Voice pathology detection is crucial for early diagnosis and treatment of vocal disorders. This research studies the effect of balanced and imbalanced datasets on the accuracy of voice pathology detection using Online Sequential Extreme Learning Machine (OSELM) on the Saarbruecken Voice Database (SVD). The dataset's balance has been identified as having a significant influence on the performance of the machine learning models. In this work, the voice signals from vowel /a/ of pathology and non-pathology classes are taken from SVD. The dataset is divided into two category which are balanced and imbalanced dataset. Then, the features of the voice signals are then extracted using Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) and fed into classifier called OSELM. The result of balanced and imbalanced dataset is assessed for its accuracy. The results showed that the model achieved an accuracy of 66.25% with the balanced dataset compared to 48% for the imbalanced dataset. These findings highlight the importance of addressing dataset balance to enhance the reliability and effectiveness of voice pathology detection systems. © 2024 IEEE.

The Software-Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm disaggregates the data plane, embodied by switches that only forward data, from the control plane, embodied by SDN controllers that communicate with said switches. SDN also proposes a third, application layer, which implements various functions such as firewalls or service discovery by communicating with the controllers through the northbound interface. However, while state-of-the-art works propose the deployment of multiple, distributed SDN controllers, the software architecture of these controllers is still monolithic, requiring not only the controller runtime but also all the network-level applications to be deployed across all SDN controller hardware. On the other hand, state-of-the-art SDN controllers such as MSN allow treating network-level applications as microservices, which comes with the challenge of orchestrating the microservices across the network. In this paper, we present Grex, a framework to orchestrate network-level applications across microservice-based SDN controllers. We test and validate the optimization model of Grex by performing experiments in a realistic network testbed using the MSN controller. © 2024 IEEE.

Advancements in human-computer interaction (HCI) and machine learning are seen as key avenues to help individuals living with upper limb disabilities in accomplishing their activities of daily living. Multi-channel myoelectric systems are a promising approach for HCI due to their intuitive and accurate capture of user intent through muscle activity. However, such systems are still bulky compared to widely accepted smartwatches-like devices and as such pose a challenge for seamless integration into daily life. Consequently, this work presents the first single-site EMG-IMU-PPG system for multi-gesture recognition from the wrist. Overall, when evaluated on eight able-bodied participant, the system achieves an average accuracy of 65.28%±10.45% on 17 finger and wrist gestures and 90.98%±5.65% on eight hand gestures. This study also introduces "Myo Hero", an online environment inspired by "Guitar Hero."Myo Hero provides a dynamic method for testing multi-gesture recognition systems, improving the evaluation process's appeal. Online evaluation of the multimodal system substantially outperformed random play, signifying EMG-IMU-PPG's potential for human-computer interaction. © 2024 IEEE.

Sri Lanka faces significant air pollution challenges, primarily from vehicular emissions, posing serious public health risks and impacting the quality of life. To address this, we developed a real-time air quality monitoring system that visualizes pollution data through an interactive heatmap. Our system integrates gas sensors that measure methane (CH4), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and particulate matter (PM.), connected to an ESP32 board and Wi-Fi module, and strategically deployed around smart buildings. The collected data is transmitted to a central hub using IoT technology and visualized on a mobile app developed with Flutter, featuring a color-coded scheme to represent pollution levels. This allows users to easily identify high-risk areas and select cleaner routes for travel. In testing, we focused on predicting PM. concentrations in Colombo using machine learning models, including Random Forest, XGBoost, and Prophet. Random Forest excelled in PM. prediction, while Prophet was highly effective for CO, demonstrating machine learning's potential in air quality forecasting. The system also includes a MIMI Air device that collects, processes, and transmits air quality data every 30 seconds, alerting users in real-time when pollutants exceed WHO thresholds, providing a cost-effective, reliable solution for public health. © 2024 IEEE.

This study analyzes the closed-loop control strategy for the domino resonant inductive power transfer (DR-IPT) system (modulation of DC-link voltage, phase shift, and switching frequency) for wireless battery charging. A high-voltage AC line (HVAC) is supposed to provide the initial AC voltage for the power converter. Three closed-loop control scenarios are used and the performance of the DR-IPT is examined. The frequency and phase shift controls are applied directly to the full-bridge inverter via the PWM technique, and the DC-link voltage control is employed with the buck-boost converter. This study shows that PI controllers are appropriate to achieve the desired system performance to charge a LiPo battery. Also, the simulation results reveal that the charging process can be effectively regulated using controllers;however, among different approaches, the phase shift control method might be considered the most suitable approach for charging the LiPo battery and avoiding bifurcation and increasing the cost of the RD-IPT system. © 2023 IEEE.

Telecom carriers have announced new content services by making a partnership with content providers and offered popular video streaming to customers. Via the integration with edge networks, telecom carriers can procure various contents from content providers and place them on edge servers proximate to end users to serve real-time requests with high bandwidth and ultra-low latency. Nevertheless, it is challenging to consider the content procurement, placement, and services jointly due to the user preference, user distribution, storage capacity of edge server, economic costs, etc. Telecom carriers would like to balance the procuring, placing, and transfer costs. To address this problem, the paper formulates an optimization problem and then proposes an approximation algorithm. Finally, the simulation results manifest that our algorithm outperforms other baselines. © 2024 IEEE.

The Red Palm Weevil (RPW) is a major threat to the date palm industry, requiring early detection strategies. This paper presents a comprehensive exploration of two bioacoustic sensor prototypes tailored for the early detection of RPW. The first prototype employs a Raspberry Pi 4 coupled with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), achieving a detection accuracy of 99.02%. The second device, built with an ESP32-WROVER module, integrates a Simple Neural Network (SNN) for audio classification and attains an accuracy of 98.79%. This design's affordability and low power consumption make it particularly suited for large-scale deployment in agricultural settings. This paper delves deeper into the bioacoustic sensor technology used, the dataset chosen for CNN and SNN models training, and provides a comparison between the two device designs in terms of cost and efficiency. Our project's commitment to iterative improvement aims to provide an effective solution to counteract RPW's destructive effects on date palm cultivation. © 2023 IEEE.

Games live streaming is growing rapidly as a form of entertainment. A game streamer will like to know what game to stream in order to attract huge number of viewers and followers which in turn will generate sizable income for the streamer. Using streamer's metrics, the main goal of this research work is to design and develop a set of resources that a streamer can use to maximize the number of viewers and followers for a particular game and when to play the game. This research develops two models using machine learning techniques that can be used by game streamers to maximum the returns on investment. When both model predictions are presented as percentage, Model 1 using regression algorithms provides a MAE of 5.48 meaning the prediction has an error within 5.48% of the streamer's total follower count. Also, Model 1 has 85.46% of its predictions' absolute error less than or equal to 5. Similarly Model 2 with 2.53 MAE and 87.68% of its predictions' absolute error less than or equal to 5. © 2022 IEEE.

The share of renewable energy sources in the energy mix worldwide is gradually increasing. And even though they all have a highly variable nature, they can be forecasted statistically. The wind energy potential was investigated in this article in the Bulgarian Danube region, located between Ruse and Silistra. Two years of meteorological data, including the wind speed at 10 m height and the ambient temperature was used to estimate the average wind energy for each month of the year at three geographic locations - Ruse, Staro Selo (near Tutrakan), and Calarasi, Romania (near Silistra). The results showed that Staro Selo has the highest energy potential, reaching up to 0.75 kWh/day/m2 in February, followed by Calarasi with 0.38 kWh/day/m2. The city of Ruse showed the lowest wind potential with the highest average monthly value reaching only 0.0027 kWh/day/m2. The obtained results showed that the regions around Tutrakan and Silistra are appropriate for the application of micro wind turbines. © 2024 IEEE.

In recent years, the popularity of network intrusion detection systems (NIDS) has surged, driven by the widespread adoption of cloud technologies. Given the escalating network traffic and the continuous evolution of cyber threats, the need for a highly efficient NIDS has become paramount for ensuring robust network security. Typically, intrusion detection systems utilize either a pattern-matching system or leverage machine learning for anomaly detection. While pattern-matching approaches tend to suffer from a high false positive rate (FPR), machine learning-based systems, such as SVM and KNN, predict potential attacks by recognizing distinct features. However, these models often operate on a limited set of features, resulting in lower accuracy and higher FPR. In our research, we introduced a deep learning model that harnesses the strengths of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) combined with a Bi-directional LSTM (Bi-LSTM) to learn spatial and temporal data features. The model, evaluated using the NSL-KDD dataset, exhibited a high detection rate with a minimal false positive rate. To enhance accuracy, K-fold cross-validation was employed in training the model. This paper showcases the effectiveness of the CNN with Bi-LSTM algorithm in achieving superior performance across metrics like accuracy, F1-score, precision, and recall. The binary classification model trained on the NSL-KDD dataset demonstrates outstanding performance, achieving a high accuracy of 99.5% after 10-fold cross-validation, with an average accuracy of 99.3%. The model exhibits remarkable detection rates (0.994) and a low false positive rate (0.13). In the multiclass setting, the model maintains exceptional precision (99.25%), reaching a peak accuracy of 99.59% for $\text{k-value} =10$. Notably, the Detection Rate for $\text{k-value}=10$ is 99.43%, and the mean False Positive Rate is calculated as 0.214925. © 2024 IEEE.
