We present the results of a community detection analysis of the Wikipedia graph. Distinct communities in Wikipedia contain semantically closely related articles. The central topic of a community can be identified using PageRank. Extracted communities can be organized hierarchically similar to manually created Wikipedia category structure. Partial Differential Equations (PDE) are the heart of most simulations in many scientific fields, from Fluid Mechanics to Astrophysics. One the most popular mathematical schemes to solve a PDE is Finite Difference (FD). In this work we map a PDE-FD algorithm called Reverse Time Migration to a GPU using CUDA. This seismic imaging (Geophysics) algorithm is widely used in the oil industry. GPUs are natural contenders in the aftermath of the clock race, in particular for High-performance Computing (HPC). Due to GPU characteristics, the parallelism paradigm shifts from the classical threads plus SIMD to Single Program Multiple Data (SPMD). The NVIDIA GTX 280 implementation outperforms homogeneous CPUs up to 9x (Intel Harpertown E5420) and up to 14x (IBM PPC 970). These preliminary results confirm that GPUs are a real option for HPC, from performance to programmability.

A bidirectional transformation consists of a pair of unidirectional transformations: a forward transformation that maps one data structure called source to another called view, and a backward transformation that reflects changes in the view to the source. Bidirectional transformation has many useful applications such as replicated data synchronization, presentation-oriented editor development, and software artifact synchronization. In a previous work, we proposed a framework in which a backward transformation is automatically generated from a forward transformation by derivation of a complementary function if the forward transformation is given by a program in a simple functional language. However, the language has a severe restriction that no variable is allowed to be used more than once. In this paper, we show that tupling transformation relaxes this restriction, allowing us to handle a wider class of bidirectional transformations that may contain duplications.

Power consumption in scan-based testing is a major concern nowadays. In this paper, we present a new X-filling technique to reduce both shift power and capture power during scan tests, namely LSC-filling. The basic idea is to use as few as possible X-bits to keep the capture power under the peak power limit of the circuit under test (CUT), while using the remaining X-bits to reduce the shift power to cut down the CUT's average power consumption during scan tests as much as possible. In addition, by carefully selecting the X-filling order, our X-filling technique is able to achieve lower capture power when compared to existing methods. Experimental results on ISCAS'89 benchmark circuits show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. ©2008 IEEE.

Along with the thorough development and application for Web services, the security of it has taken people¿s attention more and more. While Web services security (WSS) can exchange safe SOAP message and enhance the security of Web services, it will also have certain influence to the performance of Web services. In order to satisfy the security of it , to reduce the performance influence of Web services and to solve both the requester and provider side cannot recognize the security token, in this paper, we aim at proposing a SOAP information registration and security token proxy model for Web services (SIRSTPM). We has carried on the formalizing and verifying of this model. The result of theoretical verification shows this model is secure and effective. This model is helpful for solving the problem between security and performance contradiction as well as the token cannot be recognized by both the requester and the provider.

Convergence of the emerging IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) includes unlicensed, nondedicated and nondeterministic, hence uncontrollable, computer access networks for IP multimedia services. It enables provision of resource demanding real-time services and multimedia communication raising new end-to-end Quality-of-Service (QoS) challenges, for which quality adaptation using resource management is proposed as a solution in this paper. This is an integrated solution taking both IMS and computer access networks into account as well as the two end-devices and the application servers (AS) involved in communication. The best user experience is targeted under real-time variation of available network (e.g. bandwidth, buffer space) and end-device (e.g. battery, CPU, memory, storage) resources throughout a session. The multimedia content is dynamically adapted to fit the resource availability variations, achieving maximum system (i.e. network and end-devices) resource utilization and enhanced QoS. The resource availability update signalling is carried over Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) during the session. This is work in progress. © 2007 IEEE.

Despite the availability of video-on-demand (VoD) services in a number of cities around the world, the large-scale deployment of VoD services has not been widely explored due to economic constraints. The high complexity founded in these systems makes the design process very difficult. This study presents a VoD system design for a high-speed metropolitan network, based on ATM technology, located in Brazil. To accomplish this goal, we have utilized our own simulation-based tool for VoD design called VODSim. This tool allows VoD research on any VoD platform, simulating the complete flow path followed by requests from clients to servers passing through the network infrastructure, allowing the configuration and tuning of multiple system parameters. Using VODSim, we analyse possible VoD architectures for the proposal environment (i.e. Centralized-server, Independent-servers, One-level-proxies and Distributed-servers), studying key-parameters that have influence in system design. Experimental results show that Distributed-server architecture is the one that adjusts better to the analyzed infrastructure, improving streaming capacity by 16%, 25% and 28% more than One-level-proxies, Centralized and Independent-servers respectively. Taking in account future growth in VoD system, the Distributed-server even provides an unlimited scalability through new local network incorporation and using P2P techniques. © 2006 IEEE.

Breakthrough-quality scientific discoveries in the new millennium (such as those expected in computation biology and others), along with optimal engineering designs, have created a demand for High-End Computing (HEC) systems with sustained performance requirements at a petaflop scale and beyond. Despite the very pessimistic (if not negative) views on parallel computing systems that have prevailed in 1990s, there seems to be no other viable alternatives for such HEC systems. In this talk, we present a fresh look at the problems facing the design of petascale parallel computing systems. We review several fundamental issues that such HEC parallel computing systems must resolve. These issues include: execution models that support dynamic and adaptive multithreading, fine-grain synchronization, and global name-space and memory consistency. Related issues in parallel programming, dynamic compilation models, and system software design will also be discussed. Present solutions and future direction will be discussed based on (1) application demand (e.g. computation biology and others), (2) the recent trend as demonstrated by the HTMT, HPCS, and the Blue-Gene Cyclops (e.g. Cyclops-64) architectures, and (3) a historical perspective on influential models such as dataflow, along with concepts learned from these models.
