The thermal environment in urban areas is characterized by the heat island phenomenon. To estimate the thermal conditions of land surfaces by satellite, it is necessary to find the relationship between the surface temperature and land cover type. The most widely used vegetation index for ecological application is the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). We studied the correlation between NDVI values and the surface temperature in our study area. NDVI uses radiance values or apparent reflectance values of the red and the near-infrared spectral bands. These reflectance values are influenced by the atmospheric aerosols. In order to calculate accurate NDVI values (aerosol-free NDVI), we first estimated the surface reflectance at visible bands by using our atmosphere-ground surface system based on the aerosol observation data. At the test site, we measured the aerosol optical thickness of visible bands using a sky radiometer, and we measured the air temperature and humidity by using a thermometer-hygrometer with a data logger. In this paper, we show the variations of aerosol optical thickness in the spring and summer and demonstrate the correlation between the surface temperatures of ASTER level 2B products and our observed screen temperatures.

This paper presents use of numerical simulations coupled with optimization techniques in reservoir modeling and production optimization. We describe three main components of an autonomic oil production management framework. In this paper, a novel approach to domain-specific video analysis is proposed. The proposed approach is based on exploiting domain-specific knowledge in the form of an ontology to detect video objects corresponding to the semantic concepts defined in the ontology. The association between the visual objects and the defined semantic concepts is performed by taking into account both qualitative attributes of the semantic objects (e.g. color homogeneity), indicating necessary preprocessing methods (color clustering, respectively), and numerical data generated via training (e.g. color models, also defined in the ontology). To enable fast and efficient processing, this methodology is applied to MPEG-2 video, requiring only its partial decoding. The proposed approach is demonstrated in the domain of Formula-1 racing video and shows promising results. © 2004 IEEE.

Over the last four years, a community of researchers working on Grid and High Performance Computing technologies started discussing the barriers and opportunities that grid technologies must face and exploit for the development of health-related applications. This interest lead to the first Healthgrid conference, held in Lyon, France, on January 16th–17th, 2003, with the focus of creating increased awareness about the possibilities and advantages linked to the deployment of grid technologies in health, ultimately targeting the creation of a European/international grid infrastructure for health. The topics of this conference converged with the position of the eHealth division of the European Commission, whose mandate from the Lisbon Meeting was "To develop an intelligent environment that enables ubiquitous management of citizens’ health status, and to assist health professionals in coping with some major challenges, risk management and the integration into clinical practice of advances in health knowledge." In this context "Health" involves not only clinical procedures but covers the whole range of information from molecular level (genetic and proteomic information) over cells and tissues, to the individual and finally the population level (social healthcare). Grid technology offers the opportunity to create a common working backbone for all different members of this large "health family" and will hopefully lead to an increased awareness and interoperability among disciplines. The first HealthGrid conference led to the creation of the Healthgrid association, a non-profit research association legally incorporated in France but formed from the broad community of European researchers and institutions sharing expertise in health grids. After the second Healthgrid conference, held in Clermont-Ferrand on January 29th–30th, 2004, the need for a "white paper" on the current status and prospective of health grids was raised. In this paper a novel equalization scheme based on parametric channel estimation is presented. The proposed scheme is appropriate for channels with long and sparse impulse response, such as encountered in high definition digital video transmission systems. The main trait of the channel estimation part is that instead of seeking the whole channel impulse response (CIR), only the unknown time delays and attenuation factors of the physical channel multipath components are efficiently estimated. The equalization part comprises an adaptive decision feedback equalizer (DFE), whose initialization part is properly designed for sparse channels. The information needed in the initialization part is provided by the channel estimation part. The DFE converges much faster compared to the conventional DFE and the whole scheme utilizes a very short training sequence and hence a significant saving in bandwidth is achieved. ©2004 IEEE.

In this paper a new blind image-adaptive watermarking scheme is proposed. The scheme employs a new spatial mask whose construction is based on the HVS's (Human Visual System) properties. Specifically, the mask is a function of the local variance of the cover image prediction error sequence. An improved blind detection scheme has also been developed, based on a proper pre-whitening process. Due to the above modifications the proposed technique exhibits superior performance as compared to conventional HVS-based blind adaptive watermarking. The proposed detector's performance improvement has been justified theoretically for the cases of no attack, noise attack and linear filtering attack, and is also verified through extensive simulations. The theoretical analysis is independent of the proposed mask and the derived expressions can be used for any watermarking technique based on spatial masking. Moreover, proper expressions have been derived that enable the computation of detection thresholds adaptable to the attacking conditions.

This paper considers the stability of the fractional-order linear time-invariant systems with interval type uncertainties in both fractional orders and the relevant coefficients. It is an extension of our previous result on the robust stability analysis of the interval type uncertain fractional order LTI systems with crisply known fractional orders. We have proposed a stability check procedure for uncertain LTI systems with interval fractional orders and interval coefficients. The procedure is demonstrated with some simple examples. © 2004 IEEE.

An approach for real-time analyses, estimation and prognoses of strong motion seismic waves with stochastic modeling and neural network is presented. As input information are given the parameters of recorded part of accelerogram, principle axis transform and spectral characteristics of the wave. With the help of stochastic long range dependence time series analyses is determined the beginning of destructive phase of strong motion acceleration. The suggested approach gives possibility to classify seismic waves from recorded part of the wave to certain class, according to developed seismic waves classification. For different kind of classified waves are suggested different kind prognoses models. The prognoses is realized with the help of neural network, build on the principle of vector quantization. For prognoses of destructive phase of strong motion waves is suggested scene-oriented model. The determined statistical function of density distribution of recorded data from accelerogram are generating in real time. The received destructive phase prognoses of strong motion waves can be used in devices for structural control. Examples of received prognoses are compared with real data of strong motion waves. Simulation and numerical results are shown.

We present in this paper three algorithms. The first extracts repeated motifs from a weighted sequence. The motifs correspond to words which occur at least q times and with hamming distance e in a weighted sequence with probability ≥ 1/k each time, where k is a small constant. The second algorithm extracts common motifs from a set of N ≥ 2 weighted sequences with hamming distance e. In the second case, the motifs must occur twice with probability ≥ 1/k, in 1 ≤ q ≤ N distinct sequences of the set. The third algorithm extracts maximal pairs from a weighted sequence. A pair in a sequence is the occurrence of the same substring twice. In addition, the algorithms presented in this paper improve slightly on previous work on these problems. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

The routing algorithms for multimedia communication should use for routing more than one QoS parameter. This is because new services such as video on demand and remote meeting systems require better QoS. However, the problem of QoS routing is difficult and to find a feasible route with two independent path constraints is NP-complete. Also, QoS routing algorithms for broadband networks must be adaptive, flexible, and intelligent for efficient network management. In this paper, we propose a multipurpose optimization method for QoS routing based on Genetic Algorithm (GA). The simulation results show that proposed method has a good performance and is a promising method for QoS routing.
