The next generation of water Cherenkov neutrino telescopes in the Mediterranean Sea are under construction offshore France (KM3NeT/ORCA) and Sicily (KM3NeT/ARCA). The KM3NeT/ORCA detector features an energy detection threshold which allows to collect atmospheric neutrinos to study flavour oscillation. This paper reports the KM3NeT/ORCA sensitivity to this phenomenon. The event reconstruction, selection and classification are described. The sensitivity to determine the neutrino mass ordering was evaluated and found to be 4.4σ if the true ordering is normal and 2.3σ if inverted, after three years of data taking. The precision to measure ∆m232 and θ23 were also estimated and found to be 85 · 10-6 eV2 and (+1.9/-3.4)° for normal neutrino mass ordering and, 75 · 10-6 eV2 and (+2.0/-7.0)° for inverted ordering. Finally, a unitarity test of the leptonic mixing matrix by measuring the rate of tau neutrinos is described. The KM3NeT research infrastructure is under construction in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of two water Cherenkov neutrino detectors, ARCA and ORCA, aimed at neutrino astrophysics and oscillation research, respectively. Instrumenting a large volume of sea water with ∼ 6200 optical modules comprising a total of ∼ 200,000 photomultiplier tubes, KM3NeT will achieve sensitivity to ∼ 10 MeV neutrinos from Galactic and near-Galactic core-collapse supernovae through the observation of coincident hits in photomultipliers above the background. In this paper, the sensitivity of KM3NeT to a supernova explosion is estimated from detailed analyses of background data from the first KM3NeT detection units and simulations of the neutrino signal. The KM3NeT observational horizon (for a 5 σ discovery) covers essentially the Milky-Way and for the most optimistic model, extends to the Small Magellanic Cloud (∼ 60 kpc). Detailed studies of the time profile of the neutrino signal allow assessment of the KM3NeT capability to determine the arrival time of the neutrino burst with a few milliseconds precision for sources up to 5-8 kpc away, and detecting the peculiar signature of the standing accretion shock instability if the core-collapse supernova explosion happens closer than 3-5 kpc, depending on the progenitor mass. Astrophysical sources of gravitational waves, such as binary neutron star and black hole mergers or core-collapse supernovae, can drive relativistic outows, giving rise to non-thermal high-energy emission. High-energy neutrinos are signatures of such outows. The detection of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from common sources could help establish the connection between the dynamics of the progenitor and the properties of the outow. We searched for associated emission of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from astrophysical transients with minimal assumptions using data from Advanced LIGO from its first observing run O1, and data from the Antares and IceCube neutrino observatories from the same time period. We focused on candidate events whose astrophysical origin could not be determined from a single messenger. We found no significant coincident candidate, which we used to constrain the rate density of astrophysical sources dependent on their gravitational wave and neutrino emission processes. The design of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) engine for an autonomous agent (bot) in a game is always a difficult task mainly done by an expert human player, who has to transform his/her knowledge into a behavioural engine. This paper presents an approach for conducting this task by means of Genetic Programming (GP) application. This algorithm is applied to design decision trees to be used as bot's AI in 1 vs 1 battles inside the RTS game Planet Wars. Using this method it is possible to create rule-based systems defining decisions and actions, in an automatic way, completely different from a human designer doing them from scratch. These rules will be optimised along the algorithm run, considering the bot's performance during evaluation matches. As GP can generate and evolve behavioural rules not taken into account by an expert, the obtained bots could perform better than human-defined ones. Due to the difficulties when applying Computational Intelligence techniques in the videogames scope, such as noise factor in the evaluation functions, three different fitness approaches have been implemented and tested in this work. Two of them try to minimize this factor by considering additional dynamic information about the evaluation matches, rather than just the final result (the winner), as the other function does. In order to prove them, the best obtained agents have been compared with a previous bot, created by an expert player (from scratch) and then optimised by means of Genetic Algorithms. The experiments show that the three used fitness functions generate bots that outperform the optimized human-defined one, being the area-based fitness function the one that produces better results.

The intensive use of social media through mobile devices has leveraged the development of digital diary applications that keep track of social events as well as geotagged multimedia content. In a large crowd where users with cultural diversity perform spatiotemporal activities, such geotagged multimedia content facilitates users' navigation through points of interest (POI) based on their preferences. This work presents a crowdsourced geo-spatial multimedia data aggregation tool that allows users to develop diary chapters relevant to forthcoming users' spatio-temporal activities. Our proposed solution provides users with the ability to add POIs through an authoring environment with multiple dimensions, such as spatio-temporal filters, multimedia categories, and event types. Specific application domains such as emergency situations, leisure trips, journalism, and tourism can take benefit of this technique. This authoring environment also visualizes geo-spatial multimedia content for collocated points of interest (CPOI) with moving users' timelines. We plan to integrate our proposed authoring environment as a proof of concept into our existing large-scale crowdsourcing environment that is envisioned to support millions of users during the Hajj 2015 event.

The segmentation of the breast from the background and the pectoral muscle is the first pre-processing step in computerised mammographic analysis. This problem is usually solved by dividing it into two different segmentation strategies, one for the background and another one for the pectoral muscle. In this paper we tackle this problem jointly using a supervised single strategy. Namely, from a set of manually segmented mammograms, we model each of the three regions (breast, pectoral muscle, and background) using position, intensity, and texture information. Although the approach requires a training step, it allows a fast and reliable segmentation of new mammograms. The obtained results using 149 mammograms of the MIAS database show a high degree of overlap between manual and automatic segmentation. © 2014 IEEE.

White Rabbit (WR) is an Ethernet-based technology that provides data transfer and synchronization in sensor networks with a sub-nanosecond accuracy and a precision of 20 picoseconds. WR networks are composed of switches and nodes forming a tree hierarchical model where end-nodes are connected to different sensors and actuators whilst WR switches are intermediate elements that are used as time reference distributors through the whole network. WR networks access requires the utilization of specialized timing interfaces. To allow their utilization on commodity hardware, we have developed a White Rabbit Network Interface Card (WR-NIC). The WR-NIC is composed of a WR node provided with the proper gateware that can be plugged in a PCIe slot of a conventional computer and can be controlled by a Linux kernel driver as a standard network interface card (NIC). The same node allows a standalone operation mode thanks to the utilization of a C/C++ library called CALoE, which provides the device with remotely control features. The AXIOM project (Agile, eXtensible, fast I/O Module) aims at researching new software/hardware architectures for the future Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs). These systems are expected to react in real-time, provide enough computational power for the assigned tasks, consume the least possible energy for such task (energy efficiency), scale up through modularity, allow for an easy programmability across performance scaling, and exploit at best existing standards at minimal costs.

Eye blinking classical conditioning is one of the most extensively studied paradigms related to the cerebellum. In this work we have defined a realistic cerebellar model through the use of artificial spiking neural networks, testing it in computational simulations reproducing the eye blinking classical conditioning in multiple sessions of acquisition and extinction. We used two models: one with only the cortical plasticity and another with three plasticity sites, one plasticity at cortical level and two at nuclear level. We have compared the behavioral outcome of the two different models and proved that the model with a distributed plasticity produces a faster and more stable acquisition of conditioned responses in the reacquisition phase with respect to the single plasticity model. This behavior is explained by the effect of the nuclear plasticities, which have a slow dynamics and can express memory consolidation and savings.

This paper presents a design of an elliptical patch textile antenna having operating frequency at 2.45 GHz for RFID application. The proposed antenna consists of elliptical patch on Dacron fabric (□ r =3) as substrate followed by a partial ground at the back of the substrate. The overall size of the proposed antenna is 45×38 mm 2 . The proposed antenna has a gain of 3.386 dB with VSWR of 1.07. The performance of the proposed antenna is analyzed under four angles of bending. The effect of change in feed length is also focused. The characteristics, low profile and compact size of the antenna depicts as a potential candidate for RFID application. CST Microwave Studio package is used for design and simulation purpose.
