Quantum key distribution is a way to distribute secret keys to distant users with information theoretic security and key rates suitable for real-world applications. Its rate-distance figure, however, is limited by the natural loss of the communication channel and can never surpass a theoretical limit known as point-to-point secret key capacity. Recently, a new type of quantum key distribution with an intermediate relay was proposed to overcome this limit (M. Lucamarini, Z. L. Yuan, J. F. Dynes and A. J. Shields, Nature, 2018). However, a standard application of the decoy state method limited the security analysis of this scheme to hold under restrictive assumptions for the eavesdropper. Hence, overcoming the point-to-point secret key capacity with an information-theoretic secure scheme is still an open question. Here, we propose a novel way to use decoy states to answer this question. The key idea is to switch between a Test mode and a Code mode, the former enabling the decoy state parameter estimation and the latter generating a key through a phase encoding protocol. This way, we confirm the scaling properties of the original scheme and overcome the secret key capacity at long distances. For patient well-being and also for cost efficiency, constantly improving the medical act is essential. All patients undergo a set of medical tests before going into surgery. In some cases, these tests have to be repeated in different hospitals due to the lack of a system that facilitates presenting and sharing patient's data. We present two e-Health solutions for hospitals and clinics in the medical data field. Our aim was to design and implement a unique system for medical data management. This system allows easy data transfer between medical facilities. It also improves the medical diagnostic and treatment process and it increases the quality of medical care. Also, it improves the communication between patients and physicians, decreases the duration and costs of hospitalization and improves the patient's quality of life. The second medical solution presented in this paper present the results of the medical tests directly to a screen in the operating room, further reducing the time a patient has to wait before going into surgery and also improving the medical act. Both medical solutions were tested in real-world scenarios with promising results.

Nowadays, hypersonic flight vehicles are widely studied. Since their high nonlinearity, strong coupling and uncertain factors, the conventional three-channel independent control design method is often unable to work well. In this paper, an active disturbance rejection controller (ADRC) is utilized to cancel internal uncertainties and exogenous disturbances for longitudinal dynamics. Then, the MIMO robust controller is obtained by choosing proper sensitivity functions and weighting functions to reduce horizontal-lateral direction coupling. The conventional H robust controllor is high-order, which is difficult for practitioners to implement. With frequency transformation, both ADRC for the longitudinal dynamics and MIMO robust controller for the horizontal-lateral dynamics are reformed into the static output feedback structure to reduce the high order of controller. Finally, all parameters in the controllers can be optimized by HIFOO (H-Infinity Fixed Order Optimization). The Winged-Cone, a 6-freedom NASA hypersonic vehicle model, is used as a benchmark, and Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2017, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. Preserving data-privacy with added noises: Optimal estimation and privacy analysis

Networked systems often relies on distributed algorithms to achieve a global computation goal with iterative local information exchanges between neighbor nodes. To preserve data privacy, a node may add a random noise to its original data for information exchange at each iteration. Nevertheless, a neighbor node can estimate other’s original data based on the information it received. The estimation accuracy and data privacy can be measured in terms of (ϵ, δ)-data-privacy, defined as the probability of ϵ-accurate estimation (the difference of an estimation and the original data is within ϵ) is no larger than δ (the disclosure probability). How to optimize the estimation and analyze data privacy is a critical and open issue. In this paper, a theoretical framework is developed to investigate how to optimize the estimation of neighbor’s original data using the local information received, named optimal distributed estimation. Then, we study the disclosure probability under the optimal estimation for data privacy analysis. We further apply the developed framework to analyze the data privacy of the privacy-preserving average consensus algorithm and identify the optimal noises for the algorithm. Structure extraction is important for human perception. However, for various textured images, computers can hardly achieve this goal. Despite a plethora of studies to address the challenge, results from most previous methods contain unwanted artifacts and over-smoothed structures. Therefore, to address the weaknesses, we have proposed a variational model with end-to-end contour learning capability. Our formulation dwells in two observations: likelihood for representation of residual textures may be well abstracted using super Gaussian distribution, and edge metrics with semantic meaning may benefit structure preservation. The augmented Lagrangian method is adopted for optimal computation. Compared with classical approaches, our method offers a higher performance in structure extraction, including situations where the images have significant non-uniformity of the scale features.

Low power wireless communication is essential for the realization of IoT devices connected because radio transceivers are one of the biggest sources of power drains. The low power Wake-up Receiver (WUR) is a promising technology that can facilitate this by enabling an on-demand and asynchronous wake-up signal. Although the concept of WUR is not new, only recently it has attracted significant attention from industries due to the development of IoT and energy efficiency that has become a design concern in high performance devices. On the other side, there is a strong effort on the minimization of energy consumption and dissipation associated to the analog and digital circuitry. Therefore, the strategy of AC-clocked power supply follows this tendency. In this work, CPAL JK flip-flops are evaluated regarding time violation, either for frequency shifting or phase shifting, considering the evaluate/hold state of the four-phase power-clock.

Asynchronous parallel algorithms for nonconvex big-data optimization part II: Complexity and numerical results

We present complexity and numerical results for a new asynchronous parallel algorithmic method for the minimization of the sum of a smooth nonconvex function and a convex nonsmooth regularizer, subject to both convex and nonconvex constraints. The proposed method hinges on successive convex approximation techniques and a novel probabilistic model that captures key elements of modern computational architectures and asynchronous implementations in a more faithful way than state-of-the-art models. In the companion paper [3] we provided a detailed description on the probabilistic model and gave convergence results for a diminishing stepsize version of our method. Here, we provide theoretical complexity results for a fixed stepsize version of the method and report extensive numerical comparisons on both convex and nonconvex problems demonstrating the efficiency of our approach. The main objective of the work is to improve the clustering efficiency and performance when we deal with very big datasets. This paper aims to improve the quality of XML data clustering by exploiting more features extracted from source schemas. In particular, it proposes clustering approach that gathers both content and structure of XML documents to determine similarity between them. The content and structure information are concluded using two different similarity methods that are then grouped via weight factor to compute the overall document similarity. The structural similarity of XML data are derived from edge summaries while content features similarity are derived from aggregate of set of similarity measures;Jaccard, Cosine measure and Jensen-Shannon divergence in one algorithm. However, we also experimented using Jaccard distance as content measure with edge summaries to prove that using an aggregation of content similarity measures can further improve the results. The experiments prove that clustering of XML documents based on structure only information produce worse solution in homogenous environment, while in heterogeneous environment clustering of XML document produce better result when the structure and the content are combined. Results have shown that performance and quality of the proposed approach is better in comparison of both XEdge and XCLSC approaches. © 2016 IEEE.

Systems and control are all around us. System view, understanding systems and how they are controlled is important for everyone. The behavior of systems is determined by some fundamental principles which can be understood by everyone. The main principles governing systems and control are presented on different levels. The first level is dedicated for everyone. Comics-like interpretation is provided with explanations. The second level discusses the main topics dedicated for the interested students. Several case studies demonstrate how system view is considered in different areas of life. With this approach systems in different areas of life could be better understood contributing to better decisions influencing their performance. The third level provides deeper insight into some aspects of modern mathematical system theory, to geometric view of control systems. The material is available on a website on the internet. © 2016

This paper considers cluster detection in Block Markov Chains (BMCs). These Markov chains are characterized by a block structure in their transition matrix. More precisely, the n possible states are divided into a finite number of K groups or clusters, such that states in the same cluster exhibit the same transition rates to other states. One observes a trajectory of the Markov chain, and the objective is to recover, from this observation only, the (initially unknown) clusters. In this paper we devise a clustering procedure that accurately, efficiently, and provably detects the clusters. We first derive a fundamental information-theoretical lower bound on the detection error rate satisfied under any clustering algorithm. This bound identifies the parameters of the BMC, and trajectory lengths, for which it is possible to accurately detect the clusters. We next develop two clustering algorithms that can together accurately recover the cluster structure from the shortest possible trajectories, whenever the parameters allow detection. These algorithms thus reach the fundamental detectability limit, and are optimal in that sense. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.
