Trends in SoC design are leading to 3D integration of thousands of high-performance computing resources and high-throughput interconnects, opening up new research directions for hybrid electronic/photonic architectures. In this paper, we introduce how state of the art silicon-photonic devices can realize elementary operations that are traditionally performed by electronic devices, e.g. circuit switching and Boolean function computation. We then highlight how these devices need to be assembled in order to realize more complex functions, taking into account the constraints specific to silicon-photonic technology. In the last part, we summarize the main research directions for the near future.

Trace data usually contains information about the underlying system execution such as running processes, memory usage, disk and file accesses and other runtime information. However, this raw data is not what the system administrators are looking for. For instance, in a multi-core system, the system administrator may need to know what is the utilization of each core or even what are the performance bottlenecks of the system. This analytical information is not available directly from the trace data and, in fact, is hidden behind the mountains of trace raw data. The trace data needs to be analyzed to extract the valuable information. Thus, efficient trace analysis tools and techniques need to be developed to handle large trace data and extract and provide useful and analytical information. In this paper, we propose a stateful trace analysis and abstraction approach that shares the computation and storage of the common information between parallel abstraction processes. This technique leads to relatively simple patterns compared to other pattern-based techniques. Furthermore, since it computes and stores the common state once, shared between related processes, it has a better computation and storage efficiency than stateless methods. The architecture of the method, its applications, and evaluation are detailed in this paper.

This paper reports the results and some challenges we discovered during the design and execution of a pilot experiment with 21 bachelor students aimed at investigating the effect of documentation accuracy during software maintenance and evolution activities. As documentation we considered: a high level system functionality description and UML documents. Preliminary results indicate a benefit of +15% in terms of efficiency (computed as number of correct tasks per minute) when a more accurate documentation is used. The discovered challenging aspects to carefully consider in future executions of the experiment are as follows: selecting "the right" documentation artefacts, maintenance tasks and documentation versions, verifying that the subjects really used the documentation during the experiment and measuring documentation-code alignment.

Increase in vulnerability to soft errors has affected the reliability of both synchronous and asynchronous circuits implemented in modern deep sub-micron technologies. Hence in such circuits, there is a growing need to identify the soft error glitch propagation possibility at an early stage in the design flow. This paper proposes a new methodology to obtain soft error glitch propagation paths in digital designs (both synchronous and asynchronous). To compute these paths, Multiway decision Graphs (MDGs) and glitch-propagation sets (GP sets) are utilized in conjunction with Boolean Satisfiability solvers (MiniSat). The applicability of the proposed method is illustrated by implementing ISCAS89 benchmark sequential circuits, 8-bit adders, multipliers, and the Self-timed multiple-group pipeline asynchronous handshake circuits. The proposed SAT based methodology is on average 13 times faster than the best contemporary state-of-the-art techniques exhaustively analyze possible soft error glitch-propagation paths. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, a wearable, battery-powered, low-power, low-size, cost-efficient, fully programmable neural stimulator is presented. The system comprises a wearable stimulator module and an external controller. To receive the settings required for the operation of the system, the wearable module is programmed through wireless connection to the external controller. Implemented using off-the-shelf components, the wearable neural stimulator weighs 60g and measures 9cm×5cm×2cm. The system is capable of generating independent biphasic stimulations on 8 channels with programmable amplitudes and timings. The neural stimulator consumes about 1.5mW in the power-down mode and about 51.2mW in the active mode when all the 8 channels are active. For in-vivo experiments, the system was used to stimulate motor cortex of an anesthetized rat fixed in a stereotaxic instrument. © 2012 IEEE.

Efficient conditional tracepoints in kernel space

With kernel static tracepoints, it is now possible to add instrumentation to the Linux kernel and obtain a low overhead trace of the whole system. However, these static tracepoints may be insufficient to diagnose the source of a functional or performance problem. Dynamic instrumentation fills the gap by enabling the insertion of additional tracepoints in other locations at run time. This article presents a new approach for tracing the Linux kernel with dynamic and static tracepoints. These tracepoints will be conditional. Conditions are defined using complex expressions that employ the code variables and make use of arithmetic and logic operations. These expressions are written using C-like syntax. Both static and dynamic tracepoints will evaluate and collect expressions similar to those used for conditions. In addition, static tracepoints will collect the static tracepoint data, as defined by the TRACE_EVENT macro used to define tracepoints in the Linux kernel. Our tool was implemented based on GDB and KGTP, which is a GDB stub in kernel-space that partially implements dynamic tracepoints. © Fahem and Dagenais.

This paper reports on the design of a programmable, high output impedance, large voltage compliance microstimulator for low-voltage biomedical applications. A 6-bit binary-weighted digital to analog converter (DAC) is used to generate biphasic stimulus current pulses. A compact current mirror with large output voltage compliance and high output resistance conveys the current pulses to the target tissue. designed and simulated in a standard 0.18μm CMOS process, the microstimulator circuit is capable of delivering a maximum stimulation current of 160μA to a 10-kΩ resistive load. Operated at a 1.8-V supply voltage, the output stage exhibits a voltage compliance of 1.69V and output resistance of 160MΩ at full scale stimulus current. Layout of the core microelectrode circuit measures 25.5μm×31.5μm.

A Stateful Approach to Generate Synthetic Events from Kernel Traces

We propose a generic synthetic event generator from kernel trace events. The proposed method makes use of patterns of system states and environment-independent semantic events rather than platform-specific raw events. This method can be applied to different kernel and user level trace formats. We use a state model to store intermediate states and events. This stateful method supports partial trace abstraction and enables users to seek and navigate through the trace events and to abstract out the desired part. Since it uses the current and previous values of the system states and has more knowledge of the underlying system execution, it can generate a wide range of synthetic events. One of the obvious applications of this method is the identification of system faults and problems that will appear later in this paper. We will discuss the architecture of the method, its implementation, and the performance results.

We showed that magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) have great potentials to be used as microcarriers for targeted delivery of therapeutic agents. Indeed, magnetotaxis inherent in MTB can be exploited to direct them towards a tumor while being propelled by their own flagellated molecular motors. Nonetheless, although the thrust propelling force above 4 pN of the MC-1 MTB showed to be superior compared to other technologies for displacement in the microvasculature, MTB becomes much less efficient when travelling in larger blood vessels due to higher blood flow. In the latter case, a new technique developed by our group and referred to as Magnetic Resonance Navigation (MRN), has been successfully applied in larger vessels using synthetic microcarriers nut proved to be less efficient in the microvasculature due mainly to technological constraints. These findings called for the need to integrate both approaches by encapsulating MTB in special MRN-compatible microcarriers to be release in the vicinity of microvascular networks where they becomes more effective for targeting purposes in tumoral lesions. In this study Magnetococcus strain MC-1 were encapsulated in giant vesicles. The survival of the encapsulated bacteria was monitored. The release of bacteria from giant vesicles was also studied in different time intervals and conditions.
