This paper describes experimental results achieved applying artificial neural networks (NNs) trying to perform force/position control of a real scara manipulator robot. The general control strategy consists of a neural controller that operates in parallel with a conventional controller based on feedback error learning architecture. There are used two NNs: one for the position loop control and another to the force loop control based on the structure knew as hybrid force/position control. The main purpose was lets the NNs compensates dynamical effects that arises when a manipulator is in contact with an environment. Successfully results have achieved for the position loop control but practical problems was observed related to force loop control using NNs even with different sets of input data for this NN. Practical problems are discussed.

This paper describes experimental results applying artificial neural networks to perform the position control of a real scara manipulator robot. The general control strategy consists of a neural controller that operates in parallel with a conventional controller based on the feedback error learning architecture. The main advantage of this architecture is that it does not require any modification of the previous conventional controller algorithm. MLP and RBF neural networks trained online have been used, without requiring any previous knowledge about the system to be controlled. The approach has performed very successfully, with better results obtained with the RBF networks when compared to PID and sliding mode positional controllers.

This paper presents a new index to evaluate a distorted signal under unbalanced and harmonic conditions. This criterion is called total harmonic and unbalanced distortion (THUD) which can be used to calculate the amount of harmonics and unbalance of voltage, current and power waveforms. Whereas conventional factors such as V/V+ and THD are fairly incomplete to express the total distortion of a signal in both harmonic and unbalanced environments, the use of alternative factors in such cases seems to be mandatory. It is demonstrated that the proposed voltage total harmonic and unbalanced distortion (VTHUD) along with voltage total harmonic distortion (VTHD) and voltage total unbalanced distortion (VTUD) are appropriate factors to achieve to this purpose. Furthermore, THUD is an extensive factor to compare two distorted environments from aspect of power quality issues.

Building a model of gas concentrations has important industrial and environmental applications, and mobile robots on their own or in cooperation with stationary sensors play an important role in this task. Since an exact analytical description of turbulent flow remains an intractable problem, we propose an approximate approach which not only estimates the concentrations but also their variances for each location. Our point of view is that of sequential Bayesian estimation given a lattice of 2D cells treated as hidden variables. We first discuss how a simple Kalman filter provides a solution to the estimation problem. To overcome the quadratic computational complexity with the mapped area exhibited by a straighforward application of Kalman filtering, we introduce a sparse implementation which runs in constant time. Experimental results for a real robot validate the proposed method. Copyright 2013 ACM.
