In the last decade, the Internet of Things paradigm has caused an exponential increase in the number of connected devices. This trend brings the Internet closer to everyday activities and enables data collection that can be used to create and improve a great variety of services and applications. Despite its great benefits, this paradigm also comes with several challenges. More powerful storage and processing capabilities are required to service all these devices. Additionally, the need to deploy and manage the infrastructure to efficiently support these resources continues to pose a challenge. Modeling and simulation can help to design and analyze these scenarios, providing flexible and powerful mechanisms to study and compare different strategies and infrastructures. In this scenario, Micro Data Centers (MDCs) can be used as an effective way of reducing overwhelmed Cloud Data Center infrastructures. This paper explores an M&S methodology to study the overall power consumption of a healthcare IoT scenario. The patients wear non-intrusive monitoring devices that periodically generate tasks to be executed in MDCs. We extract the layout of existing urban infrastructures, simulate the monitored population's behavior, and compare the power consumption of several data center configurations. © 2023, CC BY-SA.

A research on ship vertical motion smoothing was described using controlled flaps and a T-foil. SIMULINK models and a simulation environment were developed to facilitate control studies. The control caused cavitation problems and excessive motion reversing of the actuators during the experiments. The results on several fronts like good motion sickness incidence (MSI), slamming suppression, less cavitation, and less motion reversing were obtained.

This paper presents the design of a convolutional core that utilizes an approximate log multiplier to significantly reduce the power consumption of FPGA acceleration of convolutional neural networks. The core also exploits FPGA reconfigurability as well as the parallelism and input sharing opportunities in convolutional layers to minimize the costs. The simulation results show reductions up to 78.19% of LUT usage and 60.54% of power consumption compared to the core that uses exact fixed-point multiplier, while maintaining comparable accuracy on a subset of MNIST dataset. © 2019 ESANN (***). Web Laboratories (WebLabs) are essential resources for engineering education. Within this type of laboratory, a new Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) package design model is shown in this work. The proposed model is based on a set of resources that form a complete educational structure; taking into account the sequencing and navigation among the elements that compose it. In addition, it can be uploaded to a Learning Management System (LMS), offering to the students an effective tool to work with web labs. The package is structured in 4 sections or pages: Introduction, Theory, Virtual/Remote Laboratory (VRL) and Assessment; where the last performs an automated verification of the work done by the learner. In this way, one of the advantage of this methodology is that the instant results of the assessments, performed by the SCORM package, is stored in the inner LMS. Some WebLabs performing this methodology are being developed in the university of Jaén. In this work, an example is developed: "Modelling of Dynamic System: DC Motor". This WebLab is used in the Industrial Automation course that is included in several Industrial Engineering degrees.

This paper focuses on the stability analysis of a formation shape displayed by a team of mobile robots that uses heterogeneous sensing mechanism. Depending on the convenience and reliability of the local information, each robot utilizes the popular gradient-based control law which, in this paper, is either the distance-based or the bearing-only formation control. For the two and three robot case, we show that the use of heterogeneous gradient-based control laws can give rise to an undesired invariant set where a distorted formation shape is moving at a constant velocity. The (in)stability of such an invariant set is dependent on the specified distance and bearing constraints. For the two robot case, we prove almost global stability of the desired equilibrium set while for the three robot case, we guarantee local asymptotic stability for the correct formation shape. We also derive conditions for the three robot case in which the undesired invariant set is locally attractive. This paper focuses on securing a triangular shape (up to translation) for a team of three mobile robots that uses heterogeneous sensing mechanism. Based on the available local information, each robot employs the popular gradient-based control law to attain the assigned individual task(s). In the current work, robots are assigned either distance and signed area task(s) or bearing task(s). We provide a sufficient condition on the gain ratio RAd between the signed area and the distance control term such that the desired formation shape, an isosceles triangle, is reached from all feasible starting positions. — In this letter, we investigate the formation control problem of mobile robots moving in the plane where, instead of assuming robots to be simple points, each robot is assumed to have the form of a disk with equal radius. Based on interior angle measurements of the neighboring robots’ disk, which can be obtained from low-cost vision sensors, we propose a gradient-based distributed control law and show the exponential convergence property of the associated error system. By construction, the proposed control law has the appealing property of ensuring collision avoidance between neighboring robots. Current general-purpose memory allocators do not provide sufficient speed or flexibility for modern high-performance applications. To optimize metrics like performance, memory usage and energy consumption, software engineers often write custom allocators from scratch, which is a difficult and error-prone process. In this paper, we present a flexible and efficient simulator to study Dynamic Memory Managers (DMMs), a composition of one or more memory allocators. This novel approach allows programmers to simulate custom and general DMMs, which can be composed without incurring any additional runtime overhead or additional programming cost. We show that this infrastructure simplifies DMM construction, mainly because the target application does not need to be compiled every time a new DMM must be evaluated. Within a search procedure, the system designer can choose the "best" allocator by simulation for a particular target application. In our evaluation, we show that our scheme will deliver better performance, less memory usage and less energy consumption than single memory allocators.

This paper proposes a structure called SPBNet for enhancing binarized convolutional neural networks (BCNNs) using a low-cost 1-D spatial attention structure. Attention blocks can compensate for the performance drop in BCNNs. However, the hardware overhead of complex attention blocks can be a significant burden in BCNNs. The proposed attention block consists of low-cost 1-D height-wise and width-wise 1-D convolutions, It has the attention bias to adjust the effects of attended features in ×0.5−×1.5. In experiments, the proposed block used in ResNet18-based BCNNs improves Top-1 accuracy up to 2.7% over a baseline ReActNet on the CIFAR100 dataset. Notably, without using teacher-student training, the proposed structure can show comparable performance as the baseline ReActNetA using teacher-student training.
