Industrial image datasets for quality inspection are mostly sparse in defects. It is then hard for both automated optical inspection (AOI) machines and simple neural network classifiers to inspect all defects effectively. In this work, we develop a novel framework for industrial anomaly detection in one-class classification manner, which utilized pre-trained generative adversarial networks (GANs) as the rule of thumb to perform anomaly detection. Our results show that GANs are able to capture arbitrary and structural industrial images and can effectively discern defects when the query images are defective.

It is attractive to extract and determine the key features of traffic patterns for mitigating road congestion and predicting travel time of vehicles in traffic analysis. Based on previous works that is a scalable approach via Hadoop MapReduce programming model, and can extract maximal repeats from a huge amount of tagged sequences, this paper adapts that approach to extract significant patterns of travel time intervals of freeway traffics in Taiwan, consisting of gantry list with time intervals of vehicles passing those gantries. Experimental resource are the records of gantry timestamp sequences of each vehicle passed in three months (2016/11-12 and 2017/1), downloaded from the Traffic Data Collection System (TDCS, http://***/history/TDCS/), one of Taiwan government open data platform. To focus on one gantry sequences for observation, in this study, the longest pattern on the trip within the Taiwan National Freeway No.5 is selected. Experimental results show that the statistics of vehicle travel time according to 24 hours/per day are provided, and can give clue to the drivers how to avoid rush hours. This work is expected to be capable to handle a huge amount of real data by extending the scale of time intervals from month to year, and to be promising for further traffic and transportation research in the future. © 2017 IEEE.

Laboratory experimentation plays an essential role in control education. To reduce the high costs of maintaining apparatus in traditional labs and to support distance and blended learning, online laboratories are used as a possible alternative to conventional hands-on labs. In these labs it is often desirable to allow students to define their own experiments. This paper presents the definition and implementation of a generic experimentation language for conducting automatic experiments on existing online laboratories. The main objective is to use an online lab, created independently, as a component in which users can perform experiments. To achieve it, authors present the Experiment Application. It is composed by Blockly, to define and design the experiments, and Google Chart, review and visualize the experiment results. This tool offers benefits to students, teachers and, even, lab designers. For the moment, it can be used with any existing lab or simulation created with the authoring tool Easy Java(script) Simulations. Since there are repositories with hundreds of free available labs created with this tool, the potential applicability of the described tool is considerable. To illustrate the utility of the Experiment Application a very well-known system is used: the Simple Harmonic Oscillator system. © 2017

Inverters are a bridge for DC resources that want to supply AC loads. They can be connected to different resources such as batteries or solar panel on their DC side, and through their AC terminal, get connected to different type of AC loads and supply them. Due to high flexibility in the layout design of multilevel inverters, these inverters are used widely in various applications. One of the most common applications of multi-level inverters is in microgrids, where DC resources with different characteristics and most probably, unstable voltage exists. In general voltage output of inverters, are problematic and might be not close to an ideal sinusoid. Using different types of resources for connecting them to DC side of inverters, cause different harmonics that their amplitude and THD changes in the different situation. Considering real-world DC resources, where their voltage might change suddenly or over time, the problem of controlling harmonics and THD dynamically is more significant. In this paper for overcoming these harmonics under instability, a new comprehensive algorithm has been introduced by using closed-loop PI controller in multi-carrier power width modulation switching that can control the selected harmonics, or lower the produced THD, in both steady DC voltage and unstable situations such as voltage unbalancing of DC resources.

In this paper, we present a robust system of self- directed autonomous robots evolving in a complex and public spaces and interacting with people. This system integrates highlevel skills of environment modeling using knowledge-based modeling and reasoning and scene understanding with robust image and video analysis, distributed autonomous decision- making using Markov decision process and Petri-Net planning, short-term interacting with humans and robust and safe navigation in overcrowding spaces. This system has been deployed in a variety of public environments such as a shopping mall, a center of congress and in a lab to assist people and visitors. The results are very satisfying showing the effectiveness of the system and going beyond just a simple proof of concepts. © 2017 IEEE.

Unintended lane departure accidents are due to driver's inattention, incapacitation, and drowsiness. Lane departure warning systems have been developed to enhance traffic safety by predicting/detecting driving situation and alerting drivers to avoid or mitigate traffic accidents. This paper explores effectiveness of a three-layer perceptron neural network in predicting an unintentional lane departure, which to the best of our knowledge has not been reported in the literature. This study used driver experiment data generated by VIRTTEX, a hydraulically powered 6-degrees-of-freedom moving base driving simulator at Ford Motor Company. The experimental data represented 16 drowsy drivers who drove a simulated 2000 Volvo S80 (three hours per driver), which consisted of a total of 3,508 lane departure occurrences. Two-third of the lane departures were randomly selected to generate training examples for the network (82,040 examples for a 0.2-second prediction horizon and 171,112 for a 0.5-second horizon). The number of hidden neurons as well as the input vehicle variables were optimized experimentally through the training process. The optimized network was then used to predict lane departure by processing the entire driving time series of the 16 drivers one by one after all the training data was removed from the time series. The network made a prediction at each sampling moment of the time series and there were over 6.3 million predictions. The overall recall and precision of the optimized network for the 0.2-second horizon were 99.74% and 99.66%, respectively, which degraded to 99.23% and 85.49%, respectively, when the horizon increased to 0.5 s. © 2017 IEEE.

Image quality assessment (IQA) of an image is a vital research direction in the field of image processing. With the quickly developing evaluation methods, study of image quality evaluation method has a profound impact on image and video processing. At present, most of the image quality assessment methods are based on full reference. The traditional quality evaluation method based on structural similarity has the characteristics of narrow application range, unstable evaluation algorithm and so on. The difficulties of obtaining the original image and the difficulty of the reference model design directly incented the development of the semi reference IQA. In this context, a topic-based image quality evaluation process grounded on local information and structure information is proposed. Compared to the traditional image quality evaluation algorithm, the structure similarity has been improved by combining local information. The results show that the evaluation results of the method are more reasonable and stable, which provides a good reference for the post processing of the image. © 2017 Association for Computing Machinery.

We present results arising from the problem of sweeping a mosquito-infested area with an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) equipped with an electrified metal grid. This is related to the Traveling Salesman Problem, the Lawn Mower Problem and, most closely, Milling with Turn Cost. Planning a good trajectory can be reduced to considering penalty and budget variants of covering a grid graph with minimum turn cost. On the theoretical side, we show the solution of a problem from The Open Problems Project that had been open for more than 15 years, and hint at approximation algorithms. On the practical side, we describe an exact method based on Integer Programming that is able to compute provably optimal instances with over 500 pixels.
