We study the problem of answering queries given a set of mappings between peer ontologies. In addition to the schema mapping between peer ontologies, there are axioms to give constraints to classes and properties. We propose a set of rules to build graphs for the axioms. Because the axioms have different properties, the generated graphs are classified into four sets. In each peer, its RDF/OWL query languages can support regular expressions. If it wants to be transitive along semantic paths in peer knowledge management systems, we must rewrite conjunctive and disjunctive queries between peers. Because conjunctive queries are well-understood, we focus on a novel algorithm to rewrite disjunctive queries along semantic paths based on the graphs. For all atoms of a disjunctive query, we consider its union as a set and find the maximum rewritings over peers through a graphical way. Finally we do extensive simulation experiments. The simulation results show our algorithm can generate more rewritings than the naive rewriting algorithm at each distance. © 2007 IEEE.

Damage tolerant and fail safe structures must be designed such that progressive failure of a structure after initial damage is stable and predictable. This requires optimizing the design to have robust progressive failure response after initial damage that is insensitive to small variations in design variables and loads. Using probabilistic approaches in design optimization for predictable and robust progressive failure is expensive and does not provide insight into the underlying physics and mechanisms that lead to poor predictability. In this paper, we investigate the progressive failure of truss structures and identify features that lead to robust and non-robust progressive failure. These characteristics are quantified and used as surrogate deterministic measures to optimize for robust and predictable progressive failure. Optimization with surrogate measures leads to designs with high energy absorption, predictable failure sequence and robust energy absorption.

Real-time fusion of data collected from a variety of colocated radars that acquire information in a cooperative manner from multiple perspectives and/or different frequencies, is being shown to provide a more accurate and effective way of tracking complex targets in a multi-target scenario. This is more advantageous than employing a single radar or a group of radars operating independently. This paper describes a cooperative multi-sensor approach in which multiple radars operate together in a non-interference limited manner. A three-fold approach is presented: (i) applying multiobjective joint optimization algorithms to set limits on the operational parameters of the radars to preclude electromagnetic interference;(ii) measuring and processing radar returns in a shared manner for target feature extraction based on electromagnetic diversity principles in conjunction with target scattering cross sections;and (iii) employing feature-aided track/fusion algorithms to detect, discriminate, and follow real targets from clutter noise. The results of computer simulations are provided that demonstrate the advantages of this approach. © 2007 IEEE.

In this article, we analyze the morphometric measures of dendrite spines of mice derived from electron tomography images for different spine types based on pre-assigned categories. The morphometric measures we consider include the metric distance, volume, surface area, and length of dendrite spines of mice. The question of interest is how these morphometric measures differ by condition of mice;and how the metric distance relates to volume, surface area, length, and condition of mice. The Large Deformation Diffeomorphic Metric Mapping algorithm is the tool we use to obtain the metric distances that quantize the morphometry of binary images of dendrite spines with respect to a template spine. We demonstrate that for the values not adjusted for scale metric distances and other morphometric measures are significantly different between the conditions. The morphometric measures (rather than the mice condition) explain almost all the variation in metric distances. Since size (or scale) dominates the other variables in variation, we adjust metric distances and other morphometric measures for scale. We demonstrate that the scaled metric distances and other scaled morphometric variables still differ for condition, and scaled metric distances depend most significantly on scaled morphometric measures. The methodology used is also valid for morphometric measures of other organs or tissues and metric distances other than LDDMM.

Recently, it has been widely recognized that control and mechanical systems cannot be designed separately due to their tight interdependency. However, there still leaves much to be understood about 1) how the relationship between control and mechanical systems should be;and 2) what does the well-balanced coupling between these two systems bring to resulting behavior? In light of these facts, as an initial step toward this goal, this paper intensively discusses the coupling from the view point of the temporal contribution of control and mechanical systems to the resulting behavior, employing a simple pseudo-passive dynamic walking biped as a practical example. Preliminary results support that discrete control strategy, which effectively exploits diversity of motion trajectory, enables to enhance the robustness against external perturbation. To the best of our knowledge, this has never been explicitly discussed so far. Based on these results, this study proposes a Pulsed-CPG that allows us to achieve the appropriate coupling between control and mechanical systems as well as to change the brain-body interaction adaptively according to the situation encountered.

Hydrocarbon microseepage theory establishes a cause-and-effect relation between oil and gas reservoirs and special surface anomalies, mainly including surface hydrocarbons and related mineral alterations. Thus, diagnostic spectral features of hydrocarbons and mineral alterations are capable of providing reliable evidences for the oil and gas exploration. In the paper, the integrated practical system of exploring for oil, gas is introduced by using reflectance spectroscopy and hydrocarbon microseepage theory. This system is applied to processing and analyzing not only hyperspectral remote sensing data but also the data provided by field work. Furthermore, great efforts are focused on spectral model of hydrocarbon microseepage and Hyperion data classification algorithms. In our work, two exploration targets of natural gas are identified from the study area which covers 2100 km 2 . All the two exploration targets have been proven industrial reserves by China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) in July 2006.

Mendel's Accountant (hereafter referred to as "Mendel") is a user-friendly biologically realistic simulation program for investigating the processes of mutation and selection in sexually reproducing diploid populations. Mendel represents an advance over previous forward-time programs in that it incorporates several new features that enhance biological realism including: (a) variable mutation effect and (b) environmental variance that affects phenotype. In Mendel, as in nature, mutations have a continuous range of effect from lethal to beneficial, and may vary in expression from fully dominant to fully recessive. Mendel allows mutational effects to be combined in either a multiplicative or additive manner to determine overall genotypic fitness and provides the option of either truncation or probability selection. Environmental variance is specified via a heritability parameter and a non-scaling noise standard deviation. Mendel is computationally efficient, so many problems of interest can be run on ordinary personal computers. Parallelized using MPI, Mendel readily handles large population size and population substructure on cluster computers. We report a series of validation experiments which show consistently that Mendel results conform to theoretical predictions. Its graphical user interface is designed to make problem specification intuitive and simple, and it provides a variety of visual representations in the program output. The program is a versatile research tool and is useful also as an interactive teaching resource. © 2007 SWPS.

Ergodicity in natural earthquake fault networks

Numerical simulations have shown that certain driven nonlinear systems can be characterized by mean-field statistical properties often associated with ergodic dynamics [C. D. Ferguson, W. Klein, and J. B. Rundle, Phys. Rev. E 60, 1359 (1999); D. Egolf, science 287, 101 (2000)]. These driven mean-field threshold systems feature long-range interactions and can be treated as equilibriumlike systems with statistically stationary dynamics over long time intervals. Recently the equilibrium property of ergodicity was identified in an earthquake fault system, a natural driven threshold system, by means of the Thirumalai-Mountain (TM) fluctuation metric developed in the study of diffusive systems [K. F. Tiampo, J. B. Rundle, W. Klein, J. S. Sá Martins, and C. D. Ferguson, Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 238501 (2003)]. We analyze the seismicity of three naturally occurring earthquake fault networks from a variety of tectonic settings in an attempt to investigate the range of applicability of effective ergodicity, using the TM metric and other related statistics. Results suggest that, once variations in the catalog data resulting from technical and network issues are accounted for, all of these natural earthquake systems display stationary periods of metastable equilibrium and effective ergodicity that are disrupted by large events. We conclude that a constant rate of events is an important prerequisite for these periods of punctuated ergodicity and that, while the level of temporal variability in the spatial statistics is the controlling factor in the ergodic behavior of seismic networks, no single statistic is sufficient to ensure quantification of ergodicity. Ergodicity in this application not only requires that the system be stationary for these networks at the applicable spatial and temporal scales, but also implies that they are in a state of metastable equilibrium, one in which the ensemble averages can be substituted for temporal averages in studying their spatiotemporal evoluti
