Migraine is one of the most disabling neurological diseases. Its prevalence reaches 15% of the population in developed countries and lead to high economic costs for private and national health systems. There is no cure for the migraine yet. Objective and accurate migraine prediction turns necessary in order to increase the effectiveness of the current treatments. To tackle this problem authors demonstrated in previous works the feasibility of the migraine modeling and presented a DEVS-based model for migraine prediction in a real time framework. This work presents the first step to bring migraine predictive models and simulations to real devices for the first time in the literature. To do this, the DEVS-based model has been ported to a robust hardware description language (VHDL) to be implemented into a FPGA. This paper leads to the final stage: the physical implementation of a predictive migraine monitoring device. © 2018 Society for Modeling & Simulation International (SCS).

We propose an evolutionary flow for finite state machine in- ference through the cooperation of grammatical evolution and a genetic algorithm. This coevolution has two main ad- vantages. First, a high-level description of the target prob- lem is accepted by the flow, being easier and affordable for system designers. Second, the designer does not need to de- fine a training set of input values because it is automatically generated by the genetic algorithm at run time. Our exper- iments on the sequence recognizer and the vending machine problems obtained the FSM solution in 99.96% and 100% of the optimization runs, respectively.

This work presents a strategy to track and describe the boundary of an environmental surface using a sequence of incomplete boundary images coming from an UAV with a camera onboard. The algorithm uses all captured images to feed the trajectory, which drives the UAV towards the next point to take the next shot, until the identification is completed. The multiple patterns of the input image make the problem difficult. Our approach orders the points of the image to identify the existent edges, and computes the trajectory as a minimization problem using a multi-objective function that gathers information about the boundary and the polynomial that fit in these edges.

The natural progression from classic Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methodologies to Modeling and Simulation-Based Systems Engineering (M&SBSE) brings the need for more flexible and powerful validation tools. Completing the structure and descriptions of static models with self-diagnosis greatly facilitates the development, implementation, and validation of complex models. However, current simulation development environments and libraries often lack providing complete tools to validate these complex models straightforwardly and with the proper level of detail. In this article, we tackle this issue transferring one of the traditional software testing methods, unit testing, to the modeling and simulation field. To this end, we integrate a unit-testing method to the DEVS methodology, allowing the specification of expected states, outcomes, and behaviors of the simulation modules in an XML-based syntax, in all the levels of the hierarchical design. As a result, this methodology enables the generation of powerful and easy-readable verification files. ©2020 Society for Modeling & Simulation International (SCS)

Three-dimensional Network-on-Chip systems are becoming popular because of reduced communication delay, heterogeneous integration of different technologies in a single chip, high yield, reduced latency, and less consumption of interconnect power. However, the addition of functional units in the Z-direction has resulted in higher on-chip temperature and appearance of hot spots on the die. Liquid channel cooling has emerged as an efficient and scalable solution for 3-D NoC. This paper proposed a placement strategy of liquid micro-channels in the chip using the genetic algorithm. The proposed liquid cooling approach is independent of any topology. By performing an extensive set of experiments, the result shows a substantial decrease in peak on-chip temperature. © 2017 Society for Modeling & Simulation International (SCS).

Since the world presents a dynamically changing environment, we need synthetic systems that can process and respond to motion. The main contribution of this work is the efficient implementation of a biologically inspired DSP architecture for gradient motion estimation that borrows nature templates as inspiration and makes use of an specific model of human visual motion perception: Multi Channel Gradient Model. This model can be enhanced using psychophysical and bioinspired properties according to biological vision in order to mimic the behavior and the performance of the mammalians. The architecture is designed with an asynchronous pipeline, chaining several signal processing stages. Experimental results and resource consumption are discussed, analyzing the associated customization of the system. This work concludes with several comparisons with the actual contributions and examples for synthetic sequences and real image applications. © 2009 SPIE.

The mathematical models used in simulation must be reliable and trustworthy enough to describe the real systems with an appropriate accuracy. This simulation process is specially important in marine environment due to the changing environmental conditions, to the cost of the infrastructure needed to carry out tests, and to the need of calibration, deployment and recovery of the marine systems. If a reliable mathematical model of the vehicle is available, a part of the experimental tests can be avoided. In this paper we present a system identification technique based on genetic programming, the symbolic regression, to be applied on marine systems. In this sense, we show that it is possible to obtain a mathematical model of a ship for control purposes without the need of describing or knowing the model structure in advance, i.e., the identification itself provides the model structure that better describes the system. Thus, we can define a reliable black-box model that is computed in a simple way and where no many experimental data are needed. The model obtained is tested with additional data and manoeuvres to show its good performance and prediction ability.

This paper focuses on the hardware acceleration of Block Matching motion estimation techniques (Search reduction family) suitable for the standard H.264/AVC MPEG-4 part 10 video compression. Many representative motion estimation search algorithms are explained here. As hardware, the well known Altera DE2 platform with a Cyclone II EP2C35F672C6 is used with a soft core NIOS II processor. C2H compiler which permits us to speed up the system at least two magnitude order is used to accelerate our source code. The paper shows the results in terms of performance and resources needed. This is the starting point to accelerate motion estimation algorithms using many strategies considering an ad-hoc motion estimation processor. © 2011 IEEE.

Classification techniques based on Artificial Intelligence are computational tools that have been applied todetection of intrusions(IDS) with encouraging results. They are able tosolve problems related toinformation security in an efficient way. The intrusion detection implies the use of huge amount of information. For this reason heuristic methodologies have been proposed. In this paper, decision trees, Naive Bayes, and supervised classifying systems UCS, are combined toimprove the performance of a classifier. In order tovalidate the system, a scenariobased on real data of the NSL-KDD99 datasetis used.
