There is a need to facilitate access to the required information in the web and adapting it to the users' preferences and requirements. This paper presents a system that, based on a collaborative filtering approach, adapts the web site to improve the browsing experience of the user: it generates automatically interesting links for new users. The system only uses the web log files stored in any web server (common log format) and builds user profiles from them combining machine learning techniques with a generalization process for data representation. These profiles are later used in an exploitation stage to automatically propose links to new users. The paper examines the effect of the parameters of the system on its final performance. Experiments show that the designed system performs efficiently in a database accessible from the web and that the use of a generalization process, specificity in profiles and the use of frequent pattern mining techniques benefit the profile generation phase, and, moreover, diversity seems to help in the exploitation phase. During the last decades, the information in the web has increased drastically but larger quantities of data do not provide perse added value for web visitors;there is a need for more efficient access to the required information and adaptation to user preferences or needs. The use of machine learning techniques to build user profiles allows to take into account users' real preferences. We present in this work a preliminary system, based on the collaborative filtering approach, to identify and generate interesting links for the users while they are navigating. The system uses only web navigation logs stored in any web server (according to the Common Log Format) and extracts information from them combining unsupervised and supervised classification techniques and frequent pattern mining techniques. It also includes a generalization procedure in the data preprocessing phase and in this work we analyze its effect on the final performance of the whole system. We also analyze the effect of the cold start (0 day problem) in the proposed system. The experiments show that the proposed generalization option improves the results of the designed system, which performs efficiently w.r.t. a web-accessible database and is even able to deal with the cold start problem.

This paper presents a way to improve the computation efficiency of exemplar-based inpainting approach in [4]. Note that the inpainting approach in [4] has computation redundancy in searching optimal patches in source region and updating fill front. A scheme to reduce source region and a modified scheme to update fill front are proposed. With the two schemes, better computation efficiency is expected. Several examples are given to justify the proposed fast inpainting approach and used to compare with the approach in [4]. The results indicate that the proposed approach has better computation efficiency than the approach in [4], as expected. Interesting enough, better visual quality of inpainted images is achieved by the proposed approach as well. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper describes the process of formalizing an existing, industrial domain specific language (DSL) that is based on the task-resource paradigm. Initially, the semantics of this DSL is defined informally and implicitly through an interpreter. The formalization starts by projecting the existing concrete syntax onto a formal abstract syntax that defines the language operators and process terms. Next, we define the dynamic operational semantics at the level of individual syntactical notions, using structural operational semantics (SOS) as a formal meta-language. Here, the impact of the formalization process on the DSL is considered in terms of disambiguation of underlying (semantic) language design decisions. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Web-based applications in computational medicine have become increasingly important during the last years. The rapid growth of the World Wide Web supposes a new paradigm in the telemedicine and eHealth areas in order to assist and enhance the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of patients. Furthermore, training of radiologists and management of medical databases are also becoming increasingly important issues in the field. In this paper, we present MammoApplet, an interactive Java applet interface designed as a web-based tool. It aims to facilitate the diagnosis of new mammographic cases by providing a set of image processing tools that allow a better visualization of the images, and a set of drawing tools, used to annotate the suspicious regions. Each annotation allows including the attributes considered by the experts when issuing the final diagnosis. The overall set of overlays is stored in a database as XML files associated with the original images. The final goal is to obtain a database of already diagnosed cases for training and enhancing the performance of novice radiologists.

The filter bank methods have been a popular non-parametric way of computing the complex amplitude spectrum. So far, the length of the filters in these filter banks has been set to some constant value independently of the data. In this paper, we take the first step towards considering the filter length as an unknown parameter. Specifically, we derive a very simple and approximate way of determining the optimal filter length in a data-adaptive way. Based on this analysis, we also derive a model averaged version of the forward and the forward-backward amplitude spectral Capon estimators. Through simulations, we show that these estimators significantly improve the estimation accuracy compared to the traditional Capon estimators.

We propose sparse approximation weighted regression (SPARROW), a method for local estimation of the regression function that uses sparse approximation with a dictionary of measurements. SPARROW estimates the regression function at a point with a linear combination of a few regressands selected by a sparse approximation of the point in terms of the regressors. We show SPARROW can be considered a variant of k-nearest neighbors regression (k-NNR), and more generally, local polynomial kernel regression. Unlike k-NNR, however, SPARROW can adapt the number of regressors to use based on the sparse approximation process. Our experimental results show the locally constant form of SPARROW performs competitively.

A trimaran is a multihulled boat consisting of a main hull and two smaller outrigger hulls, attached to the main hull with lateral struts. There have been many studies highlighting that a trimaran takes many advantages over other types of hulls especially the roll performance, because of the greater resistance to rolling that the outrigger hulls offer. In order to study the rolling motion of a trimaran, an accurate roll motion model is needed. The rolling motion of a trimaran is inherently nonlinear due to both nonlinearities in the restoring moment and damping moment. This paper presents an estimation method to predict the linear and nonlinear roll damping parameters based on free roll decay experiments of a trimaran, whose outrigger hulls are movable both along the longitudinal and transverse direction. The estimation method is based on least square support vector regression (LS-SVR) theory. In order to verify the performance of this new estimation method, the least square (LS) estimation method is also applied to identify the parameters. Both methods show satisfying performances, however models generated by LS-SVR shows less accumulated errors than models generated by LS.

In current Proteomics, prediction of protein-protein interactions (PPI) is a crucial aim as these interactions take part in most essential biological processes. In this paper, we propose a new approach to PPI dataset processing based on the extraction information from well-known databases and the application of data mining techniques. This approach will provide very accurate Support Vector Machine models, trained using high-confidence positive and negative examples. Finally, our proposed model has been validated using experimental, computational and literature-collected datasets. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
