With the fast development of highly integrated distributed systems (cluster systems), especially those encapsulated within a single platform [28, 9], designers have to face interesting memory hierarchy design choices that attempt to avoid disk storage swapping. Disk swapping activities slow down application execution drastically. Leveraging remote free memory through Memory Collaboration has demonstrated its cost-effectiveness compared to overprovisioning for peak load requirements. Recent studies propose several ways on accessing the under-utilized remote memory in static system configurations, without detailed exploration on the dynamic memory collaboration. Dynamic collaboration is an important aspect given the run-time memory usage fluctuations in clustered systems. In this paper, we propose an Autonomous Collaborative Memory system (ACMS) that manages memory resources dynamically at run time, to optimize performance, and provide QoS measures for nodes engaging in the system. We implement a prototype realizing the proposed ACMS, experiment with a wide range of real-world applications, and show up to 3x performance speedup compared to a non collaborative memory system, without perceivable performance impact on nodes that provide memory. Based on our experiments, we conduct detailed analysis on the remote memory access overhead and provide insights for future optimizations. Copyright 2012 ACM.

Regarding the increasing number of applications provided as external services, the importance of pseudonymous data as a means for privacy protection of user entities is growing. Along with it grows the relevance of secure and accurate generation, use and management of pseudonyms. In particular we consider the involvement of third parties in this process as potentially harmful, and therefore favor a decentralized pseudonym generation approach where the role of central components is reduced to a minimum. In this paper, we propose a pseudonym generation mechanism and focus on its implementation based on elliptic curve cryptography, in which every user entity can generate an arbitrary number of uncorrelatable pseudonyms with minimal effort, initially as well as at any later point in time. Because no sensitive information necessary for pseudonym generation is available on central components, our approach provides security as well as flexibility and usability. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

In Java programs, it needs to use the information of the method type to resolve the virtual method dynamically, which restricts the performance greatly. Currently, the solution is mainly the technique of inline caching, which can be divided into two categories: monomorphic inline caching and polymorphic inline caching. Because of the simple implementation of monomorphic inline caching, it is more commonly used, but it cannot resolve the problem of frequently seeing different types of objects at one call site. Although polymorphic inline caching can solve this problem, it is costly. This paper presents the CAM hardware table, proposes a virtual method invoking mechanism based on software and hardware co-design. It solves the problem of frequently seeing different types of objects at one call site, and does not introduce additional overhead. The experimental evaluation shows that it improves the cached hit rate from 13.3% to 76.4% and improves 16.2% performance of the virtual test;it improves the performance of SPECjvm98 by 6.4% on average. © 2011 IEEE.

Several standards and guidelines give advice on the development of qualitative and quantitative criteria to evaluate safety related systems, in order to apply these in safety critical applications. These standards don't take into account the possibility of an external attack on the safety related system. In this paper, we will describe the current situation and explore methods and models for security and safety related systems with the help of Markov-models.

The project of E-Simulator is under way at Hyogo Earthquake Engineering Research Center (E-Defense), which belongs to National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED), Japan. E-Defense facilitates the world's largest shaking table. The E-Simulator uses the parallel EF-analysis software package called ADVENTURECluster (ADVC) as a platform, and we carried out elastoplastic seismic response analysis of high-rise building frame with over 70-million DOFs. In this study, we report the results of high-precision FE-analysis for simulation of dynamic collapse behavior of the 4-story steel building frame. The whole frame is discretized into hexahedral elements with linear interpolation functions. In order to improve the accuracy of collapse simulation, a new piecewise linear combined isotropic and kinematic hardening rule is implemented for steel material, and its parameters are identified from the uniaxial material test result. The stud bolts are precisely modeled using multipoint constraints and nonlinear springs. The wire-meshes in the concrete slab are modeled using hexahedral elements. The damping due to plastic energy dissipation of exterior walls is modeled by shear springs between the floors. The accuracy of the model is verified in comparison to the physical test of steel-concrete composite beam subjected to static deformation. It will be shown that elastoplastic dynamic responses of the 4-story frame can be estimated with good accuracy using a high-precision FE-analysis without resort to macro-models such as plastic hinge and composite beam effect.

We consider a population based Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm and a few modifications to increase quality of optimization. Several strategies are investigated to exchange data between processors in parallel algorithm. Experimental investigation is performed on Multiple Gravity Assist problem. In this study, we report the results of high-precision FE-analysis for simulation of collapse behavior of the 4-story steel building frame that is the specimen of the full-scale total collapse shaking-table test conducted in September 2007 at E-Defense. It is shown that elastoplastic dynamic responses can be estimated with good accuracy using a high-precision FE-analysis without resort to macro models such as plastic hinge and composite beam effect.

To accommodate frequent emergencies, interruptions, and delays, hospital staff continually make and coordinate changes to the surgery schedule. The technical and social aspects of coordination in surgical suites have been described by prior studies. This paper addresses an understudied aspect of coordination: the physical environment. Based on a field study of four surgical suites in two large academic centers, we show how the physical layout of hallways and rooms, and barriers and spaces around displays and key coordinators, support or fail to support the common information spaces used for coordination. We use the concept "information hotspots" to represent how physical places and their characteristics facilitate coordination. We developed design principles based on the concept of information hotspots that should guide architectural considerations for coordination in dynamic environments such as hospitals. © 2010 ACM.

We present the results of a community detection analysis of the Wikipedia graph. Distinct communities in Wikipedia contain semantically closely related articles. The central topic of a community can be identified using PageRank. Extracted communities can be organized hierarchically similar to manually created Wikipedia category structure.
