Temporary congestion on wireless mesh networks is often encountered. The robustness of connections is a critical issue in wireless mesh network. Rate reduction is the general way to mitigate congestion nowadays. In this paper, a new approach called as Path-alternation-based throughput regulator (PATR) is proposed to improve the robustness of TCP connections. In the proposed PATR, a Region-established M-RMAODV is derived for multipath construction. Then Rate-based Congestion Detection discovers the connection congestion. Mesh pathalternation determines a reliable path-choosing and pathswitching during congestion period. Both grid and random topologies are designed to verify the performance of PATR. From simulation results, PATR dramatically improves the throughput of TCP connections and supplies a reliable transmission in wireless mesh networks. © 2010 IEEE.

With the fast proliferation of the mobile internet, the wireless community has been increasingly looking for a framework that can provide seamless mobility. In this paper, we propose a fast cross-layer handover scheme based on movement prediction in mobile WiMAX environment. Prediction is achieved by auto-regressive integrated moving average (ARIMA(p,d,q)) model. The orders of the model parameters are estimated from the signal strength samples of mobile users. By utilizing signal strength prediction, layer-3 handover activities are able to occur prior to start of layer-2 handover procedure, and therefore, total handover latency and service disruption time can be reduced. The experiments conducted with system parameters and propagation model defined by WiMAX Forum demonstrate that the proposed method predicts the future signal level accurately and reduces the total handover latency and packet drop probabilities. ©2010 IEEE.

Temporary congestion on wireless mesh networks is often encountered. The robustness of connections has become a significant issue. Rate reduction is the general way to mitigate congestion nowadays. “Path-alternation-based throughput regulator (PATR)” is an alternative-path approach to improve the robustness of TCP connections and it consists of three mechanisms. Region-established M-RMAODV is derived for multipath construction. Rate-based Congestion Detection discovers the connection congestion. Mesh path-alternation works reliable path-choosing and path-switching during congestion period. Both grid and random topologies are designed to verify the correctness and feasibility of PATR. From simulation results, we are convinced that PATR dramatically improves the throughput of TCP connections and supplies a reliable transmission in wireless mesh networks.

With the development of internet technology and computing costs continue to decline, the realization of being the dream of digital home life. In this paper, we will explore Open Service Gateway initiative (OSGi) technology to develop a transferable framework to support a cross-platform environment of health-care service Intelligent Home Health-Care Box platform to achieve the following objectives: (1) To develop remote physiological signal measurements (2) To take advantage of OSGi (Open Service Gateway initiative) to construct a transferable framework for embedded computing. (3) To reduce the program size in an embedded system and upgrade the performance in run time stage. In this constructed environment, home user can demand services prompted by a service-discovery mechanism and interact with health-care devices through network. In other words, networking, intelligence and multimedia are the guidelines to investigate and develop the residential information system who will serve people at home in a friendly manner and improve the quality of home living. © 2009 by Knowledge Systems Institute Graduate School.

The basic operation of Delay Tolerant Sensor Network (DTSN) is to finish pervasive data gathering in networks with intermittent connectivity, while the publish/subscribe (Pub/Sub for short) paradigm is used to deliver events from a source to interested clients in an asynchronous way. Recently, to extend a Pub/Sub system in DTSN has become a promising topic. However, due to the unique characteristic of frequent partitioning in DTSN, to extend a Pub/Sub system in DTSN is a considerably difficult and challenging problem, and there is no good solution to it in existing works. To adapt Pub/Sub systems to DTSN, we propose CED, a community-based event delivery protocol. In our design, event delivery is based on several unchanged communities, which are formed by sensor nodes in the network according to their connectivity. CED consists of two components: Event delivery and queue management. In event delivery, events in a community are delivered to mobile subscribers once a subscriber comes into the community, for improving the data delivery ratio. The queue management employs both the event successful delivery time and the event survival time to decide whether an event should be delivered or dropped for minimizing the transmission overhead. The effectiveness of CED is demonstrated through comprehensive simulation studies. © 2009 IEEE.

In this paper, a dynamic scan initiation scheme in a 802.16e network is proposed in order for a mobile station to avoid waste of resources while meeting given handover time. Using statistical analysis on the received signal strength, a mobile station can trigger a scanning process only when a handover is anticipated regardless of random errors in radio propagation environments. ©2008 IEEE.

PMIPv6 is proposed as a new network-based mobility protocol and it does not require MN's involving in mobility signaling. PMIPv6 can handover relatively faster than MIPv6 because of using link layer attachment information and micro mobility characteristic. However, current PMIPv6 cannot prevent packet loss in disruption period. We proposed in this paper, Smart Buffering scheme for supporting seamless handover in PMIPv6. Smart Buffering scheme prevents packet loss totally by buffering lost candidate packets in a current serving MAG and forwarding it to a new MAG, after an MN successfully connected. Smart Buffering also performs redundant packet removing in a previous MAG and packet reordering in a new MAG to maximize performance of seamless handover. All these procedures between a previous MAG and a new MAG are processed using simple message exchanges without requiring any involving of an MN. We verified the effectiveness of the Smart Buffering by simulation with various parameters. Simulation results prove that proposed scheme prevent packet loss in the handover and handle buffered packets very efficiently. As a result, we conclude that Smart Buffering is very useful for supporting seamless handover in PMIPv6.

In this paper, a real-time scheduler designed for virtual machine (VM) is proposed. In traditional VMs, low throughout and long response time are the typical problems encountered due to the sharing of processor time and I/O peripherals among VMs. Instead of classic first-in-first-out task scheduling, a prioritybased multiple queuing design is proposed to ensure the executions of real-time tasks. The details of the proposed scheduler is presented, including scheduler modeling, operations, analysis and performance evaluation. The experimental results demonstrate valuable features of the proposed scheduler, including (1) the great improvement of the scheduling-induced delay (SI-Delay) for real-time tasks, (2) fast response time (3) feasible software solution. The developed scheme is the key to prompt the VM efficiency, in particular, for the applications with high real-time demand, such as multimedia services. © 2008 by Knowledge Systems Institute Graduate School. This paper proposes a system embedded within digital TVs that aims at TV program recommendation based on descriptive metadata collected from versatile sources. The proposed system comprises a user profiling subsystem identifying user preferences and a user agent subsystem performing content rating. For intelligent implicit TV profiling, a novel scheme for observable TV user behaviors is developed based on linear regression. Furthermore, a new relation-based similarity measure is suggested to improve categorized TV program rating precision. The experimental results show that the content rating precision is enhanced enough by the proposed schemes. ©2008 IEEE.

Recently, the IETF NETLMM working group is standardizing a network-based localized mobility management (NETLMM) protocol called Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6), yet the research on NETLMM is still in its early stage while it has attracted a fair amount of critical attention both in the telecommunication and the internet communities. Unlike previous host-based mobility management protocols such as Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6), hierarchical Mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6), and fast handover for Mobile IPv6 (FMIPv6), PMIPv6 has salient features and is expected to expedite the real deployment of IP mobility support protocol by using only collaborative operations between the network entities without mobile node (MN) being involved. In this paper,we analyze and compare the handover latency of PMIPv6 with those of the various existing host-based IP mobility management protocols. In addition, we show good efficacy of the desirable features and key strengths of PMIPv6. Numerical results demonstrate that (1) the handover latency of PMIPv6 is much lower than those of MIPv6 and HMIPv6, and (2) the handover latency of PMIPv6 becomes lower than that of FMIPv6 in case the wireless link delay is greater than the delay between mobile access gateway (MAG) and local mobility anchor (LMA).
