data analytics services have been designed for the de-centralized analysis of patient data, and different health policies can be assessed, all of them with respect to the data protection guidelines posed by the upcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The HarmonicSS architecture has been employed towards the development of a data sharing, harmonization and distributed analytics framework for the recruitment and analysis of heterogeneous regional, national and international longitudinal cohorts of patients with primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS). Multi-way and device-to-device (D2D) communications are currently considered for the design of future communication systems. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be effectively deployed to extend the communication range of D2D networks. To model the UAV-D2D interaction, we study a multi-antenna multi-way channel with two D2D users and an intermittently available UAV node. The performance in terms of sum-rate of various transmission schemes is compared. Numerical results show that for different ground environments, the scheme based on a combination of interference alignment, zero-forcing and erasure-channel treatment outperforms other schemes at low, medium and high SNRs and thus represents a viable transmission strategy for UAV-aided multi-way D2D networks.
