This paper introduces the concepts of functional size measurement (FSM) patterns. These FSM patterns apply to the COSMIC FSM method and may help in solving several issues, such as being able to do an early sizing for estimation, helping inexperienced measurers in learning how to apply the COSMIC method by establishing the relationship between the method rules and the measurement results, avoiding measurement errors, and reducing measurement effort. The approach used to define FSM patterns is design Science Research. This paper explores the motivation factors, defines the objectives of the solution, and describes the design and development of FSM patterns. FSM patterns can be defined for a portion of a functional process, a single functional process type, a set of functional process types having a main data group - or object of interest - as their common starting point, or a large set of functional processes handling multiple data groups. These types of FSM patterns have been defined as "micro FSM pattern", "basic FSM pattern", "composite FSM pattern", and "multi-composite FSM pattern" respectively. FSM patterns examples are given to demonstrate their applicability in information systems for all four FSM pattern types. Application of FSM pattern with embedded real-time systems is discussed, along with other potential usage benefits for the industry.

Ultrasound is a viable imaging technology in remote and resources-limited areas. Ultrasonography is a user-dependent skill which depends on a high degree of training and hands-on experience. However, there is a limited number of skillful sonographers located in remote areas. In this work, we aim to develop a real-time video streaming platform which allows specialist physicians to remotely monitor ultrasound exams. To this end, an ultrasound stream is captured and transmitted through a wireless network into remote computers, smart-phones and tablets. In addition, the system is equipped with a camera to track the position of the ultrasound probe. The main advantage of our work is using an open source platform for video streaming which gives us more control over streaming parameters than the available commercial products. The transmission delays of the system are evaluated for several ultrasound video resolutions and the results show that ultrasound videos close to the high-definition (HD) resolution can be received and displayed on an Android tablet with the delay of 0.5 seconds which is acceptable for accurate real-time diagnosis.

To build reliable avionic applications, we interconnect Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) architectures with Time-Triggered Ethernet (TT-Ethernet). These systems have direct impacts on human lives where the failure is unacceptable. Therefore, verification is an important issue to ensure the safety and the performance of the system. The integration of IMA architectures is a very complex and challenging engineering task. To cope with complexity and to perform verification, a model-based approach, which endows engineering teams with a methodology and an adequate tooling is of a paramount importance. To design IMA architectures interconnected with TT-Ethernet, we have proposed an extension of the AADL language in previous works. In this paper, we present a simulation-based verification of our extension and show how it can be simulated using a discrete event simulation environment called deVS Suite. The main advantage of this technique is to perform cycle-accurate simulation of the complex avionics systems, which cannot be undertaken by model checking techniques. The Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) architecture and the Time-Triggered Ethernet (TTEthernet) network have emerged as the key components of a typical architecture model for recent civil aircrafts. We propose a real-time constraint-based calculus targeted at the analysis of such concepts of avionic embedded systems. We show our framework at work on the modelisation of both the (IMA) architecture and the TTEthernet network, illustrating their behavior by the well-known Flight Management System (FMS).

The Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) architecture and the Time-Triggered Ethernet (TTEthernet) network have emerged as the key components of a typical architecture model for recent civil aircrafts. It has recently been proposed to model both the (IMA) architecture and the TTEthernet network in the constraint-based TTCC calculus. In this paper, we show how the declarative aspects of this calculus can provide a simple and elegant way to specify requirements of time-triggered systems. We illustrate our approach on a complete model of a sub-system of the flight management system.

The many cores design research community have shown high interest in optical crossbars on chip for more than a decade. Key properties of optical crossbars, namely a) contention-free data routing b) low-latency communication and c) potential for high bandwidth through the use of WDM, motivate several implementations. These implementations demonstrate very different scalability and power efficiency ability depending on three key design factors: a) the network topology, b) the considered layout and c) the insertion losses induced by the fabrication process. The emerging design technique relying on multi-layer deposited silicon allows reducing optical losses, which may lead to significant reduction of the power consumption. In this paper, multi-layer deposited silicon based crossbars are proposed and compared. The results indicate that the proposed ring-based network exhibits, on average, 22% and 51.4% improvement for worst-case and average losses respectively compared to the most power-efficient related crossbars.

Optical Network-on-Chip (ONoC) is an emerging technology considered as one of the key solutions for future generation on-chip interconnects. However, silicon photonic devices in ONoC are highly sensitive to temperature variation, which leads to a lower efficiency of Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs), a resonant wavelength shift of Microring Resonators (MR), and results in a lower Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). In this paper, we propose a methodology enabling thermal-aware design for optical interconnects relying on CMOS-compatible VCSEL. Thermal simulations allow designing ONoC interfaces with low gradient temperature and analytical models allow evaluating the SNR.

Integrated modular avionics architectures combined with the emerging SAE TTEthernet standard provides a strong infrastructure for the deployment of mixed-critical avionic applications having stringent safety, reliability and performance requirements. The integration of such systems is a very complex and challenging engineering task. Therefore, a model-based approach, which endows system engineers with a methodology and the supporting tools to cope with this complexity, is of a paramount importance. In this research paper, we present an extension for the standard architecture and analysis modeling language AADL to enable modeling integrated multi-critical avionic applications deployed on TTEthernet-based IMA architectures. In particular, we present a metamodel which extends the core AADL metamodel with concepts and constraints relevant for this domain, we define the concrete textual syntax for this extension and we outline the implementation of this extension using the Open Source AADL Tool Environment (OSATE). Finally, we illustrate our AADL extension using a case study based on the Flight Management System.

Quantitative assessment of first-pass cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) perfusion imaging is useful for detecting coronary artery disease, but it requires the measurement of the arterial input function (AIF) from the left ventricle. This is usually done manually, which is time consuming and subjective. This study presents an automated method for measuring the AIF from the first-pass CMR perfusion images. It was tested on 194 clinical perfusion studies and compared with manual reference measurements. Our results show the proposed method successfully measured 98.79% of the perfusion series, with manual and automated measurements strongly correlating. Temporal statistics were similar for both measurements, showing agreement between the automated and manual AIFs. The automated method, however, more accurately selected the brightest left ventricle pixels and excluded papillary muscles. These improvements may help make AIF measurement and quantitative CMR myocardial perfusion analysis more accurate and readily available.

Non-interference (NI) is a property of systems stating that confidential actions should not cause effects observable by unauthorized users. Several variants of NI have been studied for many types of models, but rarely for true concurrency or unbounded models. This work investigates NI for High-level Message Sequence Charts (HMSC), a scenario language for the description of distributed systems, based on composition of partial orders. We first propose a general definition of security properties in terms of equivalence among observations, and show that these properties, and in particular NI are undecidable for HMSCs. We hence consider weaker local properties, describing situations where a system is attacked by a single agent, and show that local NI is decidable. We then refine local NI to a finer notion of causal NI that emphasizes causal dependencies between confidential actions and observations, and extend it to causal NI with (selective) declassification of confidential events. Checking whether a system satisfies local and causal NI and their declassified variants are PSPACE-complete problems.
