Platooning, the idea of cars autonomously following their leaders to form a road train, has huge potentials to improve traffic flow efficiency and, most importantly, road traffic safety. Wireless communication is a fundamental building block - it is needed to manage and to maintain the platoons. To keep the system stable, strict constraints in terms of update frequency and reliability must be met. We developed communication strategies by explicitly taking into account the requirements of the controller, exploiting synchronized communication slots as well as transmit power adaptation. The proposed approaches are compared to two state of the art adaptive beaconing protocols that have been designed for generic message dissemination. Our simulation models have been parametrized and validated by means of real-world experiments. We clearly show how taking into account specific requirements can be extremely beneficial even in very crowded freeway scenarios. © 2014 IEEE.

The paper presents the research conducted within the framework of the STHENOS project (***), which aims at the development of methodologies and systems for assistive environments. The proposed systems and applications are capable of recognizing the human activities and assist disabled or elder persons in performing every day activities and detect abnormal situations such as a fall or long periods of inactivity. The paper includes the technical details of the proposed activity recognition methodology using fisheye video cameras and wearable sensors. Initial results have proven the feasibility of the adopted approaches and the efficiency of the implemented system. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

This paper considers a scenario in which multiple device-to-device (D2D) users can reuse the uplink resources of a cellular network to transmit directly to their corresponding receivers. The aggregated interference from the D2D users is limited by applying a threshold on the allowable interference in the base station. The problem is solved under two types of constraints, namely, the peak interference and average interference constraints. In the former, we assume that full channel state information (CSI) is available at the base station, and we optimize the allowable transmit power for the D2D users so that the number of coexisting D2D communications is maximized. We further define a quality-of-service constraint for the D2D users. In practice, however, it is difficult to have complete CSI at the base station as it imposes heavy signaling overhead. Therefore, in the latter scenario, we assume that no knowledge about the location of D2D users and their CSI are available at the base station. This approach does not impose any signaling overhead. Our results show that even with no CSI knowledge, we are able to improve the system performance in terms of throughput by allowing coexisting D2D communications while satisfying the cellular user's constraints. © 2014 IEEE.

Merging WBAN systems with cloud computing is an efficient solution to overcome limitations inherent in WBAN, especially in critical human-related applications such as remote health monitoring. In cloud-based WBAN, the nodes are classified into WBAN sensors that report measurements about the human body and WBAN actuators that receive commands from the medical staff and perform actions. Authenticating these commands is a critical security issue as any alteration may lead to serious consequences. This paper presents a light-weight public-key authentication protocol for cloud-based WBAN systems. The proposed protocol is based on the modified Rabin authentication algorithm which is customized in this paper by making some of its components run in parallel. To prove the efficiency of the modified Rabin we implemented the algorithm with different hardware settings using Tmote Sky motes. The Rabin algorithm with and without the parallel settings is also programmed on FPGA to evaluate its design and performance. The results show that secure, direct, instant, and authenticated commands can be delivered from the medical staff located at the cloud side to the WBAN nodes located in/on the human body. Compared to other public-key protocols implemented on the motes, Rabin algorithm achieved extremely faster verification and reasonable signature gen- eration speed. Moreover, the suggested parallel settings of the Rabin signature generation significantly reduced the delays( by almost 80%) which is a critical issue in WBAN applications. Copyright © 2014 ICST.

The DeSyRe project builds on-demand adaptive, reliable systems-on-Chips. In response to the current semiconductor technology trends thatmake chips becoming less reliable, DeSyRe describes a newgeneration of by design reliable systems, at a reduced power and performance cost. This is achieved through the following main contributions. DeSyRe defines a fault-tolerant system architecture built out of unreliable components, rather than aiming at totally fault-free and hence more costly chips. In addition, DeSyRe systems are on-demand adaptive to various types and densities of faults, as well as to other system constraints and application requirements. For leveraging on-demand adaptation/customization and reliability at reduced cost, a new dynamically reconfigurable substrate is designed and combined with runtime system software support. The above define a generic and repeatable design framework, which is applied to two medical SoCs with high reliability constraints and diverse performance and power requirements. One of the main goals of the DeSyRe project is to increase the availability of SoC components in the presence of permanents faults, caused at manufacturing time or due to device aging. A mix of coarse- and fine-grain reconfigurable hardware substrate is designed to isolate and bypass faulty component parts. The flexibility provided by the DeSyRe reconfigurable substrate is exploited at runtime by system optimization heuristics,which decide tomodify component configurationwhen a permanent fault is detected, providing graceful degradation. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

Crowdsourced multimedia data poses several challenges when it is collected, stored, indexed, retrieved, and visualized. Examples of crowd source multimedia data are social sensors, vehicle sensors, physical sensors, human sensors, etc. Analyzing such multimodal and diversified crowdsourced data provides very rich understanding about the need of individuals within a crowd. Such understanding makes it possible to tailor services to individuals' needs, also called context-aware services. In this paper, we propose a spatial multimedia big data framework that can collect multimedia data from 1) a very large crowd equipped with multi-sensory smartphones, 2) vehicles, and 3) social networks. A set of multimedia services are offered to users to support their spatio-temporal activities. These include but not limited to 1) simple user interfaces to utilize multimedia services for instant guidance, 2) navigation to points of interests (POI), and 3) efficient and cost effective intra-city rides to users. The big data framework is designed to handle a very large number of multimedia spatio-temporal queries in real-time. The system is a pilot project and will be deployed during the event of Hajj 2015 when over three million pilgrims from all over the world will visit Makkah, Saudi Arabia to perform their Hajj rituals.

In this work we present the decision support of the EMBalance platform. EMBalance is a platform for the management of balance disorders in terms of diagnosis, treatment and evolution. The EMBalance platform aims to extend existing but generic and currently uncoupled balance modelling activities leading to a multi-scale and patient-specific balance model, which will be incorporated in a Decision Support System (DSS), towards the early diagnosis, prediction and the efficient treatment planning of balance disorders. The diagnosis part of the decision support system uses various data ranging from demographic characteristics to clinical examinations, auditory and vestibular tests. Currently we present some initial technical choices and indicative results of the decision support system for diagnosing balance disorders, based on data mining techniques and clinical guidelines.

Cooperative driving in general and Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) or platooning in particular require blending control theory, communications and networking, as well as mechanics and physics. Given the lack of an integrated modeling framework and theory as well as the prohibitively high costs of using prototypes for what-if studies, simulation remains the fundamental instrument to evaluate entire cooperative driving systems. This work presents Plexe, an Open Source extension to Veins that offers researchers a simulation environment able to run experiments in realistic scenarios, taking into account physics and mechanics of the vehicles, communications and networking impairments, and Inter-Vehicle communication (IVC) protocol stacks. Plexe is easily extensible and already implements protocols to support platooning and cooperative driving applications and several state of the art cruise control models. We describe the structure of the simulator and the control algorithms that Plexe implements and provide two use cases which show the potential of our framework as a powerful research tool for cooperative driving systems.
