An energy-efficient uni-scheduling based on S-MAC in wireless sensor network

S-MAC is a MAC (Medium Access Control) protocol as specialized for the wireless sensor network in order to sacrifice transmission delay and extend the working life of the whole sensor nodes. S-MAC, which was made by modifying IEEE 802.11, reduced the energy wasted in the wireless sensor network by using a periodic listen and sleep scheduling method. The first task that the wireless sensor network using S-MAC performs is to find a neighbor node, and then choose and broadcast its own schedule. In this process, as a result of using a time selected randomly and scheduling, diversified schedules are generated. In the end, schedule clusters, which are different from one another, get to be made, and nodes on these cluster borders fail to communicate with one another due to an inconsistent listen time. In the existing paper on S-MAC, this problem is solved by placing a border node to adopt schedules which are different from one another. However, compared with other nodes, the border node consumes energy more, and its efficiency of data transmission according to the broadcast type is lower. This paper suggested a method for unifying schedules through the H-SYNC (Heartbeat-SYNC) method for solving such problem of the diversified scheduling of S-MAC, and as a result of comparing and evaluating its performance through simulation, it was found that the border node consumed energy less. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

This paper presents active contours based method for hand tracking using color information. The main problem in active contours based approach is that results are very sensitive to location of the initial curve. Initial curve far form the object induces more heavy computational cost, low accuracy of results, as well as missing the object that has a large movement. Therefore, this paper presents a hand tracking method using a mean shift algorithm and active contours. The proposed method consists of two steps: hand localization and hand extraction. In the first step, the hand location is estimated using mean shift. And the second step, at the location, evolves the initial curve using an active contour model. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed method, it is applied to real image sequences which include moving hand. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Traditional approaches in document categorization use the term-based classification techniques to classify the documents. The techniques, for enormous terms, are not effective to the applications that need speedy response or not much space. This paper presents an effective concept-based document categorization system, which can efficiently classify Korean documents through the thesaurus tool. The thesaurus tool is the information extractor that acquires the meanings of document terms from the thesaurus. It supports effective document categorization with the acquired meanings. The system uses the concept-probability vector to represent the meanings of the terms. Because the category of the document depends on the meanings than the terms, even though the size of the vector is small, the system can classify the document without degradation of the performance. The system uses the small concept-probability vector so that it can save the time and space for document categorization. The experimental results suggest that the presented system with the thesaurus tool can effectively classify the documents. The results show that even though the system uses the contracted vector for document categorization, the performance of the system is not degraded. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

By merging network and channel interfaces, resulting interfaces allow multiple computers to physically share storage devices. A storage area network (SAN) is a high-speed special-purpose network (or subnetwork) that interconnects different kinds of data storage devices with associated data servers on behalf of a larger network of users. In SAN, computers service local file requests directly from shared storage devices. Direct device access eliminates the server machines as bottlenecks to performance and availability. Communication is unnecessary between computers, since each machine views the storage as being locally attached. SAN provides us to very large physical storage up to 64-bit address space, but traditional file systems can't adapt to the file system for SAN because they have the limitation of scalability. In this paper, we present architectures and features of SANtopia that allows multiple machines to access and share disk and tape devices on a Fibre Channel or SCSI storage network in Linux system. It performs well as a local file system, as a traditional network file system running over IP environments, and as a high performance cluster file system running over storage area networks like Fibre Channel. SANtopia provides a key cluster enabling technology for Linux, helping to bring the availability, scalability, and load balancing benefits of clustering to Linux. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

With the rapid advances of wireless and positioning technologies, an interest in LBS (Location-Based Services) is gradually rising. To provide LBS, tracking data should have been stored in database with the proper policies and managed efficiently. In this paper, tracking data management technique using topology is proposed. Tracking data is corresponded to the moving path of an object. In proposed technique, database is updated when moving object arrived at a street intersection or a curved road which is represented as the node in topology and we can predict the location at past and future with attribute of topology and linear function. In this technique, location data that are correspond to the node in topology are stored, thus reduce the number of updates of data. Also as using topology as well as existing location information, accuracy for prediction of location is increased than applying only linear function or spline function. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

The proposed ABA scheme uses the queue occupancy as a feedback to adaptively allocate the bandwidth for each queue of EF PHB. Because the allocated bandwidth converges to the corresponding input traffic, ABA remains the queue dynamics steadily. The feedback gain is used as an operational parameter to determine the steady state of each controlled queue. The characteristics of the steady class queue show the valuable features: (1) the constant queueing delay in router (2) the alleviated queue management. The packet delay controllability in each DiffServ router is vital to synchronize delivery delay of different routes. For multicast streaming service, ABA compensates the delay differences of clients to synchronize the time of packets arrived at clients. The simulation results show that ABA effectively improves the delay controllability and enhance the reliability of streaming services. © 2004 IEEE.

We present a graphics hardware system to implement supersampling cost-effectively. Supersampling is the well-known technique to produce high quality images. However, rendering the scene at a higher resolution requires a large amount of memory size and memory bandwidth. Such costs can be alleviated by grouping subpixels into a fragment with a coverage mask which indicates which part of the pixel is covered. However, this may cause color distortion when several objects either overlap or intersect with each other within a pixel. In order to minimize such errors, we introduce an extra buffer, called the RuF(Recently used Fragment)-buffer, for storing the footprint of a fragment most recently used in the color manipulation. In our experiments, the proposed system can produce high quality images as good as supersampling with a smaller amount of memory size and memory bandwidth, compared with the conventional supersampling. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.
