In this paper, an adaptive control approach is proposed for performance of constrained robot end-effector movements in presence of uncertainty. In real-world scenarios, complex physical phenomena occuring at the place of interaction may introduce nonlinearities in the system dynamics, which have to be taken into account for proper system control. We currently propose an Extremum Seeking (ES) Model Reference Adaptive control (MRAC) approach for state tracking of multiple-input multiple-output systems which enclose nonlinearities in their dynamics and involve parametric uncertainty by employing Adaptive Dynamic Inversion (ADI). According to ADI, system nonlinearities are assumed known and are taken into account in the design of the system control law. The proposed scheme is based on MRAC and ADI while the unknown controller parameters are adapted by ES control. The system is shown to achieve global and asymptotic reference state tracking under the proposed control law by performing Lyapunov and averaging analysis. The approach is evaluated in simulation and in an experimental robot task.

In cognitive radio networks, primary users (PUs) can leverage secondary users (SUs) as cooperative relays to increase their transmission rates, and SUs will in turn obtain more spectrum access opportunities. While most existing works assume that SUs are passively selected by PUs regardless of SUs' willingness, in this paper, we propose a cooperative strategy for SUs to actively decide whether to cooperate or not. Basically, due to PUs' time-varying traffic demands, it is essential for SUs to firstly observe the channels and then select a specific PU to cooperate with in order to save the energy. In our paper, this decision related problem is formulated based on optimal stopping theory where SUs observe PUs in time sequence and then make decisions whether to stop observation and cooperate right away or wait till next time slot to repeat the same process. We address this problem by using backward induction and derive the energy-efficient strategy for SUs. To validate the feasibility of our proposed scheme, extensive simulations are conducted to show the impact of PUs' traffic demands on SUs' decisions. The results also reveal that the proposed optimal rule outperforms the greedy selection strategy and is thus more energy-efficient to be applied to the cooperative cognitive radio networks.

This paper presents an easily implementable load control strategy aimed at managing shiftable loads in residential buildings, possibly equipped also with centralized storage and generation facilities. The algorithm is compliant with the KNX standard for communication of smart home devices, and ensures the controlled reduction of power peak profiles. Simulation results are discussed in details, comparing the achieved performances with the ones attainable by more complicated benchmark algorithms present in literature, and also giving a first assessment of the return on the investments needed to implement the proposed load control architecture.

The extraction of semantic contexts is a relevant issue in information retrieval to provide high quality query results. This paper introduces the semantic context underlying a set of given input concepts as defined by the relevant multiple explanation paths connecting the input concepts in a collaborative network. A pheromone-like model based on this approach is introduced for the detection and the extraction of multiple paths of explanation between seed concepts. The exploration of the online collaborative network of explanation uses a heuristic driven random walk, based on semantic proximity measures. Random walks distribute pheromone on the traversed arcs used to evaluate the relevance of concepts in the multiple explanatory paths to be extracted. Experimental results obtained on accepted datasets and contexts extracted from the Wikipedia collaborative network show that the proposed algorithm can extract contexts with high relevance degree, which outperforms other methods. The approach has a general applicability and can be extended to other explanation-based online collaborative networks.

Wireless in shop-floors is a bet: it outlines the possibility of making automation more flexible and to simplify plant reconfiguration. However, the specific context subtends several challenging requirements, which the available off-The-shelf solutions are not 100%-ready to cope with. By the way, the potential benefits of wireless for automation are so significant that it is worth investigating novel techniques to enforce the available wireless transceivers, so as to make them suitable for factories. The Italian regional project Wi-Fact is putting under close scrutiny the context of wireless automation to identify the most significant threats and proposing solutions to stem them. This paper take stock of the project achievements at its mid-Term turning point. © 2015 IEEE.

The service-oriented environment offers the opportunity to create new applications, by combining existing applications offered as services, in order to react to the business' increasing pressure of quickly delivering new applications. With a large number of web services offering the same functionality, choosing the web services that meet best the client's quality of service (QoS) requirements is a very important task. We introduce a QoS-aware end to end web service composition approach that handles all the stages from the web service discovery step, to the actual binding of the services. This approach uses our method of expressing nonfunctional preferences, which requires minimal effort on the part of the clients, but offers great flexibility in managing trade-offs. We define a QoS preferences ontology and use it in our semantic web service selection to choose an initial candidate list of services for every task in the orchestration model. Then, one concrete service is chosen from each candidate list and is boand to the corresponding task. This step involves computing and comparing the aggregated QoS of the resulting composite services. The selection is performed using a genetic algorithm.

The primary objective is to investigate the applicability of spectral methods for designing feedback controllers for a closed loop system with an input shaper with time delays. The shaper is included in the feedback loop in order to pre-compensate low-damped oscillatory modes of a flexible subsystem. However, after inserting a shaper into the feedback loop, the closed loop dynamics becomes infinite dimensional. A robust controller design then requires guaranteeing that all the infinitely many poles of the closed loop system will safely be located in the left half of the complex plane. Besides, the closed loop dynamics need to be sufficiently fast in order to take over and keep filtering properties of the input shaper. For the spectral design of the controller, the recently developed spectral abscissa minimization approach for interconnected time delay systems is applied. The presented methods are tested on a case study simulation example, which is a multi-degree of freedom mechanical system. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. Automated HEp-2 mitotic cell recognition in IIF images is an important and yet scarcely explored step in the computer-aided diagnosis of autoimmune disorders. Such step is necessary to assess the goodness of the HEp-2 samples and helps the early diagnosis of the most difficult or ambiguous cases. In this work, we propose a completely unsupervised approach for HEp-2 mitotic cell recognition that overcomes the problem of mitotic/non-mitotic class imbalance due to the limited number of mitotic cells. Our technique automatically selects a limited set of candidate cells from the HEp-2 slide and then applies a clustering algorithm to identify the mitotic ones based on their texture. Finally, a second stage of clustering discriminates between positive and negative mitoses. Experiments on public IIF images demonstrate the performance of our technique compared to previous approaches.

The focus in this paper is on active fault diagnosis (AFD) in closed-loop sampleddata systems. Applying the same AFD architecture as for continuous-time systems does not directly result in the same set of closed-loop matrix transfer functions. For continuous-time systems, the LFT (linear fractional transformation) structure in the connection between the parametric faults and the matrix transfer function (also known as the fault signature matrix) applied for AFD is not directly preserved for sampled-data system. As a consequence of this, the AFD methods cannot directly be applied for sampled-data systems. Two methods are considered in this paper to handle the fault signature matrix for sampled-data systems such that standard AFD methods can be applied. The first method is based on a discretization of the system such that the LFT structure is preserved resulting in the same LFT structure in the fault signature matrix as obtained for continuous-time systems. While the benefits of exploiting Contextual Information (CI) are starting being recognized by the Information Fusion (IF) community [1], most current approaches for CI inclusion lead to stove-piped solutions that hardly scale or adapt to new input or situations. This paper makes a step in the direction of better CI exploitation by presenting some results of an international collaboration investigating the role of CI in IF and proposing an adaptive framework that dynamically takes into consideration CI to better support mission goals. In particular, we discuss some architecture concepts to be considered in the development of fusion systems including CI and we present how context can be dynamically exploited at different levels of a fusion engine. The concepts are illustrated in a maritime use-case.
