Assessing the behavior and welfare of chickens is crucial for successful chicken rearing and product quality. Recent research has focused on using advanced cameras and computer vision technologies to analyze chicken behavior. This camera-based approach captures high-resolution video footage, which is then processed using computer vision algorithms to extract insights on movement patterns, feeding behavior, and social interactions. While this approach has advanced our understanding, there is a need for studies employing a frame-by-frame analysis to obtain fine-grained details of chicken behavior. This method allows for precise measurements and real-time analysis, facilitating informed decision-making in chicken farming. To expedite the assessment process, a bandpass filter 470 nm lens is incorporated into the camera setup, optimizing image segmentation and reducing processing time. The proposed system combines this specialized camera with frame-by-frame calculations to track and measure the velocity, acceleration, and position of chickens within a flock. The integration of these technologies holds the potential for improving our understanding of chicken behavior, enhancing welfare, and driving data-driven decision-making in chicken farming practices.

Modern electric power systems with high levels of penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) often present frequency security problems. The lack of inertia due to the reduced number of synchronous generators in these systems, in combination with the usual inability of RES to provide frequency support, leads to system operators having to curtail RES or rely heavily on Under Frequency Load Shedding schemes to ensure frequency security. Fast Frequency Reserves (FFR) have been proposed as a solution to strengthen the frequency support of the system and alleviate security problems. FFR allows mitigating Rate of Change of Frequency, Nadir, and post-fault frequency steady-state problems after an event. In this paper, we present, analyze, implement and compare five FFR controllers to alleviate frequency security problems in low-inertia grids. The low-inertia, islanded, Cyprus dynamic model is used to quantify the results and exhibit the impact on a real system.

Adopting serverless computing to edge networks benefits end-users from the pay-as-you-use billing model and flexible scaling of applications. This paradigm extends the boundaries of edge computing and remarkably improves the quality of services. However, due to the heterogeneous nature of computing and bandwidth resources in edge networks, it is challenging to dynamically allocate different resources while adapting to the burstiness and high concurrency in serverless workloads. This article focuses on serverless function provisioning in edge networks to optimize end-to-end latency, where the challenge lies in jointly allocating wireless bandwidth and computing resources among heterogeneous computing nodes. To address this challenge, We devised a context-aware learning framework that adaptively orchestrates a wide spectrum of resources and jointly considers them to avoid resource fragmentation. Extensive simulation results justified that the proposed algorithm reduces over 95% of converge time while the end-to-end delay is comparable to the state of the art. © 2024, CC BY.

The presented article introduces the obtained solutions to the problems of information security in information networks at high-voltage electrical substations. The topic is driven by the ever-increasing apply of digital instrument transformers to measure electrical values on substations. These intelligent devices allow you to measure the currents and voltages in real time. The measured electrical instant values contained inside the data stream from digital instrument transformers must be delivered to the substation dispatching system in a strictly limited time. Exceeding the time delays of information transmission in the information network of a substation can lead to an accident at a critical infrastructure facility, which is an electrical substation. An increase in time delays during data transmission to the substation control system may be the results of information storms, which for various reasons may occur in the substation information network. This is one of the reasons for holding back the transition of the electric power sector of economy to the digital substations application. The presented software and hardware for digital instrumental transformers make it possible to ensure data transmission with an acceptable time delay in the event of an increase in the information load on the network. Laboratory studies and mathematical modeling confirm the results of the development. © 2022 IEEE.

Long Short-Term Memory and Gated Recurrent Unit-based networks are examined for short-term load forecasting for the Greek power system, where predictions of the next hour's load are made for the whole year. The recurrent property of the forecasters has the advantage to allow the use of a reduced input set since no prior knowledge of the most suitable previous loads is required for the model to identify the temporal relations that exist in the load time-series. An extensive simulation analysis is conducted, to evaluate the forecasters' performance and to highlight their particular learning characteristics. Both deep learning-based forecasters perform very efficiently, with LSTM achieving an average percentage error of 1.18% and a root mean squared error of 83.8 MW, while GRU performs similarly with respective values of 1.17% and 83.4 MW.

In this research, we presented a modification to the recently developed swarm premised American zebra search optimization algorithm (AZOA) using chaos. The particular Singer mapping was proposed by the so-called chaotic AZOA and was already known to perform better in optimization. Twelve uni, multi modal benchmark functions, three-bar truss and ten bar truss optimal structural designs were tested. The chaotic AZOA with Singer map would perform more effectively, more consistently, and quicker than the classical AZOA and other recent metaheuristics in optimization, according to the results, which also supported the viability of the modifications. It was discussed if the chaotic AZAO could be optimized with the original AZOA, and the chaotic AZOA was suggested for use in applications for actual engineering challenges. © 2023 IEEE.

SWAM: Revisiting Swap and OOMK for Improving Application Responsiveness on Mobile Devices

Existing memory reclamation policies on mobile devices may be no longer valid because they have negative effects on the response time of running applications. In this paper, we propose SWAM, a new integrated memory management technique that complements the shortcomings of both the swapping and killing mechanism in mobile devices and improves the application responsiveness. SWAM consists of (1) Adaptive Swap that performs swapping adaptively into memory or storage device while managing the swap space dynamically, (2) OOM Cleaner that reclaims shared object pages in the swap space to secure available memory and storage space, and (3) EOOM Killer that terminates processes in the worst case while prioritizing the lowest initialization cost applications as victim processes first. Experimental results demonstrate that SWAM significantly reduces the number of applications killed by OOMK (6.5x lower), and improves application launch time (36% faster) and response time (41% faster), compared to the conventional schemes. © 2023, CC BY.

Induction motors can be operated as induction generators when additional capacitors are added to the stator terminals. Capacitors connected to induction generators can generate voltage and can provide reactive power. The advantage of induction generators can be used in small-scale plants such as micro-hydro power plants. However, the weakness of induction generators are weak voltage regulation and dependence on capacitors to generate voltage. This study conducted a test to see how the effect of capacitor capacity on the voltage generated by a induction generator when serving multiple incandescent lamp loads. The capacitor used is connected with a wye connection because the Wye connection can generate a higher voltage than the Delta connection circuit. This research has been successfully carried out with variations in capacitor values, namely 45 F, 60 F, and 75 F and variations in lamp load values, namely 5W, 15W, 25W, 40W and 60W. Based on the results of the study, the induction generators uses a 45 F capacitor with a load of 5 W, the terminal voltage for line to line is 374 V. However, when using a 75 F capacitor with a 60W load, the terminal voltage for line to line is 239 V. The terminals voltage of the induction generators can also be kept at a constant 380 V by providing varying capacitor values even though it serves varying loads. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in exploring the concept of robot gender within Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). It draws on a case study of the authors' own collaboration, where interdisciplinary discussions on the nature of gender informed the design of a multimethod study. This approach allowed us to avoid assigning a binary gender to Pepper robot, while still encouraging participants to reflect on their own gendering practices during interactions with robots. Additionally, we invite readers to consider alternative ways of conceptualizing robot gender in HRI—specifically, as fluid and performative rather than binary, which relies on stereotypical cues. After describing how our discussions on gender influenced and reshaped the study design, we offer practical advice on fostering interdisciplinary collaborations. These suggestions focus on communication strategies, mindset, and the practical setup of collaborative studies. We hope that these recommendations will inspire other researchers to continue exploring new and interdisciplinary ways of approaching robot gender in HRI.

In this work, the optimal design of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) wing spar by multi-objective optimization genetic algorithms is studied. An electromechanical finite element model (FEM) for piezolaminated bimorph cantilever structure with embedded piezoceramics is used combined with multiobjective genetic algorithms. The FEM formulation is based on laminated plate theory combined with the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) for which each piezoelectric layer has one additional electrical degree of freedom. Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II), Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm III (NSGA-III) and Generalized Differential Evolution 3 (GDE3) algorithm have been used to optimize the geometric and electric circuit parameters of a UAV generator for maximum power output and minimum mass added by the embedded piezoceramics. It is shown that the proposed algorithms are effective in developing optimal Pareto front curves for maximum electrical power output of the generator spar and minimum mass add by the embedded piezoceramics. Comparison of the generated solutions on the Pareto Front for UAV wing spar design shows that all three algorithms achieve solutions that closely resemble a constructed reference Pareto optimal front. © 2021 IEEE
