This paper presents an investigation into fault tolerance for the fine-grained parallel algorithm for computing an incomplete LU factorization. Results concerning the convergence of the algorithm with respect to the occurrence of faults, and the impact of any sub-optimality in the produced incomplete factors in Krylov subspace solvers are given. Numerical tests show that the simple algorithmic changes suggested here can ensure convergence of the fine-grained parallel incomplete factorization, and improve the performance of the use of the resulting factors as preconditioners in Krylov subspace solvers if faults do occur. ©2017 Society for Modeling & Simulation International (SCS).

Inferring human activities using robust privileged probabilistic learning

Classification models may often suffer from "structure imbalance" between training and testing data that may occur due to the deficient data collection process. This imbalance can be represented by the learning using privileged information (LUPI) paradigm. In this paper, we present a supervised probabilistic classification approach that integrates LUPI into a hidden conditional random field (HCRF) model. The proposed model is called LUPI-HCRF and is able to cope with additional information that is only available during training. Moreover, the proposed method employes Student's t-distribution to provide robustness to outliers by modeling the conditional distribution of the privileged information. Experimental results in three publicly available datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach and improve the state-of-the-art in the LUPI framework for recognizing human activities. We report the detection of GJ 3090 b (TOI-177.01), a mini-Neptune on a 2.9-day orbit transiting a bright (K = 7.3 mag) M2 dwarf located at 22 pc. The planet was identified by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite and was confirmed with the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher radial velocities. Seeing-limited photometry and speckle imaging rule out nearby eclipsing binaries. Additional transits were observed with the LCOGT, Spitzer, and ExTrA telescopes. We characterise the star to have a mass of 0.519 ± 0.013 M and a radius of 0.516 ± 0.016 R . We modelled the transit light curves and radial velocity measurements and obtained a planetary mass of 3.34 ± 0.72 ME, a radius of 2.13 ± 0.11 RE, and a mean density of 1.89+−005245 g/cm3. The low density of the planet implies the presence of volatiles, and its radius and insolation place it immediately above the radius valley at the lower end of the mini-Neptune cluster. A coupled atmospheric and dynamical evolution analysis of the planet is inconsistent with a pure H-He atmosphere and favours a heavy mean molecular weight atmosphere. The transmission spectroscopy metric of 221+−6646 means that GJ 3090 b is the second or third most favourable mini-Neptune after GJ 1214 b whose atmosphere may be characterised. At almost half the mass of GJ 1214 b, GJ 3090 b is an excellent probe of the edge of the transition between super-Earths and mini-Neptunes. We identify an additional signal in the radial velocity data that we attribute to a planet candidate with an orbital period of 13 days and a mass of 17.1+−8392 ME, whose transits are not detected. © 2022, CC BY.

Maintaining phosphoric slurry within the optimal temperature range is of great significance in improving the quality of the phosphoric acid product. Due to the lack of integral parts and the limited number of expert rules, general fuzzy controllers are commonly incapable of achieving accurate output. This paper proposed a novel fuzzy controller based on variable universes of discourse (VUD) to improve the accuracy of the temperature of phosphoric slurry. By tuning the motorized motor in the vacuum pump, the controller can obtain an appropriate vacuum degree in flash evaporators. With the online operation of contraction-expansion factors, fuzzy rules can be reproduced online, which is equivalent to the densification of fuzzy sets on universes of discourse. Thus, the output accuracy of VUD fuzzy controllers can be enhanced significantly. The experimental results show that VUD fuzzy controllers can tune the temperature of phosphoric slurry to within the optimal range and have a much better effect than general fuzzy controllers. © 2016 SERSC.

The inverse problem of electrocardiography is ill-posed. Errors in the model such as signal noise can impact the accuracy of reconstructed cardiac electrical activity. It is currently not known how sensitive the inverse problem is to signal processing techniques. To evaluate this, experimental data from a Langendorff-perfused pig heart (n=1) suspended in a human-shaped torsotank was used. Different signal processing methods were applied to torso potentials recorded from 128 electrodes embedded in the tank surface. Processing methods were divided into three categories (i) high-frequency noise removal (ii) baseline drift removal and (iii) signal averaging, culminating in n=72 different signal sets. For each signal set, the inverse problem was solved and reconstructed signals were compared to those directly recorded by the sock around the heart. ECG signal processing methods had a dramatic effect on reconstruction accuracy. In particular, removal of baseline drift significantly impacts the magnitude of reconstructed electrograms, while the presence of high-frequency noise impacts the activation time derived from these signals (p

Too much stress is easy to do harm to the physical and psychological health of teenagers, because most teenagers neither have the ability to cope with the stress by themselves nor like seeking adults' help initiatively. Social media has demonstrated its feasibility in detecting teenagers' stress with the micro-blog having become a popular channel for teenagers' self-expression. In this demonstration, we present a system called tPredictor, which can predict teenagers' future stress based on the social media micro-blog. Two questions are to be resolved: (1) what will the stress level of the teenager(s) be in the next time unit? (2) how will the stress level of the teenager(s) change (increase, decrease, remain unchanged) in the next time unit? tPredictor tackles the above prediction questions, taking into account the influence of future stressful events on teenagers' emotion. Considering the similarity of stock price movement and the stress level change, we define the stress candlestick charts and the stress reversal signals for stress change trend prediction. tPredictor can predict the stress of both individuals and a group of teenagers, which provides a platform for teenagers themselves, their parents or some institutions such as schools to know teenagers' future stress for taking measures timely to prevent the serious consequences. © 2016, Copyright is with the authors.

We report the discovery and orbital characterization of three new transiting warm giant planets. These systems were initially identified as presenting single transit events in the light curves generated from the full frame images of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Follow-up radial velocity measurements and additional light curves were used to determine the orbital periods and confirm the planetary nature of the candidates. The planets orbit slightly metal-rich late F- and early G-type stars. We find that TOI 4406b has a mass of MP= 0.30 ± 0.04 MJ, a radius of RP= 1.00± 0.02 RJ, and a low eccentricity orbit (e=0.15±0.05) with a period of P= 30.08364± 0.00005 d TOI 2338b has a mass of MP= 5.98±0.20 MJ, a radius of RP= 1.00±0.01 RJ, and a highly eccentric orbit (e= 0.676 ± 0.002 ) with a period of P= 22.65398 ± 0.00002 d. Finally, TOI 2589b has a mass of MP= 3.50±0.10 MJ, a radius of RP= 1.08±0.03 RJ, and an eccentric orbit (e = 0.522±0.006 ) with a period of P= 61.6277 ± 0.0002 d. TOI 4406b and TOI 2338b are enriched in metals compared to their host stars, while the structure of TOI 2589b is consistent with having similar metal enrichment to its host star. © 2023, CC BY.

The Twitter Bullishness Index (TBI) has previously been reported to be a social media analytics indicator for the stock market. We explore the different components that shape the TBI. First, we determine the users to be dominated by the US and the Englishspeaking world. Second, we applied the Natural Language Processing tool term frequency-inverse document frequency (TFIDF) to explore the tweet content that contribute to the TBI. We revealed that the keyword lexicon associated with the terms bullish and bearish differs. Finally, we used the vector autoregression framework. Our results do not show the TBI to be a leading indicator for the returns of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) within statistical significance. However, a Pearson correlation of 0.49 is observed between the TBI and the DJIA return. © ACM 2016.
