A bidirectional transformation consists of a pair of unidirectional transformations: a forward transformation that maps one data structure called source to another called view, and a backward transformation that reflects changes in the view to the source. Bidirectional transformation has many useful applications such as replicated data synchronization, presentation-oriented editor development, and software artifact synchronization. In a previous work, we proposed a framework in which a backward transformation is automatically generated from a forward transformation by derivation of a complementary function if the forward transformation is given by a program in a simple functional language. However, the language has a severe restriction that no variable is allowed to be used more than once. In this paper, we show that tupling transformation relaxes this restriction, allowing us to handle a wider class of bidirectional transformations that may contain duplications.

Electromaj netically shielded rooms always have joints between the shielding materials. The simplest configuration is a lap joint in which overlapping sheets are fastened at regular intervals by screws or by other types of fasteners. The shielding effectiveness of such joints with slit-shaped apertures has riol been evaluat ed 'quant i tat i vely. Measurements of electi omagnetic wave leakage from slit shaped aoertures were made with the intent of determining the relationship between the joint configurations and shielding effectiveness. The results indicated that the shielding effectiveness is dependent on the wavelength and the dimensions of the constituent parts. Numerical analysis using the FDTD method whs carried out in order to explain the phenomena observed in the experiments. The data obtained through this study will be utilized in the future for quantitative evaluation of I he shielding effec: I i veness of slil shaped apertures.

Cellular Automata (CA) is a bio-inspired processing model for problem solving, initially proposed by Von Neumann. This approach modularizes the processing by dividing the solution into synchronous cells that change their states at the same time in order to get the solution. The communication between them is crucial to achieve the correct solution. On the other hand, the Address-Event-Representation (AER) is a neuromorphic communication protocol for transferring asynchronous events between VLSI chips. These neuro-inspired implementations have been used to design sensor chips (retina, cochleas), processing chips (convolutions, filters) and learning chips, which makes it possible to develop complex, multilayer, multichip neuromorphic systems. This paper presents the fusion of both bio-inspired solutions for implementing a vision filter based on 33 convolutions. The GLIDER software tool for developing CA has been used to implement the filter in VHDL and synthesize it into the Spartan II 200 of the USB-AER. © 2008 IEEE.

Research on knowledge acquisition method about the IF/THEN rules based on rough set theory

The basic principles of IF/THEN rules in rough set theory are analyzed first, and then the automatic process of knowledge acquisition is given. The numerical data is qualitatively processed by the classification of membership functions and membership degrees to get the normative decision table. The regular method of relations and the reduction algorithm of attributes are studied. The reduced relations are presented by the multi-representvalue method and its algorithm is offered. The whole knowledge acquisition process has high degree of automation and the extracted knowledge is true and reliable.

To efficiently and appropriately integrate daylighting strategies in their projects, building designers need reliable methods to address issues such as daily and seasonal variations or the balance between sufficient illumination with visual and thermal comfort aspects. This integration must also happen early in the design process to have a significant impact on energy savings and ultimate building performance. This paper proposes to address this need by fulfilling three major objectives: support the design process using a goal-oriented approach based on iterative design improvement suggestions;provide climate-based annual metrics in a visual and synthesized form;and relate quantitative and qualitative performance criteria thanks to a novel interface for browsing daylighting analysis data in various forms. A methodology to achieve these objectives is described here as the Lightsolve approach.

Research on robust, precise, and energy-efficient control methods for underwater robot manipulators will facilitate the future development of autonomous underwater vehicle-manipulator systems (AUVMS). In this research, we propose the development of a neural network-based controller for trajectory tracking of underwater robot manipulators. The design is based on a backpropagation-type three-layer neural network, is easy to implement, and is not dependent on knowledge of the system or environment dynamics. The practical effectiveness of the proposed controller is illustrated by results of experimental implementation for a prototype three-link underwater manipulator actuated by electric motors.

Software Product Line (SPL) engineering is one approach for addressing customization and variability for products. However, current approaches and research, while often addressing feature modeling and component variability, insufficiently address difficulties and additional complexity with respect to entity model variability, which negatively impacts various software qualities, such as correctness, reusability, maintainability, testability, and evolvability. This paper presents a solution approach with an integrated mechanism providing a consistent view to capture data variability in entity models, while hiding and decoupling components from superfluous data elements via adapter generation. An eHealth SPL case study is presented supporting adapter generation with differential entity conversion. The results show that with this approach, entity model variability can be effectively addressed and desirable software qualities preserved. © 2008 IEEE.

The development of Flight Control Systems (FCS) coupled with the availability of other Commercial Off-The Shelf (COTS) components is enabling the introduction of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) into the civil market. UAS have great potential to be used in a wide variety of civil applications such as environmental applications, emergency situations, surveillance tasks and more. In general, they are specially well suited for the so-called D-cube operations (Dirty, Dull or Dangerous). Current technology greatly facilitates the construction of UAS. Sophisticated flight control systems also make them accessible to end users with little aeronautical expertise. However, we believe that for its successful introduction into the civil market, progress needs to be made to deliver systems able to perform a wide variety of missions with minimal reconfiguration and with reduced operational costs. Most current flight plan specification mechanisms consist in a simple list of waypoints, an approach that has important limitations. This paper proposes a new specification mechanism with semantically richer constructs that will enable the end user to specify more complex flight plans. The proposed formalism provides means for specifying iterative behavior, conditional branching and other constructs to dynamically adapt the flight path to mission circumstances. Collaborating with the FCS, a new module on-board the UAS will be in charge of executing these plans. The paper also presents a prototype implementation of this module and the results obtained in simulations. © 2008 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

Flight dispatching is the set of tasks related to flight preparation, such as load and balance, meteorology study and briefing, operational flight planning, contingency analysis and planning, etc. The flight dispatcher must be in close contact with the pilot in command in order to verify that the airplane is airworthy, furnishing all kinds of information needed to properly operate the system. The advent of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) operating on civil missions will require developing new dispatching processes that take into account the main role of these vehicles: the mission. Traditional aviation focuses on point to point transportation of passengers and/or cargo. However, UAVs usually focus on surveillance applications that require large sets of sensors and complementary avionics to properly develop their assigned task. This paper presents the design of a new dispatching methodology focused for UAV civil applications. The overall process is mission-centric, focusing on all the requirements needed to properly implement the assigned tasks, but also integrating the traditional dispatching requirements of manned aircraft. The proposed dispatching process is built upon a specific UAV mission architecture, the Unmanned Service architecture (USAL). Based on this architecture a methodology is introduced to characterize the mission objectives, the UAV airframe and its various characteristics, the software services required for managing the flight and the mission, the sensor and computational payload, etc. All these elements are combined together in an iterative dispatching flow. The result of the process is the actual UAV configuration in terms of fuel, electrical system, payload configuration, flight plan, etc;but also detailed flight plan, alternative routes and landing sites, detailed USAL service architecture and even contingency planning. © 2008 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

Power consumption in scan-based testing is a major concern nowadays. In this paper, we present a new X-filling technique to reduce both shift power and capture power during scan tests, namely LSC-filling. The basic idea is to use as few as possible X-bits to keep the capture power under the peak power limit of the circuit under test (CUT), while using the remaining X-bits to reduce the shift power to cut down the CUT's average power consumption during scan tests as much as possible. In addition, by carefully selecting the X-filling order, our X-filling technique is able to achieve lower capture power when compared to existing methods. Experimental results on ISCAS'89 benchmark circuits show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. ©2008 IEEE.
