The use of complex electronic systems in medical technology applications is constantly increasing. These systems are becoming increasingly important, particularly in the area of analyzing the progress of treatment, as they can be used to identify any deficits that may still exist. For decades, speed sensors based on the spatial frequency filter method have successfully proven themselves in a wide range of applications. This makes the sensor concept particularly suitable for the area of functional safety. New filter variants extend the previous measuring range to very low speeds up to standstill detection. By combining the sensor with a safety system on chip for recording and analysing measured values, a functionally safe measuring chain can be established. In order to demonstrate the variability and performance of the new filters, an optical application-specific integrated circuit was designed, which forms the basis for further extensive tests. The core components are a large number of freely configurable photodiode channels, which were realised via a redundant structure, as well as two different transimpedance amplifier concepts. In the further course of the project, the ASIC will be analysed with regard to its desired performance parameters and its robustness.

Several standards and guidelines give advice on the development of qualitative and quantitative criteria to evaluate safety related systems, in order to apply these in safety critical applications. These standards don't take into account the possibility of an external attack on the safety related system. In this paper, we will describe the current situation and explore methods and models for security and safety related systems with the help of Markov-models.

This paper presents an automated code generation and validation, verification approach to convert model based developments into IEC 61131-3 conform function blocks. IEC 61131-3 programming languages are supported by PLC manufacturers and software environment developers and provide the possibility that novel and intelligent algorithms can be directly operated on industrial accepted systems. Railway and transportation also receive drastic changes from purely hardware based systems to microcontroller + software driven systems. However, the conversion has to follow certain steps to ensure that the adaptation is done correctly and functionality is not alternated, added or deleted. Concepts suggested by different international standards such as the IEC 61508 can help to derive a tool chain to verify the generated code. © IFAC.

This paper investigates the possibilities to monitor the degree of disturbances of a wireless communication and to use this information to calculate online the necessary safety parameters in order to estimate the probability of failure per hour (PFH) and the safety integrity level (SIL). Depending of the degree of disturbances, addition actions are performed with the intention of keeping the current safety level. Recent studies have focused on leveraging large-scale artificial intelligence (LAI) models to improve semantic representation and compression capabilities. However, the substantial computational demands of LAI models pose significant challenges for real-time communication scenarios. To address this, this paper proposes utilizing knowledge distillation (KD) techniques to extract and condense knowledge from LAI models, effectively reducing model complexity and computation latency. Nevertheless, the inherent complexity of LAI models leads to prolonged inference times during distillation, while their lack of channel awareness compromises the distillation performance. These limitations make standard KD methods unsuitable for task-oriented semantic communication scenarios. To address these issues, we propose a fast distillation method featuring a pre-stored compression mechanism that eliminates the need for repetitive inference, significantly improving efficiency. Furthermore, a channel adaptive module is incorporated to dynamically adjust the transmitted semantic information based on varying channel conditions, enhancing communication reliability and adaptability. In addition, an information bottleneck-based loss function is derived to guide the fast distillation process. Simulation results verify that the proposed scheme outperform baselines in term of task accuracy, model size, computation latency, and training data requirements. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

Data flow processing is a common task of embedded systems which is usually modeled as a pipeline. Errors in a block of this pipeline can be propagated through it thus leading to unexpected and erroneous behaviors. For safety related applications, this pipeline has to be able to identify and react to failures. The DMOSES model-driven development method uses deterministic UML activities to describe and implement data flow processing. This method ensures deterministic behavior of concurrent processing. Design by Contract defines formal, precise and verifiable interfaces for software components. We propose a development method for safe data flow processing based on the integration of this concept in deterministic UML activities. This integration allows the identification of errors by detection of contracts violation. This paper presents an extension of the DMOSES tool for contracts verification at the model level and their monitoring at runtime. © 2011 IEEE.

Optical speed sensors based on the spatial frequency filter method are a proven technology that offer high measurement accuracy over a wide speed range. Newly developed variants also enable measurements at very low speeds and increase the robustness of the method [1]. This makes the sensor very suitable for use in the area of functional safety. A measurement chain up to safety integrity level 3 (SIL3) should be feasible via a combination with a safety system on a chip (SoC) for evaluating the measurement data and an extension of the sensor module to include safety-related elements [2], [3]. By integrating the sensor at IC level, a compact overall solution is to be made possible. After the first successful tests with the safety SoC, further examinations of the measuring method with regard to functional safety are now necessary. © 2023 IEEE.
