Studying the impact of climate change on wintertime polar stratosphere is of particular relevance not only for climate knowledge but also for tropospheric projections. Machine learning provides a way to extract information from different climate models and combine the data in a such way that patterns are clearer, so predictions can be inducted. The methods used in this study have been region growing algorithm, K-means and combination of predictions. The final results show three clusters of response trends for the intensity and location of the stratospheric polar night jet. The prediction shows an increase in zonal wind intensity over the 2xCO2 and 4xCO2 concentration points and a decrease in the related latitude. Our methods can be extended for more climate models and simulation periods, and will allow not only to map the behavior of the polar night jet, but other stratospheric and tropospheric features and interactions between them. ©2020 Society for Modeling & Simulation International (SCS)

Modelling and control of a Flexible Floating Boom: First Approach

Floating booms are useful tools in the marine world, especially for marine demarcation where some kind of contamination of sea, ocean or coastal water is present. In this work we have developed a mathematical model for a flexible floating boom which is hooked on two boats (unmanned surface vehicles). It is meant to be used for oil spill containment in marine areas. In order to simplify the model and to make possible its computer simulation, we have adopted a quasi-static approximation where we assume that the inertial forces are small compared to the drag forces applied to the boom. The simulation of this mathematical model has allowed the analysis of the behavior of the floating boom. Based on this knowledge, we have designed a control system which allows us to maintain the flexible floating boom in a specific configuration by controlling its shape. For that purpose, the control approach deals with the speed of the two ends of the floating boom. The results obtained with the implemented control system are encouraging, considering the model is a simplified discrete one and the control effort is reasonable. © 2017

Classification techniques based on Artificial Intelligence are computational tools that have been applied to detection of intrusions (IDS) with encouraging results. They are able to solve problems related to information security in an efficient way. The intrusion detection implies the use of huge amount of information. For this reason heuristic methodologies have been proposed. In this paper, decision trees, Naive Bayes, and supervised classifying systems UCS, are combined to improve the performance of a classifier. In order to validate the system, a scenario based on real data of the NSL-KDD99 dataset is used. © 2014 IEEE.

We solve the problem of petroleum products distribution through oil pipelines networks. This problem is modelled and solved using two techniques: A heuristic method like a multiobjective evolutionary algorithm and Mathematical Programming. In the multiobjective evolutionary algorithm, several objective functions are defined to express the goals of the solutions as well as the preferences among them. Some constraints are included as hard objective functions and some are evaluated through a repairing function to avoid infeasible solutions. In the Mathematical Programming approach the multiobjective optimization is solved using the Constraint Method in Mixed Integer Linear Programming. Some constraints of the mathematical model are nonlinear, so they are linearized. The results obtained with both methods for one concrete network are presented. They are compared with a hybrid solution, where we use the results obtained by Mathematical Programming as the seed of the evolutionary algorithm.

This paper shows the advantage of using Intelligent Systems while developing engineering projects. The paper is based on three examples and it is focus into one of them: The Elearning Migration application, developed as a teaching aid tool in different organizations where various platforms coexist;this is the case of some Spanish universities. This tool solves three basic problems, which are shown in three independent modules. The first of these ones, concerns the recording and migration of the data;the second one, refers to the storing and organization of the images. The last one is an E-learning platform recommender based on an ID3 tree-decision. We are going to focus our article in this concrete module. ©2010 IEEE.

Virtual Screening (VS) methods can considerably aid drug discovery research, predicting how ligands interact with drug targets. BINDSURF is an efficient and fast blind VS methodology for the determination of protein binding sites, depending on the ligand, using the massively parallel architecture of graphics processing units(GPUs) for fast unbiased prescreening of large ligand databases. In this contribution, we provide a performance/cost model for the execution of this application on both local system and public cloud infrastructures. With our model, it is possible to determine which is the best infrastructure to use in terms of execution time and costs for any given problem to be solved by BINDSURF. Conclusions obtained from our study can be extrapolated to other GPU-based VS methodologies. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Event-based selective control strategy for raceway reactor: A simulation study

This work presents a simulation study of an event-based selective control strategy for a raceway reactor. The control system aims are to maintain simultaneously a pH and dissolved oxygen within specific limits. In the analyzed control scheme, the pH value is prioritized over the dissolved oxygen, since it has a critical influence on the process performance. Besides, the dissolved oxygen also influences the photosynthesis rate and should be kept within the limits. The control structure is evaluated through simulation, where a nonlinear model for microalgae culture in the raceway photobioreactor is used. Analysis of different configurations allows to determine the most adequate control system setup to achieve the desired goals. The obtained results show that combination of an event-based approach with selective control allows to increase the overall productivity as well as to address effective CO2utilization and aeration system energy minimization. © 2016

The last six years has seen Moore's Law continue to produce incredible gains in computational power. Indeed, the November, 2007 list of the top ten fastest supercomputers in the world contained no machines with acceleration of any kind. The same list six years later has four of the ten fastest supercomputers using accelerators, including the top two machines [3] . And the ten greenest supercomputers in November 2013 are using NVIDIA GPUs [1]. This heterogeneity of processing units is present from the top of the computational power spectrum down to the bottom, where GPU hardware coupled with novel CUDA and OpenCL programming paradigms have brought significant performance gains to consumer-grade applications. The way of thinking on Big Data, Open Data and their use by organizations or individuals has been a trending topic over the last few years. Big Data deals with collecting, storing, analyzing and putting data in value. Big, medium and small enterprises want to include information technologies in their management and decision processes. At the same time, movements about rights on public data have increased their presence and force. Data from governments must be open. Every day, more and more cities and countries are opening their data. Open Data has emerged as a new paradigm for the public service provision model with a special role in Smart City. The main goal of Big and Open Data in a Smart City is to develop systems which can be useful for citizens. In this work we analyze how both private enterprises and governments manage to improve their data value by combining private and public datasets and we give some examples of our work in this area. © 2015 IEEE.
