We have previously shown that, with the help of peer-assessment and of a finite-domain constraint-based model of the student's decisions, the teacher could have a complete assessment of the answers to open-ended questions, by grading just a subset of the answers (as low as half of the lot) and having the rest of the grading inferred by the supporting system. In this paper we present a probabilistic version of the earlier model, using Bayesian networks instead than constraints. Our aims are both defining the approach and prepare its validation: 1) modeling the peer-assessment activity of a student that evaluates others' answers, 2) using peer-assessment to help the teacher with a faster/shorter assessment process, 3) inferring the student's level of competence and ability to judge, from peer-assessment and from (partial) teacher-assessment, 4) learning the conditional probabilistic tables (CPTs) of the model from student data, and 5) comparing the probability distribution of competences in the class at different course phases. The model is under development and test with real data. We are developing a web-based interface to deliver open-answer and peer-assessment questionnaires and to assist the teacher-assessment. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper describes the model reduction framework for single-input single-output (SISO) discrete-time systems based on the preservation parameters such as Markov properties of the original system by applying a Frequency-Limited Impulse Response Gramian based Balanced Truncation method. This proposed method extends the Frequency-Limited Impulse Response Gramians model reduction method for continuous systems described in the recent paper in [20] to be applicable for discrete time systems. A numerical example is provided to compare the performances between various frequency limited model reduction methods at an arbitrarily selected frequency range within the passband of a digital filter. The stability of the reduced order models are also checked for each scenario.

This paper presents design considerations of indoor and outdoor navigation techniques proposed for unmanned vehicles (UV). In this paper, we mainly investigate the use and the advantages of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for indoor navigation, and Global Positioning System (GPS) for outdoor navigation. The system primarily uses laser range finder (LRF) measurements for indoor navigation, and is based on Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). For outdoor navigation the system uses Inertial Navigation System (INS) measurements. At periodical intervals the system integrates the measurements of an absolute sensor to improve estimations. The absolute sensor is a WSN interface for indoor navigation, and a GPS receiver for outdoor navigation. Simulation studies were conducted using Unified System for Automation and Robot Simulation (USARSim) and Player/Stage. The results of USARSim based simulations prove the advantages of integrating GPS measurements. Player/Stage based simulations show the advantages of integrating Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) measurements obtained from WSN interfaces. In addition to the simulation studies, field tests with a custom-built Corobot autonomous robot platform will be realized to prove the effectiveness of the methods. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper presents a mobile robot aided self deploying wireless sensor network aiming to detect radiation leaks and to measure radiation levels, and explains design considerations to prolong network life. Special attention is given to the factors which are important for the specific requirements of radiation leak detection. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) provide numerous benefits to applications with low duty cycle, such as environmental monitoring, event detection, etc. However, the realization of these potential benefits directly depends on energy efficient and reliable communication and coordination capabilities of the deployed system. In this study, challenges of WSNs, deployment strategies using mobile robots, and energy harvesting techniques to maximize lifetime of WSNs are discussed. Also, a comparison of two different exploration strategies is shown with the results of our own application developed in C#. Main contributions of this study are discussions on mobile robot aided WSN deployment strategies and energy harvesting techniques to maximize WSN lifetime. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, gradient method is applied to the problem of satellite orbit determination. We used the ground station data (range, azimuth and elevation), for calculating the satellite position vector in the ECI frame. Satellite orbit is in the elliptic shape and satellite turns in orbital plane. Hence, orbit frame (PQW) is defined. Based on representation of input data in the PQW frame, we can define an ellipse. With the characteristics of an ellipse, beside definition of cost function and optimization technique, the satellite orbit is determined. This method, which can be easily implemented in hardware with moderate computational complexity, yield an efficient satellite positioning without assuming a prior knowledge of measurement noise. The performance, accuracy and error of algorithm are checked, by a test case. © 2012 IEEE.

Nowadays, online and real-time pattern classification applications are required in many areas. Most classification algorithms are suitable only for off-line applications. Using the concept of evolving intelligent systems, this paper proposes an evolving fuzzy classifier capable of creating the rule base in online mode and real-time. The proposed evolving fuzzy classifier is based on a new clustering algorithm that consists of an improved version of the Evolving Clustering Method (ECM). Experiments with well-known benchmark classification problems indicated that the proposal is promising. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

This paper presents an overview of our published work on physical principles, applications, and advances in integral imaging and digital holography. Various approaches for image capture, image reconstruction, and 3D display methods are overviewed. Applications including 3D underwater imaging, 3D imaging in photon-starved environments, 3D tracking of occluded objects, 3D optical microscopy, and 3D polarimetric imaging are reviewed.

In this work, a Quasi-Yagi antenna is designed to operate at 2.4 GHz for RFID applications. The proposed device is composed by a Quasi-Yagi antenna surrounded by fractal metamaterial structures placed at strategic positions, improving bandwidth and enhancing the antenna tunability at a desired frequency. Design guidelines for the combination of fractal structures and the Quasi-Yagi antennas are presented. The obtained results show that the use of the proposed antenna in RFID systems is very promising. © 2012 IEEE.

One of the main concerns in underground working tunnels is ensuring the safety of the workers and their equipment. Being aware of the real-time position of personnel in such harsh environment is challenging and requires a sophisticated localization system. With traditional Received Signal Strength (RSS) failing to accurately estimate the distance between nodes due to multipath effect in such long and narrow space, Radio Frequency Time-of-Flight (RF-TOF) is proved to be an alternative method for more accurate distance estimation. To reduce the communication cost, a distributed localization scheme is proposed, where a simple Newton Iteration location estimation algorithm is embedded in the blind node. Linear least square estimation is used as the initial value to accelerate the convergence of the iteration. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. © 2012 IEEE.
