Evolutionary coupling is defined as the implicit relationship between two or more software artifacts that are frequently changed together. In this study we investigate the effect of evolutionary coupling on defect proneness of a large financial legacy software in an industrial software development environment. We collected historical data for 5 years from 3 different software repositories containing 150 thousand files on 274 modules. Our results indicate that there is a positive correlation between evolutionary coupling and defect measures. Furthermore, we built linear and logistic regression models by using evolutionary coupling measures in order to explain defects. Although regression analysis results show that evolutionary coupling measures can be useful to explain defects, especially for modules in which high correlation is detected, explanatory power decreases dramatically with the decreasing correlation. © 2014 Authors.

The KM3NeT Collaboration runs a multi-site neutrino observatory in the Mediterranean Sea. Water Cherenkov particle detectors, deep in the sea and far off the coasts of France and Italy, are already taking data while incremental construction progresses. Data Acquisition Control software is operating off-shore detectors as well as testing and qualification stations for their components. The software, named Control Unit, is highly modular. It can undergo upgrades and reconfiguration with the acquisition running. Interplay with the central database of the Collaboration is obtained in a way that allows for data taking even if Internet links fail. In order to simplify the management of computing resources in the long term, and to cope with possible hardware failures of one or more computers, the KM3NeT Control Unit software features a custom dynamic resource provisioning and failover technology, which is especially important for ensuring continuity in case of rare transient events in multi-messenger astronomy. The software architecture relies on ubiquitous tools and broadly adopted technologies and has been successfully tested on several operating systems. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. KM3NeT is a research infrastructure located in the Mediterranean Sea, that will consist of two deep-sea Cherenkov neutrino detectors. With one detector (ARCA), the KM3NeT Collaboration aims at identifying and studying TeV-PeV astrophysical neutrino sources. With the other detector (ORCA), the neutrino mass ordering will be determined by studying GeV-scale atmospheric neutrino oscillations. The first KM3NeT detection units were deployed at the Italian and French sites between 2015 and 2017. In this paper, a description of the detector is presented, together with a summary of the procedures used to calibrate the detector in-situ. Finally, the dependence of muon rate between 2232−3386 m seawater dept. is compared with a parameterisation of the underwater muon flux. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Frequency regulation becomes a non-trivial issue due to an increase in renewable resources and power electronics-based loads. Direct load control (DLC), a strategy of autonomous demand response, has been applied to mitigate operational burdens on generation units for frequency regulation. Variable speed heat pumps (VSHPs) have been regarded as promising devices that can respond to the DLC signal updated every 2 or 4 seconds. This paper presents a dynamic model of the VSHP that is simplified for real-time simulation studies but still sufficiently comprehensive to analyze its physical and operational characteristics. Furthermore, a variable speed drive (VSD)-controlled induction motor model is designed together with an indirect torque controller for the adjustment of the VSHP input power. In addition, based on experimental setup and data, a test room was modeled to estimate the effect of the DLC-enabled VSHP on indoor temperature. Simulation case studies performed in Matlab/Simulink verify that the VSHP can be well utilized as DLC-enabled loads for frequency regulation while ensuring residents' comfort and long-term device performance.

The KM3NeT research infrastructure being built at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea will host water-Cherenkov telescopes for the detection of cosmic neutrinos. The neutrino telescopes will consist of large volume three-dimensional grids of optical modules to detect the Cherenkov light from charged particles produced by neutrino-induced interactions. Each optical module houses 31 3-inch photomultiplier tubes, instrumentation for calibration of the photomultiplier signal and positioning of the optical module and all associated electronics boards. By design, the total electrical power consumption of an optical module has been capped at seven watts. This paper presents an overview of the front-end and readout electronics system inside the optical module, which has been designed for a 1 ns synchronization between the clocks of all optical modules in the grid during a life time of at least 20 years. Semiconductor technology scaling makes chips more sensitive to faults. This paper describes the DeSyRe design approach and its runtime management for future reliable embedded Multiprocessor Systems-on-Chip (MPSoCs). A light weight runtime system is described for shared-memory MPSoCs to support fault-tolerant execution upon detection of transient and permanent faults. The DeSyRe runtime system offers re-execution of tasks that suffer from transient faults and task-migration in cases where a worker processor is permanently faulty. In addition, a faulty worker can potentially remain usable, increasing systems fault-tolerance. This is achieved using alternative task implementations, which avoid the faulty circuit and are indicated in the application-code via pragma annotations, as well as by repairing a faulty core via hardware reconfiguration. Thereby, the system can be dynamically adapted using one or multiple of the above mechanisms to mitigate faults. The DeSyRe runtime system is evaluated using micro-benchmarks running on a Virtex-6 FPGA MPSoC. Results suggest that our enhance default-tolerant runtime system can successfully and efficiently execute all application tasks under a variety of fault cases.

Recently, some approaches for supervised and unsupervised feature selection as a multi-objective optimization problem have been proposed. As the performance of unsupervised classification is evaluated through the quality of the obtained groups or clusters in the data set to be classified, it is difficult to define a suitable objective function that drives the selection of the features. Thus, several evaluation measures, and thus multi-objective clustering characterization, could provide a suitable set of features for unsupervised classification. In this paper, we consider the parallel implementation of a multi-objective feature selection that makes it possible to apply it to complex classification problems such as those having many features to select, and specifically high-dimensional data sets with much more features than data items. In this paper, we propose master-worker implementations of two different parallel evolutionary models, the parallel computation of the cost functions for the individuals in the population, and the parallel execution of evolutionary multi-objective procedures on subpopulations. The experiments accomplished on different benchmarks, including some related with feature selection in classification of EEG (Electroencephalogram) signals for BCI (Brain computer Interface) applications, show the benefits of parallel processing not only for decreasing the running time, but also for improving the solution quality.

This paper discusses a face image abstraction method by using SIFT features and Ford-Fulkerson algorithm. Ford-Fulkerson algorithm is used to compute the maximum flow in a flow network drawn on SIFT features extracted from a face image. The idea is to obtain an augmenting path which is a path from the source vertex to destination vertex with the available capacities on all edges along a set of paths and flow is calculated along one of these paths. The process is repeated until it is obtained more paths with the available capacities. At the initial stage, face image is characterized by SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) features and the keypoints descriptor information is taken as features set for further processing. Keypoints descriptor is used to generate several face representations by using a series of matrix operations which are further used to determine a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG). The resultant directed graph contains sparse and distinctive face characteristics of a subject from which the face image is captured. We then apply the Ford-Fulkerson algorithm on the directed graph to maintain the capacity constraints, skew symmetry and flow conservation to obtain an augmenting path with available capacities (relation between SIFT points). Finally, we obtain a mathematical representation of a face image and this representation is further encoded to be used as a set of distinctive features for matching. The time complexity of the proposed face abstraction algorithm is found to be O(VE 2 ) where V is the set of vertices and E is the set of edges in a directed graph.

This paper shows the stage of development of a Service Oriented architecture for Evolutionary Algorithms and the first results obtained in two different areas. The abstract architecture is presented, with its assocciated implementation using a widely used technology. Results attained in experiments with parameter adaptation in distributed heterogeneous machines are presented and the usage of the architecture in Evolutionary Art is also applied.
