The widespread increase of photovoltaic panels in the distribution grid often leads to overvoltage. Traditional voltage regulation techniques are unfair for prosumers at the sensitive part of the grid due to larger power curtailment. Consequently, there has been considerable research on implementing fair curtailment strategies for congestion management. However, existing fairness-incorporated curtailment approaches yield varying results based on changes in the grid topology and integration of renewable energy sources. Therefore, this paper introduces proportional voltage fairness that is independent of the above-mentioned network properties and inherently distinguishes regions for fair curtailment. Additionally, there is a need to consider the underutilisation of the grid while adhering to a fair curtailment scheme. Thus this paper proposes a control algorithm incorporating proportional voltage fairness and gives the opportunity to specify the trade-off between fairness and the total power curtailed. Further, a comparative analysis with respect to state-of-the-art notions of fairness is performed. ©2024 IEEE.

The increasing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) necessitates the efficient management of large EV parking facilities to prevent them from exceeding grid capacity and to improve the overall user experience. This paper introduces a data-driven approach for coordinated control of EV charging in an office parking facility, integrating Early Departure Buttons (EDB) into the system. These buttons provide a binary option for users to indicate an earlier departure than a predefined time. We employ the EDB data to improve departure time estimations and to address issues where EVs receive no or only very low energy. We utilize three datasets originating from different geographical locations. One dataset displays a user pattern where users leave shortly after completing their charging, unlike the other datasets which follow typical working hours. Our simulations show that the unique user pattern significantly increases fairness among users, and integrating EDBs improves fairness for the other datasets to levels similar to those of quick station turnover. © 2024 IEEE.

The deployment of video streaming in an Internet of Vehicles (IoV) context enhances both driving comfort and road safety. Video transmission provides clear and informative perspectives, offering a wide range of entertainment and infotainment, including details on restaurants, parking, and tourist attractions. However, maintaining a satisfactory quality of experience (QoE) in an IoV environment, which is characterized by fluctuating bandwidth and changing topology, presents a significant challenge. Furthermore, traffic parameters such as vehicle speed negatively impact video quality. This paper reviews various solutions proposed in the literature to optimize the MPEG-DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) protocol in an IoV environment. The objective is to dynamically adjust video quality based on available resources to enhance QoE. Additionally, this review identifies key areas that researchers should focus on to improve this protocol. We highlight also the important challenges for our future contributions. © 2024 IEEE.

In the realm of computer systems, efficient utilization of the CPU (Central Processing Unit) has always been a paramount concern. Researchers and engineers have long sought ways to optimize process execution on the CPU, leading to the emergence of CPU scheduling as a field of study. In this research, we have analyzed the single offline batch processing and investigated other sophisticated paradigms such as time-sharing operating systems and wildly used algorithms, and their shortcomings. Our work is directed toward two fundamental aspects of scheduling: efficiency and fairness. We propose a novel algorithm for batch processing that operates on a preemptive model, dynamically assigning priorities based on a robust ratio, employing a dynamic time slice, and utilizing periodic sorting to achieve fairness. By engineering this responsive and fair model, the proposed algorithm strikes a delicate balance between efficiency and fairness, providing an optimized solution for batch scheduling while ensuring system responsiveness. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

The increasing population, climate fluctuations, soil erosion, limited water resources, and concerns about food security highlight the need for effective and sustainable approaches to food production. Aquaponics represents a sustainable method that conserves land and water while minimizing its environmental impact. This technique operates as a closed-loop, soil-less farming system, requiring meticulous monitoring, control, and management. Monitoring an aquaponic greenhouse system involves tracking various parameters to maintain the health and productivity of both plants and fish. Our research introduces a design and algorithms for monitoring an aquaponic greenhouse, utilizing wireless sensor networks (WSN), aquaponic systems, and Internet of Things (IoT) technology. © 2024 IEEE.

Text Encoding and Language Identification via N-Gram Feature and UTF-8 Encoding Detection

This paper presents a method for automatically identifying the encoding and language of documents. In the online world, a technique for document encoding and language identification plays an important role in providing users with easy access to the information they need, and in improving the efficiency of data processing and analysis. In this paper, the proposed method first identifies whether a document is encoded in UTF-8 or not by analyzing the bit pattern. For the UTF-8, the language is identified by calculating the percentage of each language in the document through Unicode range analysis. If the document is found to be not UTF-8, it is determined to be a code page document, and the languages in the document are identified by our machine learning technique using N-grams. To evaluate the proposed method, we conducted experiments. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method improves the encoding and language identification performance compared to the existing methods. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition with varied symptoms affecting social communication, behavior, and sensory processing. Diagnosing ASD in children requires a thorough assessment of their behaviors, making it a nuanced process. This study explores the use of machine learning (ML) algorithms - logistic regression, decision tree, Naïve Bayes, support vector machine, and random forests - to streamline ASD diagnosis in children. Utilizing a modified Privacy-Preserving Aggregation of Teacher Ensembles (PATE) Framework, it combines small datasets from multiple practitioners and various ML approaches while preserving data privacy through encryption. Our results show that the PATE approach enhances the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of ASD diagnosis in children, compared to individual methods, while ensuring data privacy. This study advances collaborative predictive modeling in psychology, helping practitioners with small datasets work together effectively. © 2024 IEEE.

The video surveillance system is a key component of the technologies deployed in smart cities. It serves a variety of applications, including public safety, crime prevention, traffic management, and environmental monitoring. The data captured by these systems includes sensitive information related to privacy, crime and national security, requiring robust protection against data breaches to ensure confidentiality. In this paper, we introduce a video fingerprinting-based method that uses a timestamp and device number, intended to prevent and detect image manipulation or replacement of original images with copies during transmission and of receiving the monitored data. Additionally, we propose the use of a blockchain system with an immutable distributed ledger for traceability and auditing of authentication procedures. © 2024 IEEE.

Fatigue during driving significantly impairs a driver's reaction time, awareness, and decision-making abilities, leading to an increased risk of accidents. Recognising and mitigating driver fatigue is crucial for enhancing road safety and preventing potential collisions. This research introduces a non-intrusive method to reduce road accidents caused by driver fatigue. Recognising that accidents often occur due to lapses in driver alertness, the system utilises an affordable, high-quality webcam and dashcam. The approach involves extracting essential information through a multi-stage monitoring process to evaluate the driver's state thoroughly. The study includes a detailed analysis of webcam specifications, such as resolution, frame rate, and additional features. It also compares the traditional cascading technique with the advanced MediaPipe method, incorporating facial recognition, eye movement tracking, and head position analysis to detect driver fatigue accurately. © 2024 IEEE.

Internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles are very polluting and release high nitrogen oxides, carcinogens, and soot into the environment. ICE vehicles are the best choice in this era, but replacing ICE vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs) and automated vehicle control is a potential transition process. The most important turning point in the history of the automobile occurred with the entry of EVs into the vehicle market. The rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm in electric vehicles (EVs) has changed the way we look at large-scale transportation by making it intelligent and more sustainable. Recently, with the advent of connectivity through IoT platforms, IoT in EVs has improved performance and reduced environmental impact: from any on-off switch and adoption of IoT through our smartphones placed on the charging base. We can implement smart charging solutions for better energy consumption management, reduction of grid load, and battery life enhancement. IoT allows electric vehicles to communicate directly with charging stations and even the power grid, providing a better way to create balanced transportation networks. But implementing IoT in electric vehicles also raises some issues, including data security and user privacy. With all of these issues, there is huge potential in IoT usage with electric vehicles to help produce cleaner transportation and create a more sustainable future. © 2024 IEEE.
