THE DIGITAL engineering FACTORY: CONSIDERATIONS, CURRENT STATUS, AND LESSONS LEARNED

In industry, the advancement of digital engineering and the digital thread aims to reduce the impact of knowledge ‘siloes’ by providing a way to integrate data across the entire system lifecycle and across multiple domains. In a typical engineering curriculum, however, courses are still treated as ‘siloes’, and students often do not have the opportunity to experience this industrially relevant approach to engineering. The Digital engineering Factory (DEF) is a digital engineering environment under development at the University of Arizona to support engineering students. The DEF supports students by providing access to multiple engineering tools and is structured using a ‘hub-and-spoke’ approach to consolidate data from these tools. Through this connected architecture, students can transfer data generated in a particular course to tools for use in other courses. Connecting course activities in this way enables students to experience a complete end-to-end system lifecycle. At its ‘hub’, the DEF uses Violet to integrate data from multiple sources, create a digital thread, and generate a graph representation of the dataset. This knowledge graph, written in the Ontological Modeling Language (OML), can be viewed in OML Rosetta and is structured according to the University of Arizona Ontology Stack (UAOS). The use of the UAOS and OML Rosetta allows instructors to leverage semantic web technologies to support teaching activities such as grading. In this paper, the authors review the objectives of the DEF, discuss the status of the project, and highlight current limitations and lessons learned with regards to its deployment. The goal of this research is to create an optimized hybrid coupler structure for a PIN diode reflection type phase shifter (RTPS) operating at microwave frequencies. To date, no phase shifter has been reported with the proposed technique, compactness, minimum phase error and balanced amplitude. Another limitation of designing such structures at such high frequency range, is that the 50Ω impedance lines' width approaches its length for given substrate thickness, that is undesirable. This study introduces a new method of developing a module at 100 Ω and translating it back to 50 Ω at the input and output terminals. Moreover, the proposed design is highly resilient to manufacturing constraints owing to the addition of radial stubs instead of lumped components, as reflective loads. Its performance with respect to its bandwidth coverage is better with 15% bandwidth enhancement, insertion loss around 3dB, and reflection co-efficient at all ports is better than -15dB over the whole operating bandwidth. The simulated and measured results validate the proposed design effectively. © 2024 IEEE.

Images from passive imaging polarimeters are often displayed in terms of their intensity (s0), degree of linear polarization (DoLP), and angle of polarization (AOP). The AOP and DoLP together generally provide information about shape and surface quality of imaged objects;however, the information conveyed in these images are often difficult to interpret, especially to an analyst unfamiliar with polarization phenomenology. Furthermore, it can be challenging to train machine learning approaches with direct polarimetric information due to the limited availability of application-specific data. Augmenting s0 images with polarimetric information in the form of contrast and shape enhancement thus allows for the data to remain in the domain of traditional EO-IR intensity imagery that is more familiar for both humans and trained networks. In this work we explore several strategies for effectively fusing polarimetric information into s0 imagery to improve target shape and contrast for both human and algorithmic consumption, with a particular focus on remote sensing and target detection applications. © 2024 SPIE.

A permanent magnet was used to improve the torque density of the magnetic gear for gear ratio conversion, and a study was conducted to attach the permanent magnet to the tooth tip of the rotor. Through this, it was found that attaching a permanent magnet to the outer rotor is effective. In addition, in the case of gear ratio conversion, in this method, there is a part where the magnetization direction of the electromagnet and the permanent magnet are opposite, resulting in poor results. Therefore, when applied to teeth with coincident magnetization directions, good results were obtained in all cases even when the gear ratio was converted. The proliferation of 5G technologies has presented challenges such as signal attenuation and high energy consumption. This study proposes a novel approach to enhance wireless networks by integrating Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRS) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimize signal propagation and predict the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI). A new framework combines K-means clustering for IRS deployment with a Temporal Convolutional Network-Gated Recurrent Unit (TCN-GRU) model for signal prediction. Using data from 15,000 Wi-Fi access points in Herefordshire, UK, the results demonstrate significant improvements in signal strength, with the proposed model achieving a Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 37% lower than the existing models, indicating higher prediction accuracy. In addition to enhancing signal quality, the framework achieves throughput increases of 21.26% with single-group IRS and 64.91% with multi-group IRS. These results validate the proposed the potential of the framework to improve performance, making it suitable for next-generation wireless networks. © 2025 IEEE.

A 16-channel monolithic electronic-photonic receiver for flash time-of-flight LIDAR is demonstrated in 45nm silicon photonic process. The efficient operation of the unified Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) - Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) systems is important for enhancing data sensing, communication, and computation processes in next-generation wireless systems. Despite prior research focusing on these systems, little attention has been given to optimizing the device-edge server associations. This paper addresses this gap by introducing the novel two-stage device-edge server association Synergia framework. Firstly, representative utility functions capture the characteristics of the devices and MEC servers by jointly considering their sensing, communication, and computation characteristics. Secondly, the Estimated Synergia framework leverages the Matching Theory to rapidly determine an initial device-server matching by disregarding the devices' externalities, i.e., the matching decisions of other devices. Thirdly, the Accurate Synergia model refines and improves this matching by using the coalition formation games, while considering the devices' externalities in optimizing the utilities of both the devices and the MEC servers. Extensive numerical evaluations demonstrate the Synergia's operational efficiency and scalability, outperforming reinforcement learningbased approaches. Also, a real-world application involving car accident detection validates its applicability. © 2024 IEEE.

Crowdsourcing plays a critical role in modern information gathering and task execution, yet it faces challenges regarding the task selection and equitable monetary incentives distribution. In this paper, we introduce the TOPMG framework, which addresses these challenges by enabling the workers to select tasks based on their historically experienced monetary incentives and the platforms' trustworthiness. Specifically, the TOPMG framework utilizes a reinforcement learning approach based on the principles of Optimistic Q-learning with Upper Confidence Bound (OQ-UCB) algorithm, guiding the platform selection process by considering the workers' monetary incentives, profit, and the platforms' trustworthiness. Also, the proposed framework introduces a multilateral bargaining game to allocate the platforms' monetary incentives to the workers by prioritizing their information contribution, fairness, and the platforms' reputation. Simulation results demonstrate TOPMG's operational dynamics, scalability, and efficacy, as well as its superiority over existing methodologies. © 2024 IEEE.

The Information-Centric Networking (ICN) paradigm has reshaped the modern network architectures and promises efficient content delivery to the end-users. This paper introduces TRUSTCACHE, a novel framework enabling the content caching within ICNs and focusing on the trust-based ICN selection and optimal cache memory allocation to the Content Providers (CPs). The TRUSTCACHE framework incorporates the Optimistic Q-learning with Upper Confidence Bound reinforcement learning algorithm that enables the CPs to autonomously select ICNs based on their cache memory availability and trust levels. Also, TRUSTCACHE enables the CPs to jointly consider the reliability of the ICNs and their cache memory availability by integrating a novel trust model. Furthermore, TRUSTCACHE leverages the multilateral bargaining principles in order to ensure the optimal cache memory allocation among the CPs, in terms of aligning with their profit margin characteristics. Simulation-based experiments validate TRUSTCACHE's operational efficiency across diverse CP profit margin profiles and highlight its superiority over alternative models lacking trust-based ICN selection or employing proportional fairness strategies for cache memory allocation. © 2024 IEEE.

In this research study, a comparative analysis is presented that analyze the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) in two distinct communication systems Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and a Local Acoustic Channel. This study incorporates insights from the BELLHOP model to enhance understanding of sound propagation in depth of water and guide the adaptation of OFDM for optimized communication. From simulated experiments, evaluate the performance of OFDM is assessed in the presence of local acoustic channel and AWGN, the important parameters like signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and bit error rate (BER). The system of BELLHOP provides valuable context in the comparative analysis, highlighting the result of environmental factors on the performance of OFDM. The study not only contributes to the ongoing efforts in advancing underwater communication technique but also emphasizes the significance of tailored approach's in different underwater scenarios, ultimately having the way for more robust and efficient communication systems beneath the waves. Through a comparative analysis between AWGN and a local acoustic channel, results show that the system achieves a BER of 10-3 at SNR of 10 in local acoustic channel, while in the AWGN, a similar BER is achieved at SNR of 16. © 2024 IEEE.
