Flight dispatching is the set of tasks related to flight preparation, such as load and balance, meteorology study and briefing, operational flight planning, contingency analysis and planning, etc. The flight dispatcher must be in close contact with the pilot in command in order to verify that the airplane is airworthy, furnishing all kinds of information needed to properly operate the system. The advent of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) operating on civil missions will require developing new dispatching processes that take into account the main role of these vehicles: the mission. Traditional aviation focuses on point to point transportation of passengers and/or cargo. However, UAVs usually focus on surveillance applications that require large sets of sensors and complementary avionics to properly develop their assigned task. This paper presents the design of a new dispatching methodology focused for UAV civil applications. The overall process is mission-centric, focusing on all the requirements needed to properly implement the assigned tasks, but also integrating the traditional dispatching requirements of manned aircraft. The proposed dispatching process is built upon a specific UAV mission architecture, the Unmanned Service architecture (USAL). Based on this architecture a methodology is introduced to characterize the mission objectives, the UAV airframe and its various characteristics, the software services required for managing the flight and the mission, the sensor and computational payload, etc. All these elements are combined together in an iterative dispatching flow. The result of the process is the actual UAV configuration in terms of fuel, electrical system, payload configuration, flight plan, etc;but also detailed flight plan, alternative routes and landing sites, detailed USAL service architecture and even contingency planning. © 2008 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

Power consumption in scan-based testing is a major concern nowadays. In this paper, we present a new X-filling technique to reduce both shift power and capture power during scan tests, namely LSC-filling. The basic idea is to use as few as possible X-bits to keep the capture power under the peak power limit of the circuit under test (CUT), while using the remaining X-bits to reduce the shift power to cut down the CUT's average power consumption during scan tests as much as possible. In addition, by carefully selecting the X-filling order, our X-filling technique is able to achieve lower capture power when compared to existing methods. Experimental results on ISCAS'89 benchmark circuits show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. ©2008 IEEE.

Many parallel computers use Tori interconnection networks. Machines from Cray, HP and IBM, among others, exploit these topologies. In order to maintain full network symmetry, 2D and 3D Tori (k-ary 2-cubes and k-ary 3-cubes) must have the same number of nodes (k) per dimension resulting in square or cubic topologies. Nevertheless, for practical reasons, computer engineers have designed and built 2D and 3D Tori having a different number of nodes per dimension. These mixed-radix topologies are not edge-symmetric which translates into poor performance provoked by an unbalanced use of the network links. In this paper, we propose and analyze twisted 2D and 3D Tori which remove the network bottlenecks present in mixed-radix standard Tori. These new topologies recover edge-symmetry and, consequently, balance the utilization of their links. We describe the distance-related parameters of these twisted networks and use simulation to asses their performance under synthetic loads. The obtained results show noticeable and consistent performance gains (up to a 88% increase in accepted load). In addition, we propose scalable and practicable packet routing and folding techniques for these interconnection subsystems. The complexity of the resulting architectural solutions is similar to the one exhibited by traditional routing and folding mechanisms employed in standard Tori. This fact together with the performance improvements obtained could justify the use of these twisted topologies in the future. © 2007 IEEE.

This paper deals with the use of parallel processing for multi-objective optimization in applications in which the objective functions, the restrictions, and hence also the solutions can change over time. These dynamic optimization problems appear in quite different real-world applications with relevant socio-economic impact. The procedure here presented is based on PSFGA, a parallel evolutionary procedure for multi-objective optimization. It uses a master process that distributes the population among the processors in the system (that evolve their corresponding solutions according to an island model), and collects and adjusts the set of local Pareto fronts found by each processor (this way, the master also allows an implicit communication among islands). Moreover, the procedure exclusively uses non-dominated individuals for the selection and variation, and maintains the diversity of the approximation to the Pareto front by using a strategy based on a crowding distance. © 2007 IEEE.

Convergence of the emerging IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) includes unlicensed, nondedicated and nondeterministic, hence uncontrollable, computer access networks for IP multimedia services. It enables provision of resource demanding real-time services and multimedia communication raising new end-to-end Quality-of-Service (QoS) challenges, for which quality adaptation using resource management is proposed as a solution in this paper. This is an integrated solution taking both IMS and computer access networks into account as well as the two end-devices and the application servers (AS) involved in communication. The best user experience is targeted under real-time variation of available network (e.g. bandwidth, buffer space) and end-device (e.g. battery, CPU, memory, storage) resources throughout a session. The multimedia content is dynamically adapted to fit the resource availability variations, achieving maximum system (i.e. network and end-devices) resource utilization and enhanced QoS. The resource availability update signalling is carried over Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) during the session. This is work in progress. © 2007 IEEE.

The basic principles of IF/THEN rules in rough set theory are analyzed first, and then the automatic process of knowledge acquisition is given. The numerical data is qualitatively processed by the classification of membership functions and membership degrees to get the normative decision table. The regular method of relations and the reduction algorithm of attributes are studied. The reduced relations are presented by the multi-represent-value method and its algorithm is offered. The whole knowledge acquisition process has high degree of automation and the extracted knowledge is true and reliable.

Public spaces are changing from being ungoverned places for interaction to be more formalized, controlled, less interactive, and designed places aimed at fulfilling a purpose. Simultaneously, new personal mobile technology aims at providing private individual spaces in the public domain. In this paper we explore the implications of interacting in public space and how technology can be rethought to not only act as personal devices, but be the tool to reclaim the right and possibility to interact in public spaces. We introduce information exchange, social support and regulation as three central aspects for reclaiming public space. The PhotoSwapper application is presented as an example of a system designed to integrate pervasive technology in a public setting. The system is strongly inspired by the activities at a traditional market place. Based on the design of the application we discuss four design challenges when designing for public interaction. Detecting the presence of speech in a noisy signal is an unsolved problem affecting numerous speech processing applications. This paper shows an effective method employing support vector machines (SVM) for voice activity detection (VAD) in noisy environments. The use of kernels in SVM enables to map the data into some other dot product space (called feature space) via a nonlinear transformation. The feature vector includes the subband signal-to-noise ratios of the input speech and a radial basis function (RBF) kernel is used as SVM model. It is shown the ability of the proposed method to learn how the signal is masked by the acoustic noise and to define an effective non-linear decision rule. The proposed approach shows clear improvements over standardized VADs for discontinuous speech transmission and distributed speech recognition, and other recently reported VADs. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Transitivity is an important property used in logical reasoning. However, Part-Whole (PW) relations usually do not satisfy the property. Wiston and Odell partitioned PW relations into six sub-PW relations respectively, such that the transitivity property is held in each sub-class and each different sub-PW denotes a kind of PW relations with special meanings. This paper studies the composition of different sub-PW relations given by Wiston and Odell in following three aspects: (1) Does the composition relation of two different sub-PW relations make sense?(2) Is the transitivity still held for the composition relations of two different sub-PW relations;(3) which sub-PW class does the composition relation belong to. Different from former study, a formal discussion is carried for above issues. © 2006 IEEE.
