This paper presents a way to improve the computation efficiency of exemplar-based inpainting approach in [4]. Note that the inpainting approach in [4] has computation redundancy in searching optimal patches in source region and updating fill front. A scheme to reduce source region and a modified scheme to update fill front are proposed. With the two schemes, better computation efficiency is expected. Several examples are given to justify the proposed fast inpainting approach and used to compare with the approach in [4]. The results indicate that the proposed approach has better computation efficiency than the approach in [4], as expected. Interesting enough, better visual quality of inpainted images is achieved by the proposed approach as well. © 2012 IEEE.

A novel multichannel multiple access (MMA) protocol is proposed for vehicular ad hoc networks in this paper. For increasing channel efficiency, two control channels are utilized in MMA to finish request-to-send/clear-to-send (RTS/CTS) interactions and acknowledgments (ACKs) separately. When a collision happens in the control channel, the waiting period before the next re-transmission is adjusted by a relative mobility based back-off scheme. Benefiting from the fully distributed channel selection scheme, which is also included in MMA, the data transmissions carried in the chosen service channels can be successfully accomplished without collision, and the influence of exposed terminals can also be effectively alleviated. Simulation results show that MMA outperforms the classic single channel and multichannel MAC protocols in average channel utilization, packet delay, and packet drop rate. © 2012 IEEE.

Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithms with multiple autonomous robots have received considerable attention in recent years. In general, SLAM algorithms use odometry information and measurements from exteroceptive sensors of robots. The accuracy of these measurements and the performance of the corresponding SLAM algorithm directly affect the overall success of the system. This paper presents comparative performance evaluations of three Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithms using Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), Compressed Extended Kalman Filter (CEKF) and Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF). Specifically, it focuses on their SLAM performances and processing time requirements. To show the effect of CPU power on the processing time of SLAM algorithms, two notebooks and a netbook with different specifications have been used. Comparative simulation results show that processing time requirements are consistent with the computational complexities of SLAM algorithms. The results we obtained are consistent with the CPU power tests of independent organizations and show that higher processing power decreases processing time accordingly. The results also show that CEKF is more suitable for outdoor SLAM applications where there are a lot of natural and artificial features. © 2012 IEEE.

This article describes an attempt to create an open source equivalent to the data acquisition and control software LabVIEW. The proposed solution uses GNURadio, OpenCV, Scilab, Xcos and COMEDI on Linux. GNURadio gives a convenient graphical front end. The computations can be carried out using OpenCV or Scilab and Xcos. The device drivers given in COMEDI are used to access real time data. We also present PyGTK based improved graphical user interface for GNURadio. © 2012 IFAC.

This paper presents a novel method for monocular vision based pathway estimation. In this context, the pathway means a trajectory which an autonomous vehicle should follow to avoid departure from the road. The proposed method is based on our previous work on road region segmentation, and exploits the road region extracted from monocular sequential images to estimate parameters of the pathway model. Since the proposed method doesn't require road surface marking, it is suitable for unstructured roads, while it still works for structured roads too. The proposed method is tested on real image sequences and compared with edge based techniques.

Dealing with open-answer questions in a peer-assessment environment

Correction of open answers questions is an heavy task as, in principle, all the students answers have to be graded. In this paper we give evidence of the possibility to reduce the teacher's workload on open questions questionnaires, by a module managing a rough constraint-based model of the students' decisions, involved in a peer-assessment task. By modeling students decisions we relate their competences on the topic (K) to their ability to judge (J) others' work and to the correctness (C) of their own (open) answer. The network of constraints and relations established among the above variables through the students' choices, allows us to constraint the set of possible values of the answers' correctness (C). Our system suggests what subset of the answers the teacher should correct, in order to narrow the set of hypotheses and produce a complete set of grades. The model is quite simple, yet sufficient to show that the number of required corrections is as small as half of the initial answers. In order to show this result, we report on an extensive set of simulated experiments which answer to three research questions: 1) is the method described able to deduce the whole set of grades with few corrections? 2) what set of parameters is best to run actual experiments? 3) is the model "robust" respect to simulations with high probability of random data? © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper, we propose an efficient and accurate traffic management scheme by using multi-channel sniffer and analyzer tool for wireless networks. It is very important to manage data traffic in wireless network. Our methods include a channel resource optimization scheme by using centralized channel assignment algorithms and an intrusion detection scheme using traffic prediction algorithms. For performance evaluation of our mechanism, we use the wireless data measured from a real wireless test networks. Simulation result shows that the scheme could manage the multi-channel status of the networks and present the analysis result to network manager for the network resource configuration. The security manager could detect the intrusion attack to improve the whole performance of the system, and the intrusion detection ratio is acceptable to enhance the security efficiently. © 2012 ACM.

Most software systems are complex and composed of a large number of artifacts. To realize each different artifact specific techniques are used resorting to different abstractions, languages and tools. Successful composition of different elements requires coherence among them. Unfortunately constraints between artifacts written in different languages are usually not formally expressed nor checked by supporting tools; as a consequence they can be a source of problems. In this paper we explore the role of the relations between artifacts written in different languages by means of a case study on the Hadoop open source project. We present the problem introducing its terminology, we quantify the phenomenon and investigate its relation with defect proneness.

This paper concerns the domain of the multimodal transportation systems composed of buses, trains, trams and subways lines and focuses on the scheduling problems encountered in these systems. Transportation Network Infrastructure (TNI) can be modeled as a network of lines providing cyclic routes for particular kinds of stream-like moving transportation means. Lines are connected by common shared change stations. Depending on TNI timetabling the time of the trip of passengers following different itineraries may dramatically differ, e.g. the same distances along the north-south, and east-west directions may require different travel time. So, the mine question regards of TNI schedulability, e.g. the guarantee the same distances in arbitrarily assumed directions will require approximate traveled time. Considered timetabling problem belongs to NP-hard ones. The declarative model of TNI enabling to formulate cyclic scheduling problem in terms of the constraint satisfaction one is our main contribution. At last, the simulated results manifest the promising properties of the proposed model. © 2012 IFAC.
