The aim of the present study is to investigate the neurophysiological basis of the cognitive functions underlying the execution of joint actions, by means of the recent technique called hyperscanning. Neuroelectrical hyperscanning is based on the simultaneous recording of brain activity from multiple subjects and includes the analysis of the functional relation between the brain activity of all the interacting individuals. We recorded simultaneous high density electroencephalography (hdEEG) from 16 pairs of subjects involved in a computerized joint action paradigm, with controlled levels of cooperation. Results of cortical connectivity analysis returned significant differences, in terms of inter-brain functional causal links, between the condition of cooperative joint action and a condition in which the subjects were told they were interacting with a PC, while actually interacting with another human subject. Such differences, described by selected brain connectivity indices, point toward an integration between the two subjects' brain activity in the cooperative condition, with respect to control conditions.

The paper presents constraint satisfaction problem driven approach to analytical solution of the cyclic scheduling problem in the Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) producing multi-type parts where for material handling are used the Automated Guide Vehicles Systems (AGVS). Finding the conditions guaranteeing the AGVs deadlock-free and collision-free movement policy is the aim of our researches. The AGVs co-sharing the common parts of the transportation route while executing repetitive processes, i.e. being assigned to AGVs passing along machines in a cyclic way, can be modeled in terms of Cyclic Concurrent Process Systems (CCPS). Schedulability analysis for a given CCPS answers the question whether a cyclic schedule exists or not. The paper suggests approach for schedulability analysis of multimodal processes representing real manufacturing employing the declarative modeling. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

In this paper we study state-space realizations of Linear and Time-Invariant (LTI) systems. Motivated by biochemical reaction networks, Gonçalves and Warnick have recently introduced the notion of a Dynamical Structure Functions (DSF), a particular factorization of the system's transfer function matrix that elucidates the interconnection structure in dependencies between manifest variables. We build onto this work by showing an intrinsic connection between a DSF and certain sparse left coprime factorizations. By establishing this link, we provide an interesting systems theoretic interpretation of sparsity patterns of coprime factors. In particular we show how the sparsity of these coprime factors allows for a given LTI system to be implemented as a network of LTI sub-systems. We examine possible applications in distributed control such as the design of a LTI controller that can be implemented over a network with a pre-specified topology. ©2013 IEEE.

The dynamical and uncertain environments of domestic service robots, which includehumans, require rethinking of the benchmarking principles for testing these robots. Since 2006 RoboCup@Home has used statistical procedures to track and steer the progress ofdomestic service robots. This paper explains the procedures and shows outcomes of these international benchmarking efforts. Although aspects such as shopping in a supermarket receive a fair amount of attention in the robotics community, the authors believe that a recently implemented test is the most important outcome of RoboCup@Home, namely the benchmarking of robot cognition. © 2013, Association for the Advancement of artificial intelligence.

Algebraic Synthesis for Online Adaptation of Dependable Discrete control Systems

Common practice in industrial design of discrete controllers as well as in most synthesis procedures advocated for discrete control in academia is to create the control logic and to transfer it into a PLC language before process start-up. Changes in the operational constraints of the controlled process (e.g. of available resources, nominal set-points, occurrences of failures) have to be accounted for by dedicated alternative routines, i.e. dependability is restricted to variations which are envisaged during design. In contrast, the approach proposed in this paper operates online on a model of the uncontrolled process to compute a control strategy that is adapted to the current set of constraints. By using algebraic computations largely resembling techniques for discrete-time continuous-valued controllers, perceived process variations (including newly defined control-goals) are first assessed with respect to the existence of a feasible successful control strategy, before such a dependable and optimal strategy is computed.

Objective assessment of fabric wrinkledness using multifractal methodology is addressed in the paper. As a first experiment with this methodology in this application field, AATCC standard durable press rating replicas, which are used by textile experts worldwide, were photographed and then segmented using common image processing methods. The resulting skeleton images were then analyzed using the multifractal methodology. © 2013 IEEE.

Link duration determines the performance of many vehicular applications, especially for urban vehicular wireless communication networks. However, the theoretical analysis on link properties is always complicated, since parameters that should be considered include the inter-vehicle distance, the vehicle speed, the turning ratios in the intersection, the influence of traffic lights in the intersections, and the signal decay caused by the roadside buildings etc. To reduce the analytical complexity, most of the previous works proposed preliminary analysis on link duration property by considering some parameters. Even though some works considered all parameters, their assumptions on the parameters setting were somewhat ideal. For example, the events of meeting traffic lights for two consecutive vehicles in a communication route path were always assumed independent with each other, which is different from the actual situations. This paper proposes a discrete Markov process-based analytical model on link duration by considering a relatively complete set of parameters, including the influence of the inter-vehicle distance, vehicle speed, turning ratios in the intersection, traffic lights in the intersection, and the non-line-of-sight transmission for the intersection. Especially, the theoretical study on the link duration is based on a more realistic traffic lights scenario description model. Finally, simulations are carried to verify the accuracy of our analytical work.

The 470-862 MHz band has recently incurred two major spectrum reallocations: the introduction of digital broadcasting (DB) and the allocation of the 790-862 MHz sub-band as a co-primary base for mobile services. While some countries have accomplished full digital switchover (DSO) and implemented DB as their platform for TV broadcasting, others are still in the trial phase. Until 2015, this sub-band will be usable for either broadcasting or mobile service;lack of coordination between neighboring countries could thus result in co-channel interference. Using a Monte Carlo method, we evaluated the minimum separation distance (MSD) and carrier frequency separation necessary to achieve compatibility. Digital video broadcasting-terrestrial (DVB-T) systems can be protected from international mobile telecommunications-advanced (IMT-A) systems using a carrier frequency separation of 17 MHz. Although IMT-A systems are not protected from DVB-T in this sharing scenario, coexistence between adjacent channels is ensured without recourse to interference mitigation by use of a carrier frequency of at least 15 MHz. © 2013 SERSC.

This paper deals with the robust regulation of reactive power and rotor angular speed in a wind turbine driven Doubly Fed Induction Generator, which constitutes one of the key functionalities for the implementation of the future Smart Grids. The focus of the work is the application of a recent development in the theory of robust control of nonlinear systems, which combines robust feedback linearization and H_∞ linear control. The derived robust control system is compared to a traditional one making use of classical feedback linearization and PI controllers. Simulations show the effectiveness of the new approach in extending the performances of the classical feedback linearization based regulator from nominal parameters condition to the perturbed one.

In the control Message Aggregation (CMA) problem, control packets are generated over time at the nodes of a tree T and need to be transmitted to the root of T. To optimize the overall cost, these transmissions can be delayed and different packets can be aggregated, that is a single transmission can include all packets from a subtree rooted at the root of T. The cost of this transmission is then equal to the total edge length of this subtree, independently of the number of packets that are sent. A sequence of transmissions that transmits all packets is called a schedule. The objective is to compute a schedule with minimum cost, where the cost of a schedule is the sum of all the transmission costs and delay costs of all packets. The problem is known to be -hard, even for trees of dept. 2. In the online scenario, it is an open problem whether a constant-competitive algorithm exists. We address the special case of the problem when T is a chain network. For the online case, we present a 5-competitive algorithm and give a lower bound of 2 + φ ≈ 3.618, improving the previous bounds of 8 and 2, respectively. Furthermore, for the offline version, we give a polynomial-time algorithm that computes the optimum solution. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.
