Over the last decades, atomic force microscopy (AFM) became one of the most important measuring instruments in various disciplines covering life science, biology, material science, semiconductor industries, and micro- and nanotechnology. Conventional AFM scanning techniques are limited to a 2.5D image acquisition, resulting a simple 2D high-map of the surface. Due to the ongoing miniaturization in semiconductor and nanomanufacturing industries, measurements on the critical dimensions are of growing importance. Additionally, novel measurement tasks as the determination of linewidths or even sidewall roughness arise as need from nanometrology. Especially, the upcoming technology of nanooptics and photonics relies critically on powerful and ultra-precise characterization tools for complex surfaces on the sub-nanoscale. In order to produce suitable optical waveguides and building-blocks, all surface roughness and surface impurities have to be minimized, since the result in severe light diffusion and diffraction. Conventional AFM probes are suitable for 2.5D image acquisitions only and don't allow a correct scanning of complex structures. The pyramidal tip of standard probes cannot scan high aspect ratio structures, which leads to a distorted AFM image and to incorrect trench width and height. Furthermore, a standard tip is not able to contact surfaces with tilt-angles larger than the pyramid's side-angle. In general, this makes sidewall scans impossible at all. To overcome these problems, a novel method for performing sidewall measurements is proposed, based on standard AFM equipment in combination with customized FIB-milled AFM tips. Standard AFM environment is improved with an additional control loop incorporating the torsion of the cantilever as feedback to control the lateral position of the AFM tip. © 2014 IEEE.

In this study, we investigated the possibility to evaluate the impact of different avionic technologies on the mental workload of helicopter's pilots by measuring their brain activity with the EEG during a series of simulated missions carried out at AgustaWestland facilities in Yeovil (UK). The tested avionic technologies were: i) Head-Up Display (HUD);ii) Head-Mounted Display (HMD);iii) Full Conformal symbology (FC);iv) Flight Guidance (FG) symbology;v) Synthetic Vision System (SVS);and vi) Radar Obstacles (RO) detection system. It has been already demonstrated that in cognitive tasks, when the cerebral workload increases the EEG power spectral density (PSD) in theta band over frontal areas increases, and the EEG PSD in alpha band decreases over parietal areas. A mental workload index (MWL) has been here defined as the ratio between the frontal theta and parietal alpha EEG PSD values. Such index has been used for testing and comparing the different avionic technologies. Results suggested that the HUD provided a significant (p<.05) workload reduction across all the flight scenarios with respect to the other technologies. In addition, the simultaneous use of FC and FG technologies (FC+FG) produced a significant decrement of the workload (p<.01) with respect to the use of only the FC. Moreover, the use of the SVS technology provided on Head Down Display (HDD) with the simultaneous use of FC+FG and the RO seemed to produce a lower cerebral workload when compared with the use of only the FC. Interestingly, the workload estimation by means of subjective measures, provided by pilots through a NASA-TLX questionnaire, did not provide any significant differences among the different flight scenarios. These results suggested that the proposed MWL cognitive neurometrics could be used as a reliable measure of the user's mental workload, being a valid indicator for the comparison and the test of different avionic technologies.

In this study the P300 latency jitter has been explored in an EEG data set collected from a group of patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC;n=13) that was administered with an auditory Oddball paradigm under passive and active conditions. A method based on wavelet transform was applied to estimate single trial P300 waveforms. Preliminary results showed that 5 Vegetative State (VS) and 8 Minimally Conscious Staten (MCS) patients exhibited significantly higher values of P300 latency jitter as compared to those obtained from a control group of 12 healthy subjects. In addition, the magnitude of the P300 latency jitter negatively correlated with patients' clinical status. The existence of such phenomenon might substantially limit an effective use of Brain computer Interface systems for communication.

This paper presents a vision-based fingertip writing digits detection and recognition system using a CMOS camera and FPGA implementation. It is a real-time signature detector, since the image process algorithms are all executed in Verilog code. The experimental results show that the system can successfully recognize fingertip-numeral-writing with a accuracy rate of 95.8%.

In this paper, the real-time attitude determination based Matlab using low-cost receivers was designed and evaluated. The GNSS attitude determination system was implemented to operation in real-time by TimerCailback in MATLAB. The TTM(Transniission Time Misalignment) of U-blox receiver was confirmed through zero baseline tests and this problem was revised, The computed attitude by the high-cost NovAtel receiver was compared to the computed attitude by the low-cost U-blox receiver. As a result of this, the performance of attitude determination systems by low-cost receiver was confirmed. To determine baseline, LAMBDA and BC-LAMBDA for integer ambiguities search methods were used. To confirm suitable integer ambiguity search method in real-time attitude determination algorithm, determined baselines by two methods were compared, and it was confirmed that BC-LAMBDA is more suitable. As a result of this, the operation of real-time attitude determination system was confirmed using 3 low-cost receivers.

Wireless in shop-floors is a bet: it outlines the possibility of making automation more flexible and to simplify plant reconfiguration. However, the specific context subtends several challenging requirements, which the available off-the-shelf solutions are not 100%-ready to cope with. By the way, the potential benefits of wireless for automation are so significant that it is worth investigating novel techniques to enforce the available wireless transceivers, so as to make them suitable for factories. The Italian regional project Wi-Fact is putting under close scrutiny the context of wireless automation to identify the most significant threats and proposing solutions to stem them. This paper take stock of the project achievements at its mid-term turning point.

This paper addresses the fundamental problem of improving the Luenberger Observer (LO)-based feedback control so that it can deal with effectively a wide range of uncertainties, both internal and external. It is shown that the effect of such uncertainties can be estimated and cancelled in real time, all based on the yet untapped source of information: the estimation error in the existing LO. The result is quite significant in that, by augmenting the LO without changing its original structure or parameters, the LO-based design can be improved in terms of robustness and disturbance rejection. In other words, there is hidden information of uncertainties in the LO tracking error and it can be extracted, often with a mere integrator, to great benefits, as shown in both mathematical analysis and simulation studies.

In this paper an open source software for monitoring humanoid soccer robot behaviours is presented. The software is part of an easy to set up system, conceived for registering ground truth data that can be used for evaluating and testing methods such as robot coordination and localization. The hardware architecture of the system is designed for using multiple low-cost visual sensors (four Kinects). The software includes a foreground computation module and a detection unit for both players and ball. A graphical user interface has been developed in order to facilitate the creation of a shared multi-camera plan view, in which the observations of players and ball are re-projected to obtain global positions. The effectiveness of the implemented system has been proven using a laser sensor to measure the exact position of the objects of interest in the field. © 2014 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

We consider an automated, algorithmic controller synthesis framework for perturbed nonlinear control systems to enforce complex specifications, in which an auxiliary transition system, also known as abstraction or symbolic model, is used as a finite substitute of the original control system in the controller design process. We specifically focus on reducing the computational effort to obtain abstractions, which is the most expensive step in the approach. To this end, we derive a functional to estimate the size of the abstraction, specifically, the number of transitions, and prove that after a suitable transformation the functional becomes strongly convex. Thus, the minimization of the estimated size of the abstraction is an unconstrained strongly convex optimization problem, which is straightforward to solve using standard methods. This permits us to use this functional as a heuristic to determine certain grid parameters for the construction of abstractions. We illustrate the benefits of the newly developed heuristic for two numerical examples.

In general, a magnetic plasmon propagation along a chain of connected Single-Split Ring Resonators (SRR) is obtained using metallic cells over a dielectric substrate. This work presents some kind of a "dual" chain, i.e., a dielectric SRR matrix over non-perfect conductors such as semiconductors. For both materials, dielectric SRR cells and substrates, conductive loss is considered. This new configuration at micro and nano scale cells presents -as simulation reveals- a "dielectric" plasmon response in the range of tens of Terahertz.
